The study analyzed in aggregate 367 million videos and 257 million ads from over 3,000 publishers that were viewed by 65 million unique users worldwide. Among the key findings:
- The position of an ad has the single largest impact on completion rate, with a mid-roll ad 18.1 percent more likely to be completed than the same ad as a pre-roll, and pre-rolls 14.3 percent more likely to be completed than the same ad as a post-roll.
- Repeat visitors to a site have higher completion rates for ads on that site than one-time visitors to that site.
- Viewers are more tolerant of video ads than of slow-loading videos. Viewers who must wait 10 seconds for their video to load are three times more likely to abandon than users who spend the same amount time watching a pre-roll ad.
- Users who abandon ads leave early. One-third of the abandoners leave at or before the quarter-way mark and two-thirds at or before the halfway mark in the ad.
- Ads that play within long-form content such as TV episodes and movies complete at a higher rate (87 percent) than those that play in short-form content such as news clips and sports highlights (67 percent).
- Time of day and day of week do not affect ad completion rates substantially.

Synopsys Extends DesignWare IP Portfolio for Data Center SoCs with Enterprise 40G Ethernet Controller IP
Synopsys News Release:
Synopsys Extends DesignWare IP Portfolio for Data Center SoCs with Enterprise 40G Ethernet Controller IP
DesignWare IP Optimized to Address Throughput and Quality-of-Service Requirements in Modern Data Center SoCs
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Oct. 22, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --
Highlights:
"Due to the focus on improved power efficiency in data centers, transmitting enormous amounts of data over Ethernet networks requires more high-speed I/Os and CPU cores per chip to optimize performance per watt," said Jag Bolaria, senior analyst at the Linley Group. "Next-generation server-on-a-chip designs are combining external system logic and interfaces such as 40G Ethernet, DDR3L/DDR4 SDRAMs, PCI Express and SATA to reduce server size and power. This new wave of servers-on-chips will be enabled by third-party IP providers such Synopsys, who provide a broad range of IP for these applications."
With the growth in power-hungry enterprise server applications, support for low-power features is a key differentiator in data center SoCs. The DesignWare Enterprise 40G Ethernet Controller IP reduces power consumption by incorporating the Wake-on-LAN feature, which detects LAN wake-up frames and magic packet frames in power-down mode. This feature, used in conjunction with the system's existing power-down modes, allows designers to enable/disable functions as needed. Standard interfaces support easy PHY integration for 1G to 40G speeds so designers can select the data rate they need for their current project, with a clear path to higher speeds for future designs.
In addition to incorporating the Wake-on-LAN feature, DesignWare Enterprise 40G Controller IP supports the IEEE 802.3az specification for Energy-Efficient Ethernet (EEE) to further reduce power consumption during periods of low link utilization. The EEE standard takes advantage of systems' idle times to reduce power consumption by up to 50 percent while maintaining compatibility with existing equipment. Reducing power consumption is not only an energy-saving opportunity, but also enables higher port density, lowering costs for end users.
The DesignWare Enterprise 40G Controller IP is part of Synopsys' data center IP portfolio, which includes IP for 1G/10G/40G Ethernet, DDR4/3, PCI Express 3.0/2.0, USB 3.0/2.0, SATA 6G and the ARM AMBA AXI4 and AMBA 3 interconnect; logic libraries and embedded memories; and ARC processors. The portfolio incorporates key data center features such as low latency, low power, multi-port memory, I/O virtualization, data center bridging, FIS-based switching, TCP segment offload and Energy-Efficient Ethernet. By providing the IP needed for data center SoCs, Synopsys enables designers to work with a single, trusted IP provider to lower integration risk and achieve their design goals faster.
"As a leading provider of Ethernet IP with more than 450 Ethernet IP design wins, Synopsys continues to deliver high-quality Ethernet IP solutions that incorporate the necessary power, performance and latency features required for today's advanced SoCs in data center applications," said John Koeter, vice president of marketing for IP and systems at Synopsys. "The addition of the DesignWare Enterprise 40G Ethernet Controller IP to Synopsys' comprehensive IP portfolio for data centers helps designers quickly deploy innovative networking and server SoCs to the market, enabling the growth of next-generation cloud computing."
Availability
DesignWare Enterprise 40G Ethernet PCS and MAC Controller IP are available now. In addition, the IP for data center applications, including IP for 1G/10G Ethernet, DDR4/3, PCI Express 3.0/2.0, USB 3.0/2.0, SATA 6G and the ARM AMBA AXI4 and AMBA 3 interconnect; logic libraries and embedded memories; and ARC processors are all available now.

Introducing the All New Mac Pro—The Most Radical Mac Ever
Apple Press Info:
“The new Mac Pro is our vision for the future of the pro desktop, everything about it has been reimagined and there has never been anything like it,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “The new Mac Pro packs up to 12-core Xeon CPUs, dual FirePro GPUs, ultra-fast ECC memory, new PCIe flash storage, Thunderbolt 2 expandability and more into a radical new design that is one-eighth the size of the previous generation Mac Pro.”
“From the blazing fast performance of DaVinci Resolve to real-time video capture with UltraStudio 4K, Mac Pro is a revolution in pro desktop design and performance,” said Grant Petty, CEO of Blackmagic Design.
“With the Mac Pro’s dual workstation-class GPUs, we’ve seen MARI run five times faster, creating a fluid painting experience that’s unlike anything we’ve seen. This kind of performance is a digital artist’s dream,” said Bill Collis, CEO of The Foundry.
“At 20Gbps, Mac Pro’s Thunderbolt 2 blows away anything on the market and completely changes the external storage landscape,” said James Lee, CEO of PROMISE Technology.
The all-new Mac Pro is architected around a unified thermal core that allows the system to efficiently share thermal capacity across all the processors. An innovative fan draws in air incredibly efficiently and makes the new Mac Pro as quiet as a Mac® mini. The result is a pro desktop with unprecedented performance packed into a design that is just 9.9-inches tall and one-eighth the volume of the previous Mac Pro.
Reinvented from the inside out, Mac Pro is designed to tackle even the most demanding workflows. The new Mac Pro features 4-core, 6-core, 8-core or 12-core Intel Xeon processors running at Turbo Boost speeds up to 3.9 GHz that deliver double the floating point performance of the previous generation Mac Pro. Two workstation-class AMD FirePro GPUs with up to 12GB of video memory provide up to seven teraflops of compute power and up to eight times the graphics performance of the previous generation Mac Pro.* OpenGL and OpenCL are optimized in OS X® Mavericks to leverage the full computing power of the Mac Pro CPU and dual GPUs.
The new Mac Pro features PCIe-based flash storage that delivers sequential read speeds up to 1.2GBps and is up to 10 times faster than conventional desktop hard drives. ECC DDR3 running at 1866 MHz, with a four-channel memory controller, gives the new Mac Pro up to 60GBps of memory bandwidth, twice that of the previous generation Mac Pro.* The spectacular power and bandwidth of Mac Pro means you can seamlessly edit full-resolution 4K video streams and play them in real time.
Featuring an incredible six Thunderbolt 2 ports, each with up to 20Gbps of bandwidth per device, the all-new Mac Pro completely redefines desktop expandability. Thunderbolt 2 ports support up to six daisy-chained devices each, giving pros the ability to connect up to 36 high-performance peripherals—from external storage devices, to multiple PCI expansion chassis, to audio and video breakout boxes. Thunderbolt 2 uses existing copper or optical Thunderbolt cables and is completely backward compatible with existing Thunderbolt peripherals and cables, and also supports the latest 4K displays. A new self-configuring IP over Thunderbolt software feature in OS X Mavericks provides a fast link between Thunderbolt-enabled Macs.
The new Mac Pro provides unparalleled power for Apple’s professional apps, including Final Cut Pro® X, Logic® Pro X and Aperture®. Final Cut Pro X has been optimized to support dual GPUs for improved real-time playback performance, faster rendering, quicker export, and 4K video monitoring through Thunderbolt 2 and HDMI. Flash storage makes importing and exporting thousands of high-resolution images faster with Aperture. Logic Pro X takes advantage of flash storage for incredibly fast project load times and Thunderbolt 2 for a high number of channels of ultra-low latency audio I/O without the need for add-on PCI cards.
The new Mac Pro ships with OS X Mavericks. Mavericks is the 10th major release of the world’s most advanced operating system and is available for free from the Mac App Store℠. In addition to more than 200 new features, Mavericks introduces features for power users including Finder® Tabs, Tags and enhanced multi-display support, as well as new core technologies for breakthrough performance such as Compressed Memory to keep your Mac fast and responsive. Mavericks also delivers significant performance enhancements for systems with dual GPUs through optimized OpenGL and OpenCL. For more information or to download Mavericks visit www.apple.com/osx/.
