IBM Transforms FlashSystem to Help Drive Down the Cost of Data

IBM Transforms FlashSystem to Help Drive Down the Cost of Data

Data Center Modernization Solutions Deliver Support for Public Cloud, Containers and Machine Learning
ARMONK, N.Y. - 26 Oct 2017: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced sweeping advances in its all-flash storage solutions and software to significantly drive down the costs of data and extend its solutions for hybrid and private cloud environments.
  • New ultra-dense FlashSystem array capable of storing more data in the same footprint, contributes to lower data capacity costs by nearly 60 percent. [1]
  • New Spectrum Virtualize software allows simplified migration and disaster recovery of data to and from the IBM Public Cloud;
  • New software enables IBM and non-IBM storage to be used with popular Docker and Kubernetes containers environments;
  • Cloud-based software beta program integrates storage with artificial intelligence and machine learning through new software to collect inventory and diagnostic information in order to help optimize the performance, capacity and health of clients’ storage infrastructure.
“Companies are seeking guidance in modernizing their data from being a passive cost center to being the central hub for their business. IBM understands that only those that extensively analyze and exploit their data will benefit from it,” said Ed Walsh, GM, IBM Storage and SDI. “To help clients make this transformation, we are introducing new all-flash solutions that will dramatically lower the cost of storage systems while making data availability – whether on-site or in the cloud - a central part of their business strategy.”
In addition to the aforementioned features, updates to IBM Storage systems and software include:
  • New Platform Speeds Private Cloud Deployments – IBM Spectrum Access solutions offer what storage admins users need to deploy a private cloud quickly and efficiently, delivering the economics and simplicity of the cloud with accessibility, virtualization and performance of an on-premises implementation;
  • Consumption-Based Pricing – new utility offering enables a consumption-based buying model for hybrid cloud environments leveraging most of the IBM storage and VersaStack portfolios for users preferring to buy storage as an operating expense;
  • Consolidated User Interface – new interface for FlashSystem 900 consolidates activity and performance information in a single dashboard. Consistent with user interfaces used in other IBM storage systems and IBM Spectrum Storage software, the UI simplifies operations and helps improve productivity;
  • VersaStack with FlashSystem – incorporating the newest FlashSystem being announced today an extensive refresh to the IBM/Cisco VersaStack converged infrastructure offerings;
  • Investment Protection – several of the new all-flash storage and VersaStack solutions announced today are NVMe ready, enabling them to take advantage of the NVMe offerings coming in 2018.
“IT modernization has become a business necessity for us and IBM's newly announced provisioning of 3x more usable capacity in the same physical space presents an exciting opportunity,” said Nader El-Ramly,” Chief Product Officer at ZE PowerGroup. “We believe that maintaining the same characteristic low latency of previous FlashSystem generations without necessitating costly upgrades to rack space, cooling, and power or requiring a sacrifice of quality features like data reduction exemplifies IBM's deep understanding of modern client needs.”
“With this announcement, IBM is demonstrating, among other things, how highly leveraged their FlashCore strategy is,” said Eric Burgener, Research Director for Storage at IDC.  “Next generation FlashCore enhancements, including higher density 3D TLC NAND-based media and hardware-assisted in-line compression and encryption, immediately improve the capabilities of multiple IBM All Flash Arrays by providing features that drive higher infrastructure density and improved security more cost-effectively.”
IBM leadership in storage systems and software is based upon more than 380 system patents, including IBM FlashCore technology and more than 700 patents for IBM Spectrum Storage software. As a result IBM’s flash arrays have been ranked as Leader in Gartner Magic Quadrant for Solid State Arrays for four years in a row and for the 3rd year in a row has been named the#1 Software-Defined Storage vendor by IDC.

Built in collaboration with MetLife, platform will help carriers simplify customer experience and expand benefits in growth markets
ARMONK, N.Y. - 11 Oct 2017: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced it is building an industry-first insurance platform on the IBM Cloud that aims to improve the processes and economics for new product development, underwriting, and benefits delivery.
Built in collaboration with MetLife (NYSE: MET) and Majesco (NYSE MKT: MJCO), the IBM Insurance Platform will feature cognitive computing, data analytics and integration and security capabilities designed to help insurers expand access to their products and capture new customers.
"Our Industry Platforms are designed in collaboration with our clients and partners and intended to dramatically improve traditional business models using deep industry expertise and advanced technologies such as AI, cloud and blockchain," said Bridget van Kralingen, senior vice president, IBM Industry Platforms. "In the case of insurance, carriers will be able to inject greater innovation and speed into their operating models, and consumers will experience a broader range of products tailored to their individual needs.”
IBM works with 95 percent of the world’s top insurers. By combining insights from thoseengagements, and with deep industry expertise contributed by MetLife, the IBM Insurance Platform will help carriers better harness their expansive data sets to improve product mix and customer experience. Delivered as a service, the platform will also help insurers sense and respond to the market faster while reducing IT infrastructure and maintenance costs.
“This new direction provides us with the opportunity to introduce to the market a unique business model unlike any other. The strategy represents innovation in our approach to growth and is a testament to the reality that every company needs to become a technology company in order to survive,” said Marty Lippert, MetLife executive vice president and head of Global Technology & Operations. “It brings together the best of MetLife’s insurance expertise and capabilities with leading IBM technology into a single, highly scalable, low cost insurance industry solution.”
MetLife will pioneer the use of this industry-first, end-to-end digital solution, beginning with its small business customers. MetLife will have the ability to tailor and scale its benefit offerings from quote to claim. Through a new digital experience, customers and brokers will have access to a broader selection of affordable group benefits, including: life, dental, vision, disability, voluntary and other products.
“Small business is an attractive growth segment for MetLife. We know from speaking to many business owners and brokers that they believe employee benefits are important in attracting, retaining and engaging talent. We’re excited this platform will give our customers greater access to the benefits they need through a simpler, affordable experience,” said Michel Khalaf, MetLife’s president of U.S. Business and EMEA.
According to an analysis of A.M. Best Data, the U.S. group benefits market was approximately $140 billion in 2016. Increased customer expectations and new market entrants highlight the need for insurance carriers to bring new offerings to market that attract customers while cost-effectively servicing existing ones.
Majesco, a multinational provider of insurance technology software and an established IBM partner, is contributing to the platform with components to enhance underwriting, policy administration, billing and claims.
As IBM advances the platform, new capabilities will be added including the ability to integrate with blockchain networks to provide trusted, highly secure, permissioned transactions, and the option to incorporate regulatory compliance data and third-party software.
The IBM Insurance Platform represents another important expansion of IBM's Industry Platforms business, formed to deliver comprehensive offerings for specific industries. IBM Announces New Capabilities to Help On-Premises Customers Effectively Manage Compliance Data with Object Storage

Customers Can Now Deploy Entry-level Cloud Object Storage With the Ability to Scale to Larger Configurations
ARMONK, N.Y. - 09 Oct 2017: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced two significant milestones in making the on-premises IBM Cloud Object Storage System much more accessible for customers with new compliance-enabled vaults and concentrated dispersal mode capabilities.
Customers, especially those in regulated industries who are typically large private cloud users, need a better, more efficient way to store their growing compliance data. The financial services, healthcare and government sectors often have strict regulatory obligations that effectively limit them to a smaller number of choices when it comes to cost effectively storing compliance data in their company data centers. Another key barrier to leveraging on-premises object storage is the lack of lower capacity, lower cost options for companies that want to get started with a smaller object storage system and have the flexibility to scale as needed. Currently, a financial services provider that needs object storage capabilities for regulatory compliance data less than 300TB is left with very limited cost-effective options.
IBM is designing capabilities to change the economics for companies that manage compliance data on-premises while also reducing the costs of entry with two new object storage capabilities that help customers:
1. Store and manage regulatory data with compliance-enabled vaults: In order to comply with regulatory retention requirements (like those in SEC 17a-4(f)), companies are required to store some data immutably, preventing it from being deleted or modified for a specified retention period, which could be years in certain cases. IBM is announcing compliance-enabled vaults, a new capability of its on-premises object storage system that allows companies to create data vaults designed to help them protect data from deletion or modification as required for their compliance with regulations like SEC Rule 17a-4(f) and FINRA (Rule 4511). This new capability can help companies that must preserve electronic records in a non-rewritable and non-erasable format.
One of the top five U.S. banks has adopted IBM Cloud Object Storage System’s compliance-enabled vault capability to store their data in a manner that meets relevant SEC 17a-4(f) compliance requirements. The bank has been able to manage its growing archive of data in a regulatory compliant manner while achieving considerable cost savings and operational simplicity.
2. Deploy entry-level Cloud Object Storage Systems with the ability to scale to larger configurations: Companies can now get started with the IBM Cloud Object Storage System at a capacity as small as 72TB, which is designed to require much less hardware infrastructure than IBM’s previous offerings. IBM is introducing a concentrated dispersal mode capability that enables smaller footprint systems that easily scale to larger configurations. This is a huge advantage for companies that are new to object storage, as they can now reduce their initial deployment commitment and retain the benefits of IBM Cloud Object Storage as they grow to petabyte scale and beyond. With the new concentrated dispersal mode capability, IBM can create configurations that are designed to use significantly fewer resources than previous minimal configurations and better align to customer requirements for private cloud storage.
“With the new concentrated dispersal mode capability offered by IBM, we can offer a very attractive cost of entry to replace traditional NAS environments for a wide range of use cases, including data consolidation, departmental shares, home directories, application data storage over Network File System (NFS) and Windows server modernization,” said Rich Weber, Chief Product Officer for Panzura, an IBM Business Partner. "With the combined products from IBM and Panzura enterprise cloud file services, organizations can replace traditional NAS and scale to exabytes of data across multiple locations, all while experiencing top performance and functionality. We also see the value of IBM's new compliance-enabled vaults and are working with IBM to deliver this capability for our joint customers."
“The new on-premises object storage capabilities are designed to expand use cases for IBM Cloud Object Storage to archives requiring protection against data deletion and modification, and to significantly lower the cost of a system with capacity as low as 72TB, for any use case, making initial deployment more attainable without losing the ability to scale up as usage expands,” said Rob McCammon, Offering Leader, IBM Cloud Object Storage.
The new compliance-enabled vaults and concentrated dispersal mode capability is currently planned to be generally available December 1, 2017.

Bank of Montreal, CaixaBank, Commerzbank, Erste Group, IBM and UBS Collaborate to Advance an Open, Blockchain-based Trade Finance Platform

Bank of Montreal, CaixaBank, Commerzbank, Erste Group, IBM and UBS Collaborate to Advance an Open, Blockchain-based Trade Finance Platform

New platform designed to support trade finance transactions
4 October, 2017 - 04 Oct 2017: Bank of Montreal (BMO), CaixaBank, Commerzbank and Erste Group have joined an initiative launched by UBS and IBM (NYSE: IBM) in 2016 to build a new global trade platform based on blockchain technology. This new platform, called Batavia, is built to be openly accessed by organisations of all sizes anywhere in the world, and can support trade finance for transactions across all modes of trade, whether goods are being transported by air, land or sea.
Batavia advances the work initiated by UBS and IBM to develop a trade finance platform built on the IBM Blockchain Platform powered by the Hyperledger Fabric Blockchain framework. The development work is being done collaboratively by the five banks and IBM in consultation with transportation industry experts as well as the banks’ customers to ensure that the platform is flexible and intuitive for customers and can be commercialized. Batavia is targeting pilot transactions with customers on the network in early 2018 to test and refine the platform.
Designed to support more efficient, transparent and cost effective transactions, the new global trade financing platform will help organizations more easily build multi-party, cross-border trading networks worldwide. Batavia will allow transacting parties to view the progress of a shipment as it leaves the warehouse, is loaded onto a plane, truck or boat and arrives at the receiving port, automatically releasing payments incrementally along each step of the process.
The platform will help connect participants in a trading network, delivering the potential to transform global trade. The open nature of the platform, which encourages broad participation by many banks, vendors and regulators, will also help open new trade corridors, bring new players into the market and expedite processes that before were prohibitively time-consuming and expensive.
Traditionally, trading partners, including buyers, sellers, their banks, transporters, inspectors and regulators have relied on large volumes of paper based documentation to securely conduct trade transactions. This process can take up to weeks, incurring costs, making data vulnerable to errors due to repeated manual reprocessing and tying up capital. Delays and lack of transparency in trade can make it difficult for companies to access financing, limiting their ability to trade across borders and grow revenues. The Batavia platform will eliminate the necessity to handle and compare documents, allowing buyers, sellers and their banks to execute transactions with a high degree of efficiency and transparency.
Blockchain enables greater transparency by digitising agreements entered into a permanent, immutable ledger that all involved parties in a trade transaction can view. The status of a contract until its fulfilment is updated automatically through IoT sensor data or user input. Batavia will save users time and reduce costs by ensuring the integrity of data as it changes hands, reducing third-party verification processes and minimising the potential for errors, tampering or disputes. When all participants in a transaction can access a shared version of the truth, they can interact with greater trust, building larger and more distributed networks, and in turn, growing revenue.
Bank of Montreal
“BMO takes great pride in being a leader in trade and supply chain finance innovation. Our objective is to deliver simple and efficient solutions founded on technology that delivers cost, efficiency and risk benefits to our clients and the bank,” said Jeffrey Shell, Managing Director and Head of Global Trade & Banking at BMO. “We are very excited to participate in this initiative and sense the development of real, positive outcomes for our clients in North America and around the world. As a partner in Batavia we are strengthening our ability to remain highly relevant to our clients as the financial services industry continues to evolve.”
CaixaBank
Jordi Fontanals, CaixaBank Chief Operating Officer, said: “At CaixaBank we operate a fully customer-centric innovation model, using technology and creating original products to support individuals and businesses alike. Harnessing blockchain technology offers enormous potential for driving digitization, but more importantly it paves the way for international projects in collaboration with multiple partners, with these being created and designed to serve our customers. Batavia is a prime example of this, allowing us to bolster the foreign trade services that CaixaBank provides to its clients with commercial operations around the world”.
Commerzbank
Bernd Laber, Group Executive Trade Finance & Cash Management, Commerzbank AG said: “Commerzbank processes around 30% of German foreign trade and a significant share of European foreign trade activities. As a strong partner for international trade finance, we assist our clients with premium solutions as well as in mitigating risks. With this collaboration and the envisaged platform, we strive to be at the forefront of exploring modern technology in the digital transformation of international trade finance processes.”
Erste Group
“Erste Group is committed to implementing innovations that provide our clients with greater transparency, efficiency and utility in the pursuit of their business and financial interests. By transforming the processes in international trade financing, the Batavia platform promises to boost foreign trade, thus also strengthening a key prosperity-promoting pillar of the economies in our region, Central and Eastern Europe,” said Patrick Götz, Head of Corporate Flow Products at Vienna-based Erste Group Bank AG.
IBM
“In working with hundreds of clients to implement blockchain solutions, financing global trade has emerged as one of the use cases most in need of innovating,” said Fabio Keller, IBM project lead. “Targeting the creation of large, global, multi-modal networks that bring transparency and trust to each step of the trade process is what makes Batavia a platform with so much potential to transform the way companies around the world do business with one another.”
UBS
"Today, the process of securing and financing trade is highly cumbersome for corporates," said Beat Bannwart, Head Strategic Innovation & Market Development, Corporate & Institutional Clients at UBS. "Through working closely with our clients, we aim to innovate their user experience through a simple, digital and automated way of arranging, securing and financing their international trade transactions by leveraging new technology and creating an open ecosystem."
