Executive Insights: Achieving Digital Trust in a World of Data

Cybersecurity is at a critical tipping point.  With massive volumes of data being generated and analyzed across the globe every day from a variety of sources and devices, an entirely new approach to network security is required. From both a business and technology perspective, traditional security paradigms are struggling to be agile and fast enough to move at the speed required in this new world.  How do companies successfully lead in a world that is being transformed by technology and the utilization of valuable data? The linchpin to success going forward will be a business’ ability to flexibly secure its sensitive data and create digital trust with its customers and ecosystem.

Fake Chrome extensions inject code into web pages

Recently, here at our research lab, we have seen an increase in the number of JS/Chromex.Submelius threats detected. In countries like Colombia, Peru, Ecuador and Chile, the detection levels for this particular threat have been as high as 30% or 40% of the total threats for the entire country.
This is a trojan that redirects the user’s browser to a specific URL, which contains another kind of malicious content. Given the high detection levels for this threat, which primarily targets Chrome, currently one of the most popular web browsers, we set out to find out how the threat is being propagated and how a user might fall into its trap.

10-Second Looks at Marketing Through Snapchat Spectacles

Snapchat spectacles were introduced last year as a means to take very short videos to post to Snapchat. Reactions to the glasses were pretty strong; the spectacles were in demand, but not easy to come by. But what about now? Are these devices something that businesses should pursue, or are they a technological oddity? To find out how important these wearable cameras will be in the future, we asked members of the Young Entrepreneur Council:
“Do you see Snapchat Spectacles being a game-changer for small business marketing? If so, how?”

Staying Compliant in Financial Services and How Cybersecurity Solutions Can Help

Today’s cybersecurity threats target all parts of the network and nearly every device attached to it, making the potential threat landscape virtually boundless. When you pair technically skilled criminals with the attractiveness of financial data, trying to keep information safe is a constant battle. With this in mind, organizations like the SEC and FINRA have developed initiatives to help guide the financial services industry towards success, and at the same time, to also hold breached organizations accountable if they were inadequately prepared.

Scam calls: Can you hear me, mother?

Sandy Powell was a Yorkshire-born comedian who was well known for the catchphrase ‘Can you hear me, mother?’, with which he used to introduce his radio shows. It may not sound particularly amusing nowadays, but from time to time such catchphrases catch the ear of the world at large, often generating amusement simply through repetition, rather than any intrinsic wit. You might say that they become popular because they’re popular, in the same way that some celebrities seem to be famous for being famous, rather than for any special talent or achievement. In this case, it seems that a phrase originally used as a filler during an awkward moment on a radio show amused his audiences for several decades.

Will cybercrime and other cybersecurity issues undermine the digital economy?

Many countries are counting on a booming digital economy to create higher paying jobs, improve productivity, and deliver future prosperity. So these countries should be concerned by any signs that this growth is being undermined by an erosion of trust in, and growing fear of, digital technology. Because I think there are signs of this happening, I decided to ask 1,000 adults in the US the following question:
Do you think problems with digital technology, like computer hacking and network outages, pose a risk to your security and wellbeing?

Linux Shishiga malware using LUA scripts

Among all the Linux samples that we receive every day, we noticed one sample detected only by Dr.Web – their detection name was Linux.LuaBot. We deemed this to be suspicious as our detection rates for the Luabot family have generally been high. Upon analysis, it turned out that this was, indeed, a bot written in Lua, but it represents a new family, and is not related to previously seen Luabot malware. Thus, we’ve given it a new name: Linux/Shishiga. It uses 4 different protocols (SSH – Telnet – HTTP – BitTorrent) and Lua scripts for modularity.

Machine learning and math can’t trump smart attackers

When you’ve been fighting black-hat hackers for decades, you learn a thing or two about them. Obviously, they are bad, and they like to play with code. But most importantly, they’re continually learning and you need to keep up if you want to protect your customers’ businesses from their sticky fingers.
Now, if we were a post-truth security vendor, we would talk a lot about how our machine learning makes us fit for the fight, or how mathematics can predict an attacker’s every move. We would also try to downplay the fact that even advanced technologies can be fooled by adversaries.

Solutions - 65V, 8A (IOUT), Synchronous Step-Down Silent Switcher 2 Delivers 94% Efficiency at 2MHz & Ultralow EMI/EMC Emissions

MILPITAS, CA and NORWOOD, MA – April 25, 2017 – Analog Devices, Inc., which recently acquired Linear Technology Corporation, announces the LT8645S, an 8A, 65V input capable synchronous step-down switching regulator. Its unique Silent Switcher® 2 architecture uses two internal input capacitors as well as internal BST and INTVCC capacitors to minimize the area of the hot loops. Combined with very well controlled switching edges and internal construction with an integral ground plane and the use of copper pillars in lieu of bond wires, the LT8645S dramatically reduces EMI/EMC emissions. This improved EMI/EMC performance is not sensitive to board layout, simplifying design and reducing risk even when using two layer PC boards. The LT8645S can easily pass the automotive CISPR25, Class 5 peak EMI limits with a 2MHz switching frequency over its entire load range. Spread spectrum frequency modulation is also available to lower EMI/EMC levels further.

Proven Ways to Increase Targeted Traffic to Your Ecommerce Store

Owning an ecommerce store has a lot of perks: It’s a self-run business available to anyone, it helps leverage an already existing online presence, it requires minimal overhead compared to traditional retail shops, and a good store has limitless revenue potential. Ecommerce stores epitomize the American Dream.

There is, however, some significant drawbacks to running an ecommerce hub; mainly having to compete with gargantuan marketplaces like Amazon, Alibaba, and eBay. In fact, many pieces have been published which discuss the fact that Amazon is crushing small businesses.

How to Increase Search Engine Rankings for a Redesigned Website

As a small business, your website is your greatest marketing tool and asset. You need to leverage it as such. It is the first thing that your customers are going to see. It can also be a strong customer acquisition tool to acquire customers through search engines, social media, etc.
Regardless of your size, it is always a good idea to redo your website and its design. My small business redesigns our website every year and a half. It is such a long process that, basically, once we finish the design, we start working on the next one. The reason for this? We see how much value it provides us with leads, and it is a crucial piece of our business.

Byline: IoT - Not as New As You Think

IoT is a sexy topic these days. It’s hard to open a magazine or blog without seeing statistics that project there will soon be more IoT devices online than there are teenagers on ClickChat. Like the growth of mobility and smartphones before it, IoT is a phenomenon that merits attention. But this time it’s different. IoT networks and devices play a crucial role in our global transition to a digital economy, and organizations that fail to adopt a digital business model may not survive. Which is why we also need to give credit to those who pioneered the use of IoT-like technologies — not just over the past few years, but for the past couple of decades.

Someday, passwords will likely be a distant memory.

For now, they are necessary -- as well as regularly re-used, and sometimes leaked when hackers access private information. When you forget yours, the process to log back into an account you're locked out of is clunky and not as secure as it could be.

Flashlight banking trojan discovered on Google Play

Android users were the target of another banking malware with screen locking capabilities, masquerading as a flashlight app on Google Play. Unlike other banking trojans with a static set of targeted banking apps, this trojan is able to dynamically adjust its functionality.
Aside from delivering promised flashlight functionality, the remotely controlled trojan comes with a variety of additional functions aimed at stealing victims’ banking credentials. Based on commands from its C&C server, the trojan can display fake screens mimicking legitimate apps, lock infected devices to hide fraudulent activity and intercept SMS and display fake notifications in order to bypass two-factor authentication.
