Lockheed Martin, Microsoft to Take EPA to the Cloud

Press release from Microsoft:

Lockheed Martin, Microsoft to Take EPA to the Cloud
Oct. 31, 2012
Microsoft Office 365 to improve EPA’s access to communications and mobility tools.
REDMOND, Wash., and ROCKVILLE, Md. — Oct. 31, 2012 — Lockheed Martin and Microsoft Corp. received a $9.8 million contract to migrate the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to Microsoft Office 365, a cloud-based collaboration and communication service. This transition will improve EPA employees’ access to communications and mobility tools and will offer the EPA significant cost savings by reducing the agency’s energy footprint. The new system is expected to save the agency approximately $12 million over the four-year contract period.
“EPA and Lockheed Martin have a long and productive relationship. I am excited to have them assist us in transforming the way our employees work and collaborate with one another,” said Malcolm Jackson, assistant administrator for the Environmental Information and chief information officer at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Under the terms of the contract, approximately 25,000 EPA employees will be transitioned to Office 365 for Government, a new multitenant service that stores U.S. government data in a segregated community cloud and includes email, calendars, scheduling and collaboration tools for internal and external use. Lockheed Martin will manage the migration and provide engineering and ongoing integration services. The primary email migration will be completed in early 2013.
“Lockheed Martin has supported the IT needs of the EPA for more than 35 years,” said Frank Armijo, vice president of Lockheed Martin Energy Solutions. “By providing cloud-based tools that facilitate collaboration, communication and cost savings across the agency, our team is dedicated to the EPA’s mission.”
Lockheed Martin has several cloud services such as the proven Solutions as a Service (SolaSTM) secure cloud delivery innovation, which combines domain expertise, proven processes and smart technology. The corporation began its investment in cloud solution development in early 2008, with its first cloud implementation in early 2009. Since then, Lockheed Martin has been on the front lines of the cloud evolution, developing innovation centers, flexible cloud computing solutions and alliances with partners to provide the most comprehensive solutions to customers.
“The EPA will continue to lead the pack on environmental stewardship, and moving an IT environment to the cloud is a natural part of that,” said Greg Myers, vice president of Microsoft Federal. “There is tremendous potential in the cloud, not only for transforming the way government employees work, but also for helping agencies meet their environmental and energy efficiency goals. Microsoft cloud services are backed by the latest innovations in datacenter design and energy efficiency, providing agencies with a unique opportunity to help reduce their energy consumption, generate cost savings, and reduce the environmental impact of their overall technology footprint.”
Microsoft delivers a variety of technologies that meet the unique needs of government agencies and their missions. These include private, public and government community cloud offerings, as well as on premises solutions and hybrid architectures. The EPA joins a growing list of government agencies that have chosen to embrace cloud computing with Microsoft, including the Federal Aviation Administration, the state of California, the Defense Information Systems Agency, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which stands as the single largest U.S. government cloud deployment to date.
Lockheed Martin Energy Solutions provides comprehensive services to utility and commercial customers. The corporation has eight federal, state and local agencies, and is part of the top 10 largest utilities corporation’s Information Systems & Global Solutions-Civil business. IS&GS-Civil is responsible for a wide array of IT systems and technical services in the United States to run areas such as energy efficiency programs and provide smart grid, healthcare, transportation, information and cybersecurity solutions, citizen protection and space exploration.

Chico State Gains Data Center Efficiencies, Trains Students on Today’s Business Tools by Building on a NetApp Storage Foundation

Press release from NetApp:

Chico State Gains Data Center Efficiencies, Trains Students on Today’s Business Tools by Building on a NetApp Storage Foundation

CSU, Chico Grows Its Peer-Hosting Capability, Realizes Efficiencies, and Better Prepares Students Thanks to a Donation from NetApp
SUNNYVALE, Calif. – October 29, 2012 –When California State University, Chico, began running out of hosting capacity in their systems running SAP software for the SAP University Alliance program, a consortium of universities worldwide that use SAP applications to support classroom instruction, it was time to seek out a new architecture. Chico State needed to provide better access to more products to more schools so that a larger number of students could receive the training in business processes and enterprise systems technology they needed to prepare them for today’s competitive job market.
With a donation from NetApp (NASDAQ: NTAP) worth more than $950,000, Chico State was able to build its hosting center on a cloud-based storage infrastructure that provided far greater capacity and a much-reduced energy footprint. As a result, the school has been able to reduce energy costs and space requirements while offering more students the opportunity to work with the market and technology leader in business management software.
Under the SAP University Alliance, Chico State and four other peer-hosting centers around the globe are able to teach their students accounting and business concepts using state-of-the-art, real-world technology in the classroom while providing the same experience for the students at other University Alliance member universities.
A member of the SAP University Alliance since 1996, Chico State began sharing its SAP expertise in 2000 by hosting other colleges. As the demand for hosting services grew, adding incrementally to a jumble of standalone servers and storage subsystems became increasingly unmanageable and was beginning to limit the program’s reach. This required Chico to refresh its data center infrastructure to include a cloud storage foundation to increase overall data center efficiencies and securely store information from a growing number of schools on a single architecture. To address this challenge, the school partnered with NetApp to build a storage solution that would house the vital SAP software and serve as the backbone for its hosting center operation.
With NetApp’s help, Chico State implemented a FlexPod® architecture that enables multiple SAP products addressing different academic needs to be rolled out quickly to meet each school’s specific requirements. Developed as a cloud infrastructure with NetApp as the storage foundation, Chico State has become a service provider for more than 140 schools in North and South America that are providing an SAP-enhanced education to 100,000 students per year. Leveraging the VCS NetApp® plug-in to the VMware control panel, Chico State can now provision SAP clients for each university customer with ease while providing enhanced system performance and integrity.
Supporting Quotes
  • Jim Sager, chair, Department of Business Information Systems, California State University, Chico:
“As one of the most well-known and respected learning institutions in the California State University system, Chico State has to ensure that its IT infrastructure is up to date to maintain the level of service we provide to our own students, faculty, and staff and those of the universities we serve. The SAP University Alliance Program provides a great opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience with the same software used in today’s enterprise, better preparing them to enter the technology workforce. NetApp’s donation helps us reach more students as the number of those enrolled in the program continues to grow.”
  • Regina Kunkle, vice president, State and Local Government and Higher Education, NetApp:
“Attracting more students into programs that will give them real experience for the competitive job market is one of NetApp’s key goals. Better preparing students for real-world business applications is a great outcome for the school and for the community. Our technology allows Chico State to cut costs, reduce energy use, and provide a great benefit to its students.”
Additional Details
  • Since installing the new system, the university has downsized computing hardware space by 80%, and the maximum power draw of the system means that there will be at least 60% power reduction and 70% less heat dissipation compared to the previous infrastructure.
  • With the new system in place, new university clients can be added quickly and seamlessly, giving faster turnaround so that more students have access to training on software that is so vital in today’s business world.
  • Deduplication is also critically important, because storage demands are growing rapidly.

I.B.M. Reports Nanotube Chip Breakthrough

By JOHN MARKOFF

I.B.M. scientists are reporting progress in a chip making technology that is likely to ensure the shrinking of the size of the basic digital switch at the heart of modern microchips for more than another decade.

The advance, first described in the journal Nature Nanotechnology on Sunday, is based on carbon nanotubes, exotic molecules that have long held out promise as an alternative material to silicon from which to create the tiny logic gates that are now used by the billions to create microprocessors and memory chips. The I.B.M. researchers at the T.J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, N.Y., have been able to pattern an array of carbon nanotubes on the surface of a silicon wafer and use them to build chips that are hybrids of silicon and carbon nanotubes with more than 10,000 working transistors.

Against all expectations, the silicon chip has continued to improve in both speed and capacity for the last five decades. In recent decades, however, there has been growing uncertainty over whether the technology will continue to improve. The end of the microelectronics era would inevitably stall a growing array of industries that have fed off the falling cost and increasing performance of computer chips.
