Order up: Hardee’s and Microsoft pilot customer self-order kiosks running on Windows

Order up: Hardee’s and Microsoft pilot customer self-order kiosks running on Windows
Posted January 12, 2015 By Microsoft News Center

NEW YORK — Jan. 12, 2015 — At the National Retail Federation’s Annual Convention & EXPO on Monday, Microsoft Corp. and CKE Restaurants Inc. (parent company of Hardee’s® and Carl’s Jr.®) will showcase a self-order kiosk solution running on Windows 8 devices that enables Hardee’s customers to customize and place their own orders. The Dell Optiplex 3030 All-in-One devices are currently deployed as a pilot test in 30 restaurants, including a newly redesigned kiosk-featured restaurant in Nashville, Tennessee. As part of its pilot, Hardee’s will continue to roll out kiosks to additional restaurants in the next few months.

“Hardee’s is changing the way it interacts with its customers, making the ordering process more streamlined, personal and fast,” said Tracy Issel, general manager of Worldwide Retail, Consumer Goods, Hospitality and Travel at Microsoft. “This is just one example of how Microsoft is giving retailers new ways to reinvent the customer experience.”

“Our target market of young, hungry millennials, as well as younger and older customers, love the new ordering kiosks,” said Tom Lindblom, senior vice president and chief technology officer at CKE Restaurants. “The self-ordering kiosk gives the customer a fun, interactive and user-friendly way to control their order. At CKE, we understand that customer expectations are changing quickly, and our relationship with Microsoft allows us to enhance the restaurant experience and better serve our customers’ needs and expectations.”

The kiosks offer these capabilities:

  • Point-of-service (POS) purchasing. Customers can review menu selections, customize and place orders, and pay for purchases. The device can double as an employee POS when needed.
  • Order entry and menu updates. The kiosks relay orders directly to the kitchen, allowing customers to get their food more quickly and accurately. Employees can simply update the kiosk menu to include seasonal offerings or price adjustments, or to add language capabilities to suit the store’s customer base.
  • Reporting and personnel management. Managers can run various sales and shift reports; employees can use the kiosks to clock in and out for shifts and breaks.

The Intel-powered Dell 3030 kiosks with Windows 8 provide a touch-friendly, familiar experience for customers and employees. Restaurants where Hardee’s has deployed the kiosks have seen a dramatic reduction in wait times and an increase in per-ticket totals, all while their customers are creating the perfect burger or biscuit, made just how they like it. For example, guests can add or eliminate ingredients such as holding the mayo on the Mile High Bacon Thickburger® or adding extra bacon to the Bacon, Egg & Cheese Biscuit. According to CKE, one out of every three customers at the Nashville location are using the kiosks, and the kiosks have generated increased sales and more efficient work streams throughout store operations. It also allows the shift workers to focus more time on customer service. See a video of this is action here.

The Hardee’s pilot project is one of several Microsoft retail customer deployments being shown at the NRF Big Show in New York. Microsoft is working with retailers, including GameStop and TGI Friday’s Inc., to showcase seamless and personalized experiences being delivered in real time through the cloud and on smart devices. Additional information about Microsoft’s presence at NRF can be found here. Broadcast media can access b-roll video here.

TGI Fridays partners with Microsoft on tablets to streamline orders, improve customers’ visits
Posted January 12, 2015 By Microsoft News Center

NEW YORK — Jan. 12, 2015 — TGI Fridays Inc., in relationship with Microsoft Corp., is transforming its guests’ experience by equipping servers with 8-inch tablets so they can quickly and accurately process orders and payments while at the table. Using the new Fridays Service Style technology powered by Windows 8.1, servers can carry their tablets from table to table to take orders and respond promptly to guest requests.

tgifGood“We’ve always prided ourselves on giving our guests the best experience possible, particularly in their interactions with our people,” said TGI Fridays Vice President and CIO Tripp Sessions. “Windows 8 gave us a platform that allowed us to develop a new user interface, which gives our servers even better tools to delight our guests and make their experience even more enjoyable.”

“TGI Fridays is rethinking how technology can lead to restaurant innovation,” said Tracy Issel, general manager of Worldwide Retail, Consumer Goods, Hospitality and Travel for Microsoft. “We are helping it change the way food orders are processed and wait staff and managers do their jobs, reinventing the customer experience, one restaurant at a time.”

The devices use Windows 8.1, running Oracle’s MICROS Restaurant Enterprise Solution (RES) 5.4 on the Dell Venue mTablet E-Series mobile point of sale devices. Many restaurant technology solutions rely on proprietary hardware or custom ruggedized devices, built to withstand the abuse of a kitchen environment. Such solutions can be expensive and take a long time to develop and deploy. Oracle’s MICROS RES 5.4 allows TGI Fridays to manage the various aspects of running a restaurant, from tableside ordering to traffic and queue management, all from one solution and in a much more cost-effective way. It also puts the technology in the hands of the Fridays people, preserving the experience they can offer guests, rather than using tabletop technology that would reduce their interactions. The device also improves the table wait time and helps regulate the pace of orders sent to the kitchen.

TGI Fridays has completed a six-city pilot in Texas and Minnesota, and it will deploy the tablets in 80 additional restaurants, with more than 2,000 tablets by March.

Bang & Olufsen Hears the Sound of Savings With Office 365

Press release:

Bang & Olufsen Hears the Sound of Savings With Office 365
Aug. 02, 2012
Luxury audio systems maker expects to save 82 percent in IT operations with Microsoft solution.
REDMOND, Wash. — Aug. 2, 2012 — Luxury audio and video systems maker Bang & Olufsen has adopted Microsoft Office 365 to unify its email, calendaring, collaboration and communication. The company wanted to upgrade its email system from the limitations of Lotus Notes to a less-expensive, easier-to-scale cloud solution: Office 365. The company now has all 2,000 employees using Office 365.
“We investigated whether we should continue relying on internal servers or go with a cloud solution. And we realized that we could save money by going to the cloud with Office 365,” said Ole Damsgaard, senior director of IT & Shared Service Centre at Bang & Olufsen. “It was easy to integrate Office 365 into our existing work environment and for our employees to start using it right away because they already know tools like Outlook and other Microsoft products.”
Founded in 1925 in Struer, Denmark, Bang & Olufsen is world-renowned for its high-end TVs, loudspeakers, MP3 player docks and audio systems that are often built into luxury vehicles, including those made by Audi, BMW, Mercedes-AMG and Aston Martin.
Internal competition for limited IT resources kept pushing an email upgrade to the back burner. However, Damsgaard knew the company needed an up-to-date, top-of-the line email, conferencing and file-sharing solution.
“We’re always in competition with other projects for funding,” Damsgaard said. “We have a limited amount of resources and money. Often, upgrading our software is secondary to meeting other business objectives.”
About 75 percent of Bang & Olufsen’s employees work remotely. However, the email solution they were using, Lotus Notes, was only accessible to the 150 employees who had company-provided smartphones. The other 1,350 mobile workers were left without access.
Recommended by Proactive, Bang & Olufsen’s IT provider, Office 365 was determined to be a cost-effective solution at a time when Bang & Olufsen had to decide between building its own IT environment — complete with on-premises servers — or moving to the cloud.
With Office 365, Bang & Olufsen will reduce travel and IT costs, improve access and ease of use, and enjoy email, calendars and conferencing that work better together:
• Less spending on travel and IT. Compared with an internally hosted solution, Bang & Olufsen is saving 82 percent on IT operations by using Office 365.
• Improved remote accessibility. With Office 365, employees can access email from virtually any smartphone, a remote PC or other mobile devices.
• Familiar, easy-to-use interface. Learning how to use Lotus Notes presented a challenge to most new Bang & Olufsen employees. Today, new staff members are typically already familiar with their Outlook email and require little to no training to use Office 365.
• Seamless integration among services. With Office 365, an employee can quickly check a colleague’s calendar for availability, email an invitation and then click the URL in the invite to start the meeting.
“Our employees are used to using Outlook and other Microsoft products. It was easy to integrate Office 365 into our existing work environment and for our workers to start using it right away because they already know the tools,” Damsgaard said. “And now, everybody who has a smartphone can very easily access their emails and calendars.”

EmployBridge Puts People to Work Across the US With Help From Microsoft Dynamics CRM

Press release:

EmployBridge Puts People to Work Across the US With Help From Microsoft Dynamics CRM
July 30, 2012
Staffing firm streamlines its online applications process to help qualified applicants get back to work faster.
REDMOND, Wash. — July 30, 2012 — EmployBridge, a national leader in staffing and workforce solutions with more than 155 locations throughout the U.S., has chosen Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 to develop and implement an online solution that enables the company to fill “great jobs with great people.” This new solution supports the entire job-seeking process, from the candidate’s initial application to final matching of candidates to jobs.
With the help of Microsoft Gold Certified Partner, Credera, EmployBridge developed what came to be known as the Online Applicant Entry (OAE), a specialty solution using the Dynamics CRM solution that is transparent to end users but supports the entire application process. The new OAE was further integrated with other applications used by EmployBridge for finding the best candidates for clients, including pre-employment screening, skills and personality profile testing. The time savings were tremendous — a process that could take weeks, according to EmployBridge CIO Chris Loope, dwindled to a few days.
“After initially reviewing customer relationship management (CRM) solutions from several providers, we determined that Microsoft Dynamics would be the best solution for our broad range of needs,” Loope said. “Better yet, it leveraged our existing investment in Microsoft technology with our applicant tracking system.”
Previously the process required applicants to visit their nearest branch location in person to fill out an application that consisted of several pages, which could take in excess of 20 minutes, followed by hours of time-consuming paperwork and processing by EmployBridge employees.
Since the implementation, applicants can now access the application process online at any time, from any computer with an Internet connection. Easy-to-understand instructions carefully guide them through each step, helping to ensure that forms are fully completed with the proper information. Applicants also can electronically “sign” and submit documents such as W-4 forms, which eliminates the need to fax, mail or hand deliver documents that require a signature. As a result of the OAE solution, EmployBridge processes four times as many applicants as it was processing previously, improving the organization’s ability to find the right person for the right job.
For EmployBridge managers, OAE has helped reduce tasks that could take hours to mere minutes. Managers can quickly review each application to determine the best candidates for specific job opportunities. Detailed qualification checks required by each client are conducted automatically, helping to increase the speed and accuracy of the qualification process.
“We can calculate a clear return on investment with our OAE solution, based on greater efficiencies and lower operating costs,” Loope said. “Equally important, this solution has helped us serve our applicants and clients even better ― and that’s always our goal at EmployBridge.”

Seton Hall University Students Powered by Windows 8

Press release:

Seton Hall University Students Powered by Windows 8
July 26, 2012
Seton Hall provides Windows 8 and Windows Phone devices and Microsoft Office 365 for education to incoming freshmen and returning juniors in 2012 and beyond.
REDMOND, Wash. — July 26, 2012 — Beginning with the class of 2016, Seton Hall University will provide incoming freshmen with Windows 8 to help create a new and dynamic learning environment and better prepare students to enter the workforce after graduation. The university also made the decision to standardize on Windows to help reduce its IT support and mitigate ongoing maintenance costs while also providing comprehensive security, reliability and management across thousands of devices.
“We have a responsibility to give all our students access to the technology they need to be successful learners today, as well as future leaders in the workplace,” said Dr. Gabriel Esteban, president, Seton Hall University. “By putting the most advanced mobile computing system in the hands of all of our students, regardless of prior experience or socio-economic background, we are leveling the playing field and creating opportunities for tomorrow’s servant leaders.”
Seton Hall University has been at the forefront of using technology to expand the impact of education and accelerate students’ growth for the past 14 years through the school’s Mobile Computing Program, which provides a standard laptop to all its undergraduates as part of their tuition and fees. However, incoming freshman and returning juniors this year will receive Samsung Series 7 tablets or Samsung Series 5 ultrabooks running Windows 8. More than 1,200 students have already received this technology, and when school resumes this fall, nearly 2,500 students will be using Windows 8 devices as part of their academic experience.
“From students’ perspectives, Windows 8 delivers an environment that allows them to be as productive as possible,” said Stephen Landry, chief information officer, Seton Hall. “They want integration of their tablet experience with their desktop experience, and products like Microsoft Office 365 for education help make that possible. Other devices out there have the form factor and battery life, but miss the mark on offering efficient content creation and consumption.”
Along with tablet and laptop devices, Seton Hall has also equipped incoming freshmen with the Windows Phone-based Nokia Lumia 900 and Office 365 for education. Windows Phone aids students with seamless integration with the students’ Windows 8 desktop environment, providing them with access to familiar programs and documents on both devices. These tools make the process of keeping up on academic work and connecting with other students and professors effortless.
Seton Hall will also upgrade the entire campus to Office 365 for education, Microsoft’s communications and collaboration cloud suite, which provides email, shared calendars, Microsoft Office Web Apps (such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint), video and online meeting capabilities, and document sharing to academic institutions. This will ensure that not just students, but also faculty and staff have a familiar user experience across all their devices, allowing for greater productivity and teamwork, no matter what compatible device they are working on at any given time.
“Windows 8 provides us with the ability to manage thousands of devices on our campus network that other operating systems just didn’t provide,” Landry said. “We couldn’t manage these devices without the help and the tools that Microsoft has provided.”
“Microsoft really has the right vision for creating a dynamic learning environment for students,” Landry said. “With Windows 8, students can create and collaborate seamlessly with each other, regardless of the device they have with them.”
