With the combination of Appcelerator's Titanium Studio and the OpenShift Platform-as-Service (PaaS) developers can create and deploy scalable iOS, Android, Windows Phone and Mobile Web applications using open standards. By developing in standard JavaScript, Titanium Studio creates native applications that can be deployed to the Apple App Store and Google Play. On the back-end, developers can use open source languages and frameworks such as Java EE, Node.js, Ruby and MongoDB and deploy them to the OpenShift PaaS to be scaled and managed in the cloud.
Announcing an integrated front-end and back-end development environment
Today the Red Hat OpenShift Module for Titanium Studio is available for download [1] in the Appcelerator Marketplace. Developed by Appcelerator in collaboration with Red Hat, the free module allows developers using Appcelerator Titanium Studio to deploy back-end mobile application code to the cloud in Red Hat’s OpenShift PaaS.
This means mobile application developers can now create front-end and back-end code in the same development environment and deploy the front-end code to mobile app stores and the back-end code to the OpenShift platform. We see a terrific validation of OpenShift PaaS in Appcelerator’s choice to integrate the OpenShift platform into the Appcelerator Titanium Studio experience.
Mobile developers want scalable cloud services
The May 2012 Appcelerator / IDC Q2 Mobile Developer Report found that 83% of mobile developers plan to use cloud services. [5] Many of these services are being sought out because of the difficulty in developing back-end server-side capabilities, particularly for developers focused on client-side activities. These mobile services need scalable application infrastructure that can keep up with changing workloads as mobile users come and go. If an application is “hot” or a corporate event causes a lot of activity, the back-end needs to scale while remaining secure.
While mobile developers want to create the best experience in their applications, they don’t want to spend their time bogged down in setting up back-end stacks, handling scaling and security, patching stack versions or any of the other administration tasks that are required in running a scalable service. OpenShift addresses these issues for them by leaving developers free to focus on what really matters: code and customers.
Developers can use Appcelerator Titanium Studio and OpenShift for free. Appcelerator’s App Explore tier is free and includes access to Titanium Studio, analytics and more. The OpenShift PaaS free tier enables developers to run mobile back-ends for languages including Ruby, Node.js, Java EE, Python and PHP along with databases such as MySQL and MongoDB utilizing up to 1.5 GB memory and 3 GB storage. Developers will be able to purchase increased capacity as their applications scale.

Through this Red Hat technology combination, Ferrotec is increasing scalability, flexibility and performance while lowering operating costs.
Headquartered in Japan, the Ferrotec Group also has a large presence throughout Europe. In line with the company’s growth and additional business requirements, its IT infrastructure expanded with the purchase of new servers and an increase in memory capacity. As the company's IT systems peaked, performance began to decrease, creating the need for a modern technology infrastructure to meet Ferrotec’s business demands.
In mid 2011, Ferrotec’s legacy systems and IT infrastructure could only be administrated with major effort. Therefore, Ferrotec’s IT team, together with its core management team, embarked on a fundamental modernization and transition to a virtualized infrastructure.
Ferrotec assessed possible alternative solutions together with GONICUS, an IT service provider out of Arnsberg, Germany, that has been working for Ferrotec for many years. GONICUS, a Red Hat Advanced Partner, specializes in infrastructure and virtualization strategy, and is one of the largest independent service providers for open source software in Germany. As Ferrotec began planning its migration strategy, one of the critical requirements for the new infrastructure was to continue the existing installation based on Linux. Ferrotec found what it was looking for from OpenV3 from Magirus, one of Europe’s leading providers of IT solutions and a value-added distributor of Red Hat, based in Stuttgart. OpenV3 includes solutions from Cisco, EMC and Red Hat in a best-of-breed strategy that combines into an infrastructure package that can be implemented rapidly.
Ferrotec’s new IT infrastructure has reaped several important benefits in areas such as administration, maintenance and service, especially when compared to its former, heterogeneous infrastructure. By consolidating its server landscape, Ferrotec is anticipating lower operating costs as the same number of staff can supervise a larger number of systems and applications.
“We analyzed other virtualization alternatives in the market, but the high-performance enterprise management feature set and low TCO Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization provides was an ideal combination for what we needed for our systems,” said Joachim Schwender, head of IT at Ferrotec. “We now have a fully functional datacenter with Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization at its core. Our new virtualized infrastructure allows us to balance performance, flexibility and administration requirements. RALEIGH, NC – July 25, 2012 – Red Hat, Inc. (NYSE: RHT), the world's leading provider of open source solutions, today announced that the Belgian Royal Meteorological Institute (KMI) has migrated to Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization. This deployment is expected to provide considerable cost savings by optimizing the efficiency of the organization’s existing servers.
KMI provides weather forecasts by analyzing large amounts of meteorological data. Due to the nature of its services, KMI relies heavily on its IT environment and therefore requires a highly available, around-the clock infrastructure. An advocate of open source solutions, it had been a satisfied Red Hat Enterprise Linux customer for six years before deciding to virtualize its systems and applications on Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization.
The aim of the project was to optimize the organization’s use of technology resources and simplify the execution of activities, including systems management, testing developments, migration and new applications introduction. KMI chose Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization due to the benchmark results achieved with the solution’s Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) hypervisor technology.
Migration to Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization will allow KMI to optimize the use of its IT resources, lower costs and minimize server downtime. The virtualization platform supports DNS servers, DHCP, webmail, an FTP production server for exchanges with KMI customers as well as a server for the Zimbra Collaboration Suite, which provides email, calendar and contact management.
“Thanks to Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization, we expect to not only be able to realize good cost savings, but also enjoy a very high standard of IT performance, in compliance with our strong open source views,” said Emmanuel Strobbe, systems engineer at KMI. To migrate to Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization, KMI had to bid farewell to several UNIX and Microsoft Windows servers. Its new Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization for Servers platform supports KMI's virtual servers that run on Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Microsoft Windows software, such as Windows login-server, Windows domain server with Active Directory and an antivirus server for Windows updates. The hardware consists of a cluster of four Dell PowerEdge R710 servers with EMC NX4 storage.
The switchover to a virtualized infrastructure will be executed in phases and should be completed by the end of 2012. The operational team already uses the new software for weather prediction and experimentation.

The virtualization platform supports DNS servers, DHCP, webmail, an FTP production server for exchanges with KMI customers as well as a server for the Zimbra Collaboration Suite, which provides email, calendar and contact management.
“Thanks to Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization, we expect to not only be able to realize good cost savings, but also enjoy a very high standard of IT performance, in compliance with our strong open source views,” said Emmanuel Strobbe, systems engineer at KMI. To migrate to Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization, KMI had to bid farewell to several UNIX and Microsoft Windows servers. Its new Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization for Servers platform supports KMI's virtual servers that run on Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Microsoft Windows software, such as Windows login-server, Windows domain server with Active Directory and an antivirus server for Windows updates. The hardware consists of a cluster of four Dell PowerEdge R710 servers with EMC NX4 storage.
The switchover to a virtualized infrastructure will be executed in phases and should be completed by the end of 2012. The operational team already uses the new software for weather prediction and experimentation.

The rich array of features in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.3 originates from many sources including Red Hat engineers, partners, and customers, as well as the open source community. Through the innovation harnessed through a strong and vibrant ecosystem, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.3 provides enterprises with mature, stable technology supported by its award-winning worldwide support organization.
Red Hat Enterprise Linux continues to reinforce its position as a leading operating system within hybrid environments – where customers expect consistency, stability, yet flexibility – to create standard infrastructure patterns across physical, virtual, and cloud environments. This is demonstrated by features including secure disk wiping, and live volume re-sizing of virtual guests. They represent the marriage of key capabilities, such as security and storage resource management, with next-generation architectures including cloud and virtualization.
With minor releases of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, enhancements are made to take advantage of the most recent advancement from hardware OEMs. This includes updated device drivers for a multitude of peripherals, and also various features like compiler optimization for the Intel Xeon E5 processor family.
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.3 includes enhancements and new capabilities providing rich functionality particularly in the areas of developer tools, virtualization, security, scalability, file systems, and storage. Highlighted below is a small subset of the new features and enhancements in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.3.
Developer Tools: In addition to OpenJDK6 support in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6, the newly introduced OpenJDK7 allows customers running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.3 to develop and test with the latest version of open source Java. The Red Hat Developer Day is scheduled for June 26th at the 2012 Red Hat Summit & JBoss World. Virtualization: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.3 helps smooth migration to a virtualized environment. This is achieved with the help of new Virt-P2V tools that can easily convert a Red Hat Enterprise Linux or Microsoft Windows system running on physical hardware to run as KVM guests. This release implements a more robust mechanism to protect data associated with defunct virtual machines. The method by which virtual disk images are securely wiped has been enhanced to allow greater security and stronger compliance with Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI-DSS).
Security: Users can now use two-factor authentication for securely accessing their Red Hat Enterprise Linux environment. This type of authentication mechanism is more secure than simple password based authentication. Two-factor authentication is being adopted into enterprise environments and is often referenced in industry standards. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.3 also includes advanced encryption capabilities so data blocks can be encrypted in parallel by taking advantage of underlying multi-processor capabilities. This is supported by the introduction of AES-CTR (Advanced Encryption Standard Counter Mode) cipher for OpenSSH. AES-CTR is well suited for high-speed networking environments.
Scalability: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.3 continues to test the outer bounds of scalability for an operating system platform by increasing the maximum number of virtual CPUs (vCPUs) per guest to 160 from 64. This is significantly higher than the 32 vCPU per guest limit for VMware ESX 5.0. The maximum supported memory configuration for KVM guests has also been increased from 512GB to 2TB.
File Systems: File system improvements include O_DIRECT support in FUSE (File system in user space). When enabled, all FUSE reads and writes go directly to storage, bypassing the server cache. This capability can lead to more consistent response times and predictable access to data by multiple accessors for certain use-cases, including database writes and deduplication. GFS2 (shared storage file system) can now read and write data to the disks faster than in previous releases for certain use-cases. In addition, file system check utilities for GFS2 can now be used to check the integrity of the older GFS1 file system.
Storage: The Logical Volume Manager (LVM) now provides support for RAID levels 4, 5, and 6 to simplify overall storage administration by consolidating all management functions, such as creating and re-sizing volumes, deploying RAID, and taking snapshots into a single interface. It is now possible to deploy Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 as a FCoE based storage target server providing the high level of reliability and performance available with native Fibre Channel but at a significantly lower cost. This feature complements the FCoE Initiator support that was delivered in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.0.
Subscription Management: With Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.3, by default customers can use Red Hat Subscription Management (SAM), an enhanced subscription management capability using X.509 certificates that allows customers to effectively manage subscriptions locally and report on subscription distribution and utilization. This helps facilitate compliance, upgrades, and long-term planning. Customers register their systems using Red Hat Subscription Manager to the Red Hat award-winning customer portal or an instance of Red Hat Enterprise Linux SAM. Customers who used RHN Classic subscription management with prior releases of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, can continue to use it or migrate to Red Hat Subscription Management.

Red Hat JBoss Data Grid 6 provides several new features designed to help enterprises reduce the need for relational databases and scale application development for better big data management.
The challenge of managing massive amounts of data is one that enterprises are facing on a greater scale than ever before. That challenge will continue to evolve, with industry research indicating that by 2015, global Internet traffic will reach the zettabyte threshold, up four times from 2010.1 And while this traffic explosion is driving an increase in the number of data-driven applications, capturing, retaining and using all of this data can be costly for organizations to scale and manage. Traditional structured and relational data management technologies now present economic and technical hurdles for organizations to extract the true value from their increasing data.
Based on the popular JBoss Community project Infinispan and including components from JBoss Enterprise Application Platform and JBoss Operations Network, Red Hat JBoss Data Grid 6 is an integrated product that enables enterprises to more easily implement large, transactionally aware data grids. Red Hat JBoss Data Grid provides an open approach to data grids by providing support for both Java and non-Java applications, as well as support for multiple client access points including REST, memcached and Apache Hot Rod. - Putting big data to work - Red Hat JBoss Data Grid 6 supports high-volume workloads with low-latency and optional transactional support, providing support for real-time application use cases such as trading, logistics and e-commerce.

’m thrilled to announce that on June 28 the Red Hat Women’s Leadership Community will sponsor a luncheon at the 2012 Red Hat Summit and JBoss World in Boston featuring BBC World News America Washington Correspondent Katty Kay.
In 2009, Kay and Claire Shipman, correspondent for Good Morning America, co-wrote Womenomics: Write Your Own Rules for Success and illuminated the hidden power women have within today’s workforce. Companies with more female managers yield higher profits, Kay reports, and factors like a looming talent shortage mean that women today have more control over their careers than ever before—if they’re willing to take hold of it. Womenomics offers a roadmap for doing just that. I’m inspired by Kay’s message, because I see the value that women bring to Red Hat every day. Diversity of thought and varying leadership styles strengthen organizations, preparing them for global growth and opportunity. Workers today are increasingly interconnected by social technology that makes it easy to share information and ideas on a global scale. As a result, innovation is happening on a faster timeline than ever—what some have deemed the collaboration curve. It’s no surprise that 21st century leaders need to rely less on control and compliance than their predecessors, and instead lead in a more open source way, through influence, inspiration, and a compelling long-term vision. This shift toward open source leadership principles brings new opportunities to women, because women tend to be natural collaborators and influencers who excel at sharing ideas, building consensus, and fostering communities of passion. I am excited to see what the future holds for women in corporate leadership and the value they bring to their companies.
