Verizon Combines Insane Internet Speeds With Sensible Value in New FiOS Bundles

Press release:

Verizon Combines Insane Internet Speeds With Sensible Value in New FiOS Bundles
Introduces New Ultra-High-Performance 'FiOS Quantum' Service, Up to 300 Mbps, to Meet Demand for Maximum Speed and Reliability
News Release ShareThis
NEW YORK – June 18, 2012 –
Verizon residential consumers can now order the company's fastest-ever FiOS Internet service, which features heightened flexibility for consumers to order personalized bundles to match their lifestyles.
The new speeds, available in a range of double- and triple-play bundles, plus stand-alone service, offer significant choices for consumers to meet their rapidly expanding needs for online entertainment, news, information communications and e-commerce.  These needs have generated a rising demand for faster home broadband service.
"A revolution in speed has arrived," said Bob Mudge, president of Verizon's consumer and mass market business unit. "The new FiOS Internet speed and bundle options provide incredible value, and represent the most significant mass scale, consumer broadband speed enhancement in the nation in the past decade."
The new FiOS Internet tiers containing the highest speeds are named FiOS Quantum and feature download/upload speeds of 50/25, 75/35, 150/65 and 300/65 megabits per second (Mbps).  Three of those speeds  75/35, 150/65 and 300/65 -- are twice as fast as those previously offered.¹  In addition, Verizon will continue to offer its entry-level speed of 15/5 Mbps.
The two highest downstream speed offers - 150 and 300 Mbps - and the new 65 Mbps upstream speed are by a wide margin the nation's fastest, mass scale residential Internet speeds available.  By contrast, the fastest Internet speeds offered by cable-company challengers top out at 105 Mbps downstream and 20 Mbps upstream.  (This FiOS Internet speed gridshows specific examples of the benefits of faster downstream and upstream speeds.)
Existing FiOS customers can upgrade to the new bundles and enjoy the faster speeds anytime, with no upgrade fee.²  While the majority of existing FiOS customers will pay $10 to $15 more per month to double or triple their Internet speed, they may be able to adjust their FiOS TV tiers as desired and pay roughly the same monthly total that they pay now.
"Consumers will receive great value from the FiOS Quantum speeds and our customizable bundles," said Mike Ritter, chief marketing officer for Verizon's consumer and mass market business unit. "As consumers stream and watch more movies, sports and shows in their homes on devices other than traditional TVs, such as smartphones, tablets, gaming consoles, smart TVs and Blu-ray players, they need faster broadband to enhance their experience."
Flexible Bundle Options Give Prospective Consumers Greater Choice
For new customers, prices of triple-play bundles of 15/5 Mbps FiOS Internet, FiOS TV and FiOS Digital Voice unlimited calling will range from $99.99 to $144.99 per month, depending upon which FiOS TV package is ordered.  The packages are: Prime, with more than 200 channels and more than 50 HD channels; Extreme, with more than 290 channels and more than 70 HD channels; and Ultimate, with more than 380 channels plus premium movie channels, and more than 110 HD channels).
Double-play bundles of the 15/5 Mbps FiOS Internet and FiOS TV range from $84.99 to $129.99 per month.  Stand-alone 15/5 Mbps service costs $69.99 per month on a month-to-month basis, and $64.99 per month with a two-year contract.
Triple-play bundles of the 50/25 Mbps speed range from $109.99 to $149.99 per month for new customers.  Double-play bundles with FiOS TV range from $94.99 to $134.99 per month.  The stand-alone version costs $79.99 per month on a month-to-month basis, and $74.99 with a two-year contract.
Triple-play bundles of the new 75/35 Mbps speed range from $114.99 to $154.99 per month for new subscribers.  Double-play bundles with FiOS TV range from $99.99 to $139.99 per month.  The stand-alone costs $89.99 per month on a month-to-month basis, and $84.99 with a two-year contract.
Triple-play bundles of 150/65 Mbps speed range from $169.99 to $174.99 per month for new FiOS customers.  Double-play bundles with FiOS TV range from $154.99 to $159.99 per month.  The stand-alone costs $99.99 per month on a month-to-month basis, and $94.99 with a two-year contract.
The new 300/65 Mbps tier, offered as a stand-alone only, costs $209.99 per month on a month-to-month basis, and $204.99 with a two-year contract.¹
The FiOS Quantum speed tiers in particular will help consumers enjoy connecting to desired content anytime and anywhere, said Ritter.  The fastest speeds will also help consumers take advantage of the rise in bandwidth-intensive activities, the increased number of Internet-connected devices being used simultaneously under the same roof and the growing popularity of watching over-the-top video programming.
Consumers interested in FiOS should visit www.verizon.com/fiosquantum or call 1-800-VERIZON (1-800-837-4966).

¹ Speeds not available in all areas.
² Certain restrictions apply.
³ A network upgrade fee may apply for 150 and 300 Mbps service.

Verizon to Acquire Hughes Telematics, Inc.

News release:

Verizon to Acquire Hughes Telematics, Inc.
Verizon to Expand Capabilities in Automotive and Fleet Telematics and Accelerate Growth in Emerging Machine-to-Machine Services
News Release ShareThis
NEW YORK and ATLANTA – June 1, 2012 –
Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE, Nasdaq: VZ) and Hughes Telematics, Inc. (OTCBB: HUTC) today announced a definitive merger agreement under which Verizon will acquire Hughes Telematics, Inc. (HTI) for $12.00 per share in cash, or a total of $612 million.
The transaction will expand Verizon's capabilities in the automotive and fleet telematics marketplace and accelerate growth in key vertical segments, including emerging machine-to-machine (M2M) services applications driven by consumer trends and increasingly connected lifestyles.  HTI is a leader in implementing the next generation of connected services for vehicles, centered on a core platform of safety, security, convenience and infotainment offerings. HTI offers a portfolio of services through its commercial fleet, aftermarket and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) offerings as well products and services for mHealth providers and users.
The Board of Directors of HTI has unanimously approved the transaction upon the recommendation of its special committee, and the transaction was unanimously approved by the directors of Verizon present and voting.  The transaction has also been approved by a written consent executed by holders of a majority of HTI's voting shares.
The transaction is subject to the expiration or early termination of the Hart-Scott-Rodino antitrust waiting period and other customary closing conditions.
The merger is expected to close in the third quarter of 2012, and Verizon plans to retain the existing management team and operate the new unit as a subsidiary within Verizon and operated as part of its Verizon Enterprise Solutions group.  The business will continue to be headquartered in Atlanta.
"We expect M2M and telematics to drive significant growth for Verizon and we're taking an important step forward to accelerate solutions that will unlock more opportunities for existing and new HTI and Verizon customers," said John Stratton, president of Verizon Enterprise Solutions. "Joining Hughes Telematics' robust service-delivery platform and suite of applications with our existing assets will create a premier set of capabilities.  In powerful combination with Verizon's global IP network, cloud, mobility and security solutions, Hughes Telematics' flexible service-delivery platform has the potential to reach beyond the automotive and transportation realm to create new opportunities in mHealth, asset tracking and home automation."
HTI will play a key role in Verizon's strategy to offer platform-based solutions tailored to specific industries.  Verizon earlier this year launched a new practice focused on developing telematics solutions that leverage the company's cloud and information technology (IT), security, global IP network and communications, and mobility and M2M technology platforms.
Jeff Leddy, CEO of HTI, said, "This transaction provides Hughes Telematics' stockholders with a substantial premium over today's market price of our common stock.  We are proud to join a world-class organization like Verizon which will help us continue to build and expand on our industry-leading services. This combination represents an exciting opportunity to accelerate our innovation of new services and global growth and to bring these services to more customers and industries worldwide."
Verizon Enterprise Solutions creates global connections that generate growth, drive business innovation and move society forward. With industry-specific solutions and a full range of global wholesale offerings offered over the company's secure mobility, cloud, strategic networking and advanced communications platforms, Verizon Enterprise Solutions helps open new opportunities around the world for innovation, investment and business transformation. Verizon was represented by UBS Investment Bank and Debevoise & Plimpton LLP.  HTI was represented by Barclays and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP; and the special committee of the Board of Directors of HTI was represented by Moelis & Company LLC and Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP.

Verizon Ushers in New Era of Consumer Broadband; New FiOS Portfolio Features Speeds of 75, 150 and 300 Mbps

News release:

Verizon Ushers in New Era of Consumer Broadband; New FiOS Portfolio Features Speeds of 75, 150 and 300 Mbps
Higher Speeds Cater to Rapid Growth in Video Streaming and Multiple Internet-Connected Devices in Homes
News Release ShareThis
NEW YORK – May 30, 2012 –
Responding to consumer demand for ultra-high-speed home broadband service, Verizon next month will more than double the speeds of several of its FiOS Internet tiers - and introduce two new tiers with even faster speeds.
The new FiOS Internet portfolio will feature download/upload speed tiers of 50/25 and 150/65 megabits per second (Mbps), as well as two new tiers of 75/35 and 300/65 Mbps.  The latter speed is double that of FiOS Internet's current top speed of 150/35 Mbps, the nation's fastest, mass scale residential Internet speed.
In addition, Verizon will continue to offer its entry-level speed of 15/5 Mbps.  The other speeds in the company's current industry-leading FiOS Internet portfolio are 25/25, 35/35 50/20 and 150/35 Mbps.  (A FiOS Internet speed grid with more details about the current and future FiOS speeds is available by clicking here.)  Pricing for the new portfolio will be announced next month.

The new speeds, to be offered in stand-alone and bundled packages, are designed to address the burgeoning growth of bandwidth-intensive applications and the increase in the number of Internet-connected devices being used simultaneously in the same household.  The speeds will also support consumers who are watching more over-the-top video programming on TVs and portable devices, and accommodate the rise in Internet-enabled applications like video and audio streaming, home monitoring devices, video chat, multiplayer gaming and online backup services, all of which  can simultaneously sap the strength of many home broadband connections.
Bob Mudge, president of Verizon's consumer and mass market business unit, characterized the broadband speed increases as a "societal and technological necessity," as secure network applications enable consumers to enjoy a "borderless lifestyle" in which they can connect to the content they care about, anytime and anywhere.
"The ways we used the Internet and watched TV over the past 10 to 15 years have dramatically shifted," said Mudge. "With the emergence of smartphones, smart TVs, Blu-ray players, tablets and gaming consoles that also serve as over-the-top devices, consumers need more bandwidth to receive the highest-quality experience."
The higher downstream and upstream FiOS tiers that Verizon will deliver will provide customers with sustained speed and reliability of service, in contrast to intermittent speed boosts offered by cable-company competitors whose networks, unlike Verizon's, are not all-fiber optic.
How FiOS Internet Speeds Meet Individual Needs of Consumers
Consumers will be able to choose from the new range of FiOS speed options to maximize their broadband or video experience.  For example, the 15/5 Mbps tier is best used for basic tasks such as email and Web browsing in a household of one or two Internet-connected users with several devices.  In contrast, the 50/25 Mbps tier can best serve a multiple-device household with three or more users who frequently telecommute, enjoy downloading music and photos, and viewing videos on PCs or wireless devices.
The new 75/35 Mbps tier best serves a household that streams HD movies to the TV, downloads or uploads video files, participates in multiplayer gaming, and has three or more Internet-connected users on multiple devices.
The most powerful 150/65 and 300/65 Mbps speed tiers are designed for households of five or more Internet-connected users who want to receive the best standard- and high-definition video streaming experience on a variety of devices.
Why Video Web Traffic Is Fueling the Need for Faster Bandwidth
"Our top FiOS speed will be twice as fast as anything America has ever seen," said Mike Ritter, chief marketing officer for Verizon's consumer and mass market business unit. "High-speed Internet no longer is just for techies, as more than half of our residential consumers already use at least a 20 Mbps Internet connection.  Streaming online video on an all-fiber-optic connection providing faster speeds is better and more reliable during peak Internet usage hours.
"As recently as 2005, video was less than 10 percent of Web traffic," said Ritter. "By the end of this year, we expect it to be 50 percent, growing to 90 percent in just a few years."
Today, the average home has seven Internet-connected devices.  With the continuing increase of devices in the home using a wired or Wi-Fi Internet connection, the average home by 2015 will have between nine and 15 Internet-connected devices, said Ritter.
The majority of Verizon customers will be able to order the two fastest-speed options of 150 and 300 Mbps, which require customers to be connected via a GPON (gigabit passive optical network) terminal.  For existing customers who have a BPON (broadband passive optical network) terminal and qualify for the GPON service, the installation of a new GPON terminal will be required.
With a 300 Mbps speed, consumers can download a two-hour, standard-definition movie (1.5 gigabytes) in less than 40 seconds; and a two-hour, high-definition movie (5 GB) in 2.2 minutes.  On a 150 Mbps connection, the same two-hour, SD movie can be downloaded in less than 80 seconds, and the two-hour, HD movie in less than four-and-a-half minutes.
Downloading 20 high-resolution photographs (100 megabytes) would take 2.8 seconds with a 300/65 Mbps connection and 5.4 seconds using the 150/65 Mbps service.  With the 65 Mbps upstream speed, consumers can upload 200 high-resolution photos or five minutes of HD video in 31 seconds, and in 58 seconds with the 35 Mbps upstream service.
More than 13.7 million customers in parts of nine Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states plus parts of Florida, Texas, California and the District of Columbia can order FiOS Internet. The total will grow to 18 million as Verizon continues to deploy its all-fiber-optic network to serve more consumers and small businesses.
