BMC Software Delivers Easy Path to Cloud Computing

BMC Software Press Release:

BMC Software Delivers Easy Path to Cloud Computing

BMC ZipKit and BMC Express Cloud programs offer the most efficient, cost-effective ways to get started with the Cloud

SAN JOSE, Calif., October 31, 2013 – As cloud computing goes mainstream, businesses of all sizes are looking for a fast, intuitive and easy way to leverage the incredible power of the platform.

To meet this demand, BMC Software today launched two new programs aimed at making it easier for customers to get from “zero-to-cloud” in as little as 30 days. BMC ZipKit and BMC Express Cloud are designed as a solution bundle that delivers a cost-effective starter cloud to enterprises with a 30-day implementation time, giving the customer a quick cloud project win while providing the foundation of a scalable, long-term enterprise cloud.

Many companies create clouds that are complex, prone to failure and lack the foundation required for a real enterprise cloud offering.  In contrast, BMC offers a comprehensive, robust solution that can be quickly delivered in a straightforward and successful way.
  • The BMC Express Cloud program is a bundled solution that combines software, consulting services, and training to deliver customers an enterprise-class hybrid cloud, connecting a private cloud to Amazon Web Services, in 30 days or less.
  • The BMC ZipKit program includes a rich library of pre-built application components for the BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management and BMC BladeLogic management systems.
The leader in enterprise IT management software, BMC worked directly with customers to tailor these solutions so that IT departments can launch fast, secure, cost-effective access to the many advantages offered by the Cloud.  Both solutions aregenerally available (GA).

Key Points to Know:

  • BMC Express Cloud
    • For a fixed low price of $199,000 (USD), customers get:
      • Enterprise-class hybrid cloud using VMware private cloud and Amazon public cloud built on BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management by professional cloud-builders.
      • A Cloud Solutions Planning Workshop to help plan your project
      • 250 managed server licenses, allowing your cloud to service both development and production requirements.
      • Educational services to train your staff how to operate and maintain your new hybrid cloud.
      • Quick implementation time - 30 days or less so you can deliver a successful cloud project on time and in budget.
  • BMC ZipKits feature:
    • Free downloadable content for Cloud Lifecycle Management and BladeLogic.
    • ZipKits for Cloud:  BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management Service Blueprints for common business services.
    • ZipKits for BladeLogic:  BMC BladeLogic server automation packages to address common configuration, compliance, and provisioning needs.
    • ZipKit Community: Customer generated content freely shared focused on best practices, rapid collaboration, and knowledge transfer.
Supporting Perspectives

John Frazier, vice president, Cloud Technology, JDA:
"JDA Cloud Services customers demand a dynamic cloud based environment that can be spun up quickly and then continue to grow with their needs.  The flexible, cost-effective, enterprise-focused cloud solutions from BMC -- built with pre-packaged content – helps accelerate our cloud customer acquisition and growth."

Mary Johnston Turner, vice president, Enterprise System Management Software, IDC Research:
"In the era of IT consumerization, mobility, big data and cloud, IT organizations need to become more agile and responsive to business priorities.  Pre-defined service and infrastructure provisioning blueprints, such as those provided by the newly launched BMC ZipKits, can increase use of automation and enable IT teams to quickly and consistently deploy new resources while maintaining service levels and eliminating human error.  This type of capability is a critical enabler of dynamic cloud data center operations."

Dave Roberts, senior director, Cloud Management, BMC Software:
“With the addition of these two products to the robust BMC cloud portfolio, any business can deploy trusted, enterprise-grade cloud services to their users in less than a month.  It’s a huge milestone, but more importantly, it will be a catalyst for more businesses to move into a cloud-based environment that is powerful and affordable.”

University of Alberta and Cisco collaborate to further health-care research

PRESS RELEASE

University of Alberta and Cisco collaborate to further health-care research

Cisco Research Chair to develop innovative health-care solutions

EDMONTON, AB – October 22, 2013 - The University of Alberta and Cisco today announced the establishment of a Cisco Research Chair in Healthcare Solutions, which will focus on how advanced technologies and strategies can support health care.
The chair will involve research, development and innovation in the use of transformational technologies that can drive collaboration, productivity and efficiency in the health-care sector in Canada and around the world.
"The University of Alberta has a long history of advancing health research by translating ideas that began as concepts in a lab and applying them to create new technologies that save lives," said Lorne Babiuk, vice-president of research at the U of A. "This collaboration with Cisco will help the U of A spearhead new research and discoveries, with a goal of improving the quality of life for more patients and further entrench Alberta as a global centre of innovation."
Cisco is providing $2 million over 10 years to establish the research chair. The chair will also foster development between and among the health-care industry and government while supporting and leading academic research, development and innovation at the university.
"Cisco is focused on building collaborative partnerships with universities, governments and leading organizations across the country to help foster innovation, increase productivity and support economic and social development," said Nitin Kawale, president of Cisco Canada. "The University of Alberta has a global reputation for leadership in health research. The establishment of this chair is part of a long-term plan to explore the significant role technology can play in improving productivity and health-care service delivery. We look forward to continuing to work with the university, the Government of Alberta and Alberta Health Services to develop a strategic plan to share expertise, foster innovation and implement advanced technologies to further advance Alberta's leadership in health care."
The Cisco Research Chair in Healthcare Solutions is Pierre Boulanger of the Department of Computing Science. Boulanger will use advanced technologies and strategies to create a research, development and innovation program that will lead to transformational architectures, technologies and solutions for health care.
Boulanger's work will help advance the U of A's reputation as one of the world's top research-intensive universities while working closely with the university's other chairs to enhance innovation, training and educational activities.
"Information and communication technologies have great potential to address many challenges facing health-care systems around the world in providing accessible, cost-effective, high-quality services," said Boulanger. "In North America, information technology already contributes in significant ways to enhancing health-care delivery and improving quality of life. One of the challenges and goals of my chair will be deploying new technologies and information science in developing countries where we have only scratched the surface. With this spirit of collaboration, we have a great opportunity to deliver meaningful results that will lead to better health systems and healthier patients."
About the University of Alberta The University of Alberta in Edmonton is one of Canada's top teaching and research universities, with an international reputation for excellence across the humanities, sciences, creative arts, business, engineering, and health sciences. Home to more than 39,000 students and 15,000 faculty and staff, the university has an annual budget of $1.7 billion and attracts nearly $450 million in sponsored research revenue. The U of A offers close to 400 rigorous undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs in 18 faculties on five campuses—including one rural and one francophone campus. The university has almost 250,000 alumni worldwide. The university and its people remain dedicated to the promise made in 1908 by founding president Henry Marshall Tory that knowledge shall be used for "uplifting the whole people."

New measurement study pursues scientific understanding of when viewers complete watching video ads and when they abandon them

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – October 22, 2013 – Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the leading provider of cloud services for delivering, optimizing and securing online content and business applications, today announced the publication of a new scientific study that leveraged data from hundreds of millions of online videos and advertisements measured using the Akamai Sola Analyticsmedia measurement and analysis product. The research paper, "Understanding the Effectiveness of Video Ads: A Measurement Study," coauthored by S.S. Krishnan and R.K. Sitaraman, will be presented at the ACM Internet Measurement Conference (IMC) in Barcelona on Thursday, October 24, 2013.

The study analyzed in aggregate 367 million videos and 257 million ads from over 3,000 publishers that were viewed by 65 million unique users worldwide. Among the key findings:
  • The position of an ad has the single largest impact on completion rate, with a mid-roll ad 18.1 percent more likely to be completed than the same ad as a pre-roll, and pre-rolls 14.3 percent more likely to be completed than the same ad as a post-roll.
  • Repeat visitors to a site have higher completion rates for ads on that site than one-time visitors to that site.
  • Viewers are more tolerant of video ads than of slow-loading videos. Viewers who must wait 10 seconds for their video to load are three times more likely to abandon than users who spend the same amount time watching a pre-roll ad.
  • Users who abandon ads leave early. One-third of the abandoners leave at or before the quarter-way mark and two-thirds at or before the halfway mark in the ad.
  • Ads that play within long-form content such as TV episodes and movies complete at a higher rate (87 percent) than those that play in short-form content such as news clips and sports highlights (67 percent).
  • Time of day and day of week do not affect ad completion rates substantially.
"This study is unique in that it goes above and beyond tracking and comparing completion rates, and rather takes an in-depth look at when viewers complete watching video ads and when they abandon them," said Dr. Ramesh K. • Energy-Efficient Ethernet and Wake-on-LAN features reduce power consumption in power-hungry data centers
Synopsys, Inc. (Nasdaq:SNPS), a global leader providing software, IP and services used to accelerate innovation in chips and electronic systems, today announced the availability of the DesignWare Enterprise 40G Ethernet MAC and PCS Controller IP as part of Synopsys' complete Enterprise 40G IP solution. The rise of "mega data centers" comes with significant pressure to reduce their size, power consumption and cost of operation. With support for Energy-Efficient Ethernet (EEE) and Wake-on-LAN, the DesignWare Enterprise 40G Controller IP enables system architects to meet low power and low latency requirements for data center applications, including software-defined networking (SDN) and low-power micro servers. In addition, the DesignWare Enterprise 40G Ethernet MAC and PCS Controller IP are compliant with the IEEE 802.3ba specification in IEEE 802.3-2012, enabling designers to configure and implement the IP in their SoCs with less risk and improved interoperability.
"Due to the focus on improved power efficiency in data centers, transmitting enormous amounts of data over Ethernet networks requires more high-speed I/Os and CPU cores per chip to optimize performance per watt," said Jag Bolaria, senior analyst at the Linley Group. "Next-generation server-on-a-chip designs are combining external system logic and interfaces such as 40G Ethernet, DDR3L/DDR4 SDRAMs, PCI Express and SATA to reduce server size and power. This new wave of servers-on-chips will be enabled by third-party IP providers such Synopsys, who provide a broad range of IP for these applications."
With the growth in power-hungry enterprise server applications, support for low-power features is a key differentiator in data center SoCs. The DesignWare Enterprise 40G Ethernet Controller IP reduces power consumption by incorporating the Wake-on-LAN feature, which detects LAN wake-up frames and magic packet frames in power-down mode. This feature, used in conjunction with the system's existing power-down modes, allows designers to enable/disable functions as needed. Standard interfaces support easy PHY integration for 1G to 40G speeds so designers can select the data rate they need for their current project, with a clear path to higher speeds for future designs.
In addition to incorporating the Wake-on-LAN feature, DesignWare Enterprise 40G Controller IP supports the IEEE 802.3az specification for Energy-Efficient Ethernet (EEE) to further reduce power consumption during periods of low link utilization. The EEE standard takes advantage of systems' idle times to reduce power consumption by up to 50 percent while maintaining compatibility with existing equipment. Reducing power consumption is not only an energy-saving opportunity, but also enables higher port density, lowering costs for end users.
The DesignWare Enterprise 40G Controller IP is part of Synopsys' data center IP portfolio, which includes IP for 1G/10G/40G Ethernet, DDR4/3, PCI Express 3.0/2.0, USB 3.0/2.0, SATA 6G and the ARM AMBA AXI4 and AMBA 3 interconnect; logic libraries and embedded memories; and ARC processors. The portfolio incorporates key data center features such as low latency, low power, multi-port memory, I/O virtualization, data center bridging, FIS-based switching, TCP segment offload and Energy-Efficient Ethernet. By providing the IP needed for data center SoCs, Synopsys enables designers to work with a single, trusted IP provider to lower integration risk and achieve their design goals faster.
"As a leading provider of Ethernet IP with more than 450 Ethernet IP design wins, Synopsys continues to deliver high-quality Ethernet IP solutions that incorporate the necessary power, performance and latency features required for today's advanced SoCs in data center applications," said John Koeter, vice president of marketing for IP and systems at Synopsys. "The addition of the DesignWare Enterprise 40G Ethernet Controller IP to Synopsys' comprehensive IP portfolio for data centers helps designers quickly deploy innovative networking and server SoCs to the market, enabling the growth of next-generation cloud computing."
