SAP® Solutions Transform the World’s Largest Sailing Event, 2013 Kieler Woche
SAP News Release:
SAP® Solutions Transform the World’s Largest Sailing Event, 2013 Kieler Woche
June 18, 2013 | SAP - Industries
SAP NEWSBYTE - As part of its broader push to transform the sports and entertainment industry with leading technology, SAP AG (NYSE: SAP) is continuing its partnership with the world's largest sailing event, the Kieler Woche, taking place June 22-30 in Kiel, Germany. Since first partnering with the event in 2010, SAP technology has helped sailors improve their performance, made it easier for fans to track and understand the race and delivered real-time insights to media.
"We have been working with the Kieler Woche team on solutions that enhance the regatta for sailors, spectators and the media," said Jim Hagemann Snabe, co-CEO, SAP AG. "Our innovative technology provides sailors with tools to analyze and improve their performance, make well-informed decisions and adjust their strategy as needed — in real time."
Bringing sailing fans and spectators closer to the action, the official regatta website will feature an online "SAP Live Center," available in German and English, making the regatta action accessible to an international audience. New this year, SAP will deliver the English version of Kieler Woche TV on the regatta website, providing three hours of live daily race footage and expert SAP commentary. For the first time at Kieler Woche, SAP will also hold "Regatta Reviews" on the Audi Main Stage, enabling all sailors to benefit from SAP expert analysis. More information on how to participate in sailor debriefs and Regatta Reviews is available on the regatta website and at the "SAP Sailors Lounge" on site.
"SAP continues to play a major role in international sailing and we are thrilled to continue working with our longstanding partner for the 2013 Kieler Woche," said Nikolaus Rickers, CEO, Point of Sailing Marketing GmbH. "SAP solutions are not only assisting the development of sailing around the world but have helped our regatta run more efficiently than ever before. SAP has implemented solutions that enhance the regatta for sailors, spectators and the media, and we are confident that their support will help us to once again deliver a world-class event."
The new technology builds on the platform of innovations from SAP that enhance the Kieler Woche experience for participants. These include sailing analytics that display race information in real time and give access to the latest data with the click of a button; post-race replays and visualizations; onsite debriefs between SAP technology experts and sailors; and the "Race Committee" mobile app, which allows the race committee, spectators and other stakeholders to easily schedule races, communicate race starts and ends, register start violations and update race status.
SAP announced the sports and entertainment industry as its 25th vertical industry segment in May at the SAPPHIRE® NOW conference. SAP and Leading Financial Firms Tap Into Next Generation to Create Future Capital Markets Transformation
SAP News Release:
SAP and Leading Financial Firms Tap Into Next Generation to Create Future Capital Markets Transformation
June 18, 2013 | SAP - Industries
SAP NEWSBYTE - To help capital markets companies gain insight into the changing market and drive industry co-innovation, SAP AG (NYSE: SAP) today announced the “Designing Tomorrow’s Capital Markets” contest. Supported by the SAP University Alliances program, financial engineering university students are invited to share ideas for new technology solutions for the financial markets. The goal of the contest is to create and identify future capital markets models to help provide a connected, interactive and engaging customer experience. “Designing Tomorrow’s Capital Markets” was announced at SIFMA Tech 2013, held June 18-19 in New York City.
When it comes to understanding the technologies available for handling big data, capital markets firms are struggling on two fronts: IT organizations need to manage it effectively and the business side needs to know how to use it. Regulations and legacy systems also add an extra layer of complexity. “Designing Tomorrow’s Capital Markets” aims to enable students from major financial engineering schools around the U.S. to engage directly with SAP and leading financial firms to develop their ideas for business and technology innovations. The contest will address current and future industry challenges, new technologies such as in-memory and cloud computing as well as development and investment efforts. Participating faculties may include the contest as part of their curriculum. Sample submission categories include, but are not limited to, alpha generation, next-generation risk management and market and reference data, as well as social impact and impact of sentiment analytics and cloud.
To further develop their ideas, winners will participate in a design-thinking workshop, a collaborative approach to product development, with experts from participating capital markets firms and SAP to be held in New York City. The design thinking process focuses on the human side of things — how technology affects customers. Finalists will also have the opportunity to present their ideas at theSAPPHIRE NOW conference in 2014.
SAP is inviting global acting capital markets companies across the U.S. to sponsor the contest. Actively participating capital markets firms will gain key customer insights, play a role in selecting the winning ideas and may engage directly with the successful contestants. Major capital markets research and advisory firm TABB Group has agreed to support and assist the program.

Garmin Announces Next-Generation maps + more Portable Infotainment Device for Volkswagen up! Compact Car
Garmin News Release:
18 JUNE 2013 @ 6:00 AM / AUTOMOTIVE/MOBILE /
OLATHE, Kan./June 18, 2013/Business Wire — Garmin® International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN), the global leader in satellite navigation, today announced the next-generation maps + more portable infotainment device for Volkswagen up! vehicles. maps + more provides a comprehensive infotainment package, including navigation, a media player, vehicle information and Bluetooth hands-free capabilities. The next-generation maps + more live device from Garmin adds connected services, such as real-time traffic and weather information, local search provided by Yelp as well as safety camera warnings. Users simply connect their smartphone to the device via Bluetooth to enable the services[1], utilizing their existing data plan. The portable device features a five-inch touchscreen and is fully integrated into the vehicle. maps + more live is available now as a factory-installed option for Volkswagen up! vehicles in Australia and Europe.
“maps + more live packs the features of a fully integrated infotainment system into a portable device that is connected, can easily be updated and provides excellent value,” said Peter Schubert, vice president automotive OEM at Garmin Würzburg GmbH. “We’re thrilled to partner with Volkswagen on such an innovative project and look forward to delivering our leading infotainment technology to Volkswagen up! customers.”
Navigation and Connected Services
Garmin provides Volkswagen up! drivers a comprehensive navigation feature set with spoken turn-by-turn directions and an intuitive map interface with crisp graphics and 3D landmarks for clear orientation. Additional navigation functions include lane assistance, speed limit warnings, route tracking, parking and TMC traffic information. Users can easily control the system via voice command. One-shot address entry, for example, allows users to simply speak an address without taking the hands off the wheel or the eyes off the road.
Utilizing the user’s existing smartphone data plan, maps + more live provides crucial real-time information, such as traffic, weather, local search provided by Yelp as well as safety camera warnings. All users need to do is connect their smartphone to the device via Bluetooth. Garmin’s live services are available free for the first four weeks and available for a one-time fee of 29.95 euros afterwards. Since the device is portable, updating the maps is easier than with conventional in-dash navigation systems. Users simply install a dedicated software program on their computer and connect their device to download the latest maps. Lifetime[2] map updates are available for a onetime fee of 99 euros (19.95 within the first 30 days of use).
Media Integration
maps + more live lets users easily control crucial radio functions on its 5-inch touchscreen screen. It also integrates an MP3 player and an SD card slot to easily transfer songs. Bluetooth hands-free provides an intuitive and safe solution for making phone calls in the car without touching the phone or looking at its display, thus helping reduce driver distraction. The integrated Bluetooth hand-free functionality also enables drivers to listen to their favorite music from their smartphone through the car’s speakers. Whenever the device gives turn-by-turn directions, music will automatically fade out.
Vehicle Information
The portable device has access to the CAN bus of the car to provide information on average fuel-consumption, driving time and the number of revolutions per minute (RPM). The system also warns the driver if the car is low on fuel, so he can navigate to the closest gas station. The integrated Think Blue. Trainer analyzes driving behavior and provides feedback on fuel consumption to help drive more eco friendly and save money on gas.
Furthermore, the Garmin system supports other crucial vehicle functions. A parking assistant uses sensors to provide audio signals as well as visual guidance on the device screen to help drivers get into a parking spot. The integrated door warner informs drivers when vehicle doors aren’t entirely closed.
maps + more live is available now as a factory-installed option for Volkswagen up! vehicles at 390 euros.

Cognizant Announces Clinton Global Initiative Commitment to Washington, D.C. Maker Faire
Cognizant News Release:
Cognizant Announces Clinton Global Initiative Commitment to Washington, D.C. Maker Faire
Initiative Brings Young STEM Makers to the National Mall
Jun 14, 2013
TEANECK, N.J., June 14, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Cognizant (NASDAQ: CTSH) will announce its commitment to partner with the National Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (NCEI) to develop several initiatives aimed at fostering development and interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) through in-person experiences for young people in the United States. The program will use the National Mall as the main platform to connect young 'Makers' from across the country. NCEI and Cognizant will announce the Commitment at CGI's closing plenary session today.
The initiative will launch "Young Makers on the Mall", bringing Young Makers to Washington every summer from 2014 to 2016, and will be the first Maker Faire"the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth" to take place in Washington, D.C. A second initiative, "Entrepreneurship is Citizenship" will focus on reinventing the class trip for students by focusing on entrepreneurial and creative, hands-on experiences in the nation's capital. The overall goal of the initiative is to reach 50,000 youth in the U.S in order to build their creative confidence and inspire them to reach their full productive potential as entrepreneurs, inventor and innovators.
This commitment builds directly on Cognizant's prior CGI Commitment to Maker Corps, a Maker Education Initiative to provide mentoring and education to children through hands-on experiences in after school programs. Two years ago, Cognizant made a decision to dedicate resources towards increasing the U.S. STEM pipeline. Since then, the company has launched its STEM scholarship and Making the Future programs to unleash the passion of young people in STEM disciplines, and funded over 30 after-school and summer programs in 18 states across the U.S.
"It is our mission to generate as much interest in STEM education and careers as possible," said Mark Greenlaw, Cognizant's Vice President of Sustainability and Educational Affairs. "What better place to do it than in our nation's capital. It is our hope that young people will find inspiration not only in our nation's leaders, but also through their exposure to the innovation and entrepreneurialism happening in Washington, D.C."
In April, Cognizant joined Cisco, SanDisk, HotChalk, AfterCollege and others, to pledge an investment of more than $2 million in private start-up funds to launchUS2020, a new initiative aimed at advancing STEM education and mentoring in the U.S. to enhance the country's global competitiveness. Additionally, the founding organizations committed to substantially increasing their level of volunteerism with a long-term goal of mobilizing one million STEM mentors annually by the year 2020.
