F5 is Driving the Market for More Effective Website Security and Management

Press release:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

F5 is Driving the Market for More Effective Website Security and Management

New F5 program offers free vulnerability assessments with leading testing partners, Cenzic and WhiteHat Security, enabling enterprises to dramatically reduce exposure to security breaches

SEATTLE, July 09, 2012
F5 Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: FFIV), F5 Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: FFIV), the global leader in Application Delivery Networking, today announced a new program that offers enterprise organizations free application vulnerability assessment scans. In partnership with two leading dynamic application security testing (DAST) partners, Cenzic and WhiteHat Security, the F5® program makes it easy for customers to try vulnerability assessment services—with no commitment. The program is designed to help enterprises accelerate their adoption of web application security best practices with an automated, accurate, yet simple solution to protect business assets. To support customers that need assistance in scoping their web application security status and to establish a roadmap to mitigate exposures, F5®Professional Services is introducing the BIG-IP® ASM® Vulnerability Mitigation Assessment service.
“The CIOs and CISOs I meet with are chartered with driving more services online, but are extremely concerned about the security risks in today’s dynamic threat environment,” said Manny Rivelo, EVP of Security and Strategic Solutions at F5. “Yet, in many cases, enterprises do not execute an application security strategy because they do not have proof that their applications are vulnerable. With this offering of free vulnerability scans, F5 is making it easier to build the business case for enterprises to adopt a web application security plan and ensure their applications are safe and their brand is protected.”

Automation Simplifies and Strengthens Security

By testing and rapidly remediating vulnerabilities, organizations can dramatically reduce their window of exposure to security breaches through comprehensive assessments, strong web application firewall policies, and automated virtual patching. Seamless integration between the DAST vendor’s XML API and F5’s BIG-IP Application Security Manager™ (ASM) v11.2 make it convenient for IT staff to: (1) perpetually test and verify application vulnerabilities; (2) automatically mitigate vulnerabilities with a single click; and (3) verify the efficacy of the mitigation by leveraging the DAST vendor product’s testing infrastructure. This is accomplished all within the F5 ASM interface.
The new F5 Professional Services offering helps customers hone in on the vulnerabilities identified by the Cenzic Cloudor WhiteHat Sentinel assessments by delivering a vulnerability mitigation assessment report that outlines the recommended approach to remediate vulnerabilities.
Learn more about F5’s “Free Scans” offering and best practices in web application protection by attending an F5 Security Forum entitled “Is it Time to Rethink Security?” being held in cities across the Americas starting July 10, 2012. F5 security experts, along with Cenzic and WhiteHat representatives, will be discussing today’s security challenges and how to address them. F5 customers, prospects, and partners can find more details and register for a forum here.

Supporting Quotes

“We’re excited to be the first F5 partner to have a unique single-click application testing solution that can be initiated directly from the BIG-IP ASM GUI. This empowers customers to patch vulnerabilities almost instantaneously without waiting for days,” said John Weinschenk, CEO of Cenzic. “Further, with vulnerability scans provided by Cenzic that are tightly integrated directly from ASM, enterprises can both simply trial and provision a complete web application security solution that allows them to review assessment results and conversion of the detected vulnerabilities into ASM blocking policies.”
“Building on our long-standing partnership with F5, we are delighted to be a key provider in the F5 ‘Free Scans’ program and applaud F5’s efforts and intensified focus in highlighting the importance of application security in the enterprise,” said Stephanie Fohn, CEO of WhiteHat. “Leveraging F5’s application delivery controller and WhiteHat’s 100-percent verified assessment results is the right solution for customers seeking to maximize the effectiveness of a high-performance web application firewall. In our recent Website Security Statistics report, we revealed that web application firewalls could have helped mitigate the risk of at least 71-percent of all custom web application vulnerabilities identified in 2011.”

Availability

F5’s “Free Scans” offering has released with BIG-IP ASM version 11.2, which is available today. Customers have access to free 30-90 day vulnerability assessments from Cenzic and WhiteHat. Organizations that do not have BIG-IP ASM v11.2 may receive a free evaluation license by contacting their F5 representative or channel partner. The new F5 Professional Services offering, BIG-IP ASM Vulnerability Mitigation Assessment service, will be available in August 2012.

F5 Networks DevCentral Gains Cloud Agility and Scale with Enterprise-Grade Control in the Bluelock Cloud

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

F5 Networks DevCentral Gains Cloud Agility and Scale with Enterprise-Grade Control in the Bluelock Cloud

Collaboration with industry leader Bluelock demonstrates how F5’s application delivery virtual appliances enable cloud advantages with an enterprise frame of mind

SEATTLE, June 13, 2012
F5 Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: FFIV), the global leader in Application Delivery Networking (ADN), today announced that it has migrated its global online community, DevCentralTM, to a cloud environment. DevCentral runs F5® cloud-enabled ADN solutions in multiple Bluelock Virtual Datacenters hosted in the public cloud, while adhering to IT best practices for scale, control, and security.
Until now, DevCentral was deployed in a one-size-fits-all enterprise IT environment that also supported financial applications and key business functions. To support the team’s business plans to grow and strengthen its global community, DevCentral needed to accelerate and optimize its DevOps initiatives.
“DevCentral has grown into a flourishing, global community of IT professionals who leverage F5 products to improve business agility. Rapid delivery of features and capabilities that make it easy for members to connect with peers, engage in discussion, and share best practices has always been a top priority,” said Jeff Browning, Sr. Director, Product Management at F5 Networks. “With our move to Bluelock’s public cloud environment, we’ve increased DevOps agility, achieving faster, more frequent application updates that optimize development cycles. This results in accelerated delivery of new features to satisfy our community, with the scale afforded by a more dynamic cloud environment—gracefully supporting our growth plan for years to come.”
DevCentral’s deployment of virtual cloud appliances mirrors traditional data center design, including best practices for routing and replication. Collaboration with Bluelock, where advanced cloud design comes together with proven F5 ADN capabilities, provides DevCentral with the following benefits:
  • Simplified lifecycle migration from development, to test, to production, resulting in more frequent, lower risk upgrades
  • Reduced complexity without relying on traditional replication schemes required for disaster recovery and high availability
  • Cost-effective operational consistency among all deployments to provide predictable configuration and testing
  • Clear visibility across infrastructure, platforms, and applications to provide edge-to-core troubleshooting, performance analysis, and more
  • Closer workgroup collaboration enabling DevOps through a common set of virtual data center tools and services shared between operations and development teams
“Bluelock and F5 Networks have a long history together, helping our mutual customers achieve agility and scalability in the cloud, and we can now take that to the developer community,” said Pat O’Day, Chief Technology Officer at Bluelock. “We’re pleased to see our partnership and Bluelock’s leading Virtual Datacenter solution directly helping the DevCentral team innovate and collaborate more easily while remaining secure—all in the spirit of building an even better community.”
“F5's DevCentral has been the gold standard for vendor-driven communities to date,” said Zeus Kerravala, Principal Analyst at ZK Research. “DevCentral allows IT departments to leverage the power of the community to help accelerate and customize data center operations and application support. By migrating DevCentral to a Bluelock cloud environment, F5 has further increased the value of DevCentral by ensuring customers are always working with the latest versions of F5's products and have access to all of F5’s capabilities. This will result in customers being able to leverage F5's technology faster, to a broader set of applications with minimal risk.”
Achieving Cloud Benefits with Assurance of Enterprise Best Practices
Many enterprises have reservations about migrating to the cloud due to security and performance concerns. Regardless of deployment location, websites face heightened risks in today’s multi-vector threat scenarios. Social communities, built on user engagement and interaction, expose even greater threat vectors. The lack of acceleration and optimization services in the cloud can inhibit the deployment of solutions to improve application performance. To address these security and performance risks, DevCentral has employed a multi-faceted security strategy that utilizes F5’s BIG-IP®Local Traffic ManagerTM with data center firewall services, BIG-IP Application Security ManagerTM, and BIG-IP Access Policy ManagerTM along with the BIG-IP Global Traffic ManagerTM, BIG-IP WebAcceleratorTM, and BIG-IP WAN Optimization ManagerTM solutions. Together, these represent an industry first: a true cloud-enabled ADN that delivers the agile benefits of the cloud while leveraging established best practices from the enterprise.
Today, F5 also announced a cloud licensing program that enables enterprise-class ADN solutions in the cloud. Providing a unified architecture for both private and public clouds with virtual editions of its award-winning BIG-IP platform, F5 now offers its advanced ADN solutions in a utility billing model.

F5 Expands Market Opportunity with IaaS Cloud Providers

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

F5 Expands Market Opportunity with IaaS Cloud Providers

F5 cloud licensing program offers first complete application delivery platform in the cloud

SEATTLE, June 13, 2012
F5 Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: FFIV), the global leader in Application Delivery Networking (ADN), today announced a new global cloud licensing program developed for Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) cloud providers. The F5® cloud licensing program offers benefits for IaaS cloud providers, their customers, and channel partners alike. By including virtual editions of BIG-IP® solutions as part of its cloud licensing program, F5 provides the first complete enterprise-class ADN solution in the cloud.
Enterprise IT customers transitioning to a cloud model are faced with tradeoffs. Cloud providers offering services typically require that IT relinquish control or create a unique management environment for off-premise applications. This often causes friction between the IaaS provider and enterprise IT, with the service provider having difficulty complying with IT’s preference to retain control and ensure that applications are available. Until now, IaaS cloud providers have had to buy the necessary infrastructure to sufficiently address these demands and support their customers. However, this creates an enormous amount of business risk for cloud providers, due to the reluctance of enterprise customers to sign long-term contracts or employ a predictive use model.
With the introduction of its new cloud licensing program, F5 addresses these requirements. Providing a unified architecture for both private and public clouds with virtual editions on its award-winning BIG-IP platform, F5 now offers its advanced ADN solutions in a utility billing model. This enables enterprise customers to leverage the same enterprise-class IT infrastructure that they have in their private clouds, while giving the IaaS cloud provider the ability to better manage their cash flow.
“F5’s new cloud licensing program brings the power of our ADN solutions to the cloud while offering the flexibility of a pay-as-you-go billing model,” said Jason Needham, Sr. Director of Product Management at F5. “Cloud providers can realize significant benefits from participating in this program, including a differentiated service offering, a larger target market, and enhanced revenue opportunities.”
Benefits of F5’s Cloud Licensing Program for IaaS Cloud Providers
The F5 cloud licensing program allows IaaS cloud providers to offer a full range of virtual BIG-IP solutions without incurring additional up-front costs. Additional benefits that IaaS service providers enjoy under the cloud licensing program include:
  • Advanced Services on a Complete Application Delivery Platform – IaaS cloud providers are able to branch out from competing solely on a price-per-compute basis and utilize all of F5’s BIG-IP Virtual Edition products to offer advanced ADN services and capabilities.
  • Utility Billing Model – F5’s cloud licensing program aligns with the traditional billing model utilized by IaaS cloud providers, where providers only pay for the number of instances in use.
  • Spin Up, Spin Down On-Demand – Flexible licensing allows IaaS cloud providers to offer fee-based, real-time ADN services with no up-front costs and no long-term commitment.
The First Complete Application Delivery Network in the Cloud
F5’s cloud licensing program enables the first complete cloud-based ADN stack. With virtual editions of BIG-IP solutions, enterprise customers receive advanced ADN features and services, including application delivery, performance, and security.
With the F5 BIG-IP platform, accessing the cloud is simplified without the impacts of vendor lock-in. IaaS cloud providers have the freedom to select a hypervisor and virtual infrastructure to meet the needs of their enterprise customers. Unlike other vendors, F5 supports both Citrix XenServer and VMware vSphere.
F5 offers access to a wide selection of products to support its new cloud licensing program, including:
The COHESION Cloud Program for F5 Channel Partners
In support of the cloud licensing program, F5 has created a unique channel-specific program, COHESION, which allows traditional channel partners to engage in cloud-specific opportunities and sell a specialized software solution to their qualified customers. Where other cloud licensing programs exclude the channel, under COHESION, F5 channel partners have the opportunity to engage with IaaS cloud providers. Visit F5’s Partner Resource Center for more information regarding COHESION.
F5 also announced today that it has migrated its global online community, DevCentral, to a cloud environment. DevCentral runs F5’s cloud-enabled ADN solution in multiple Bluelock Virtual Datacenters hosted in the public cloud, while adhering to IT best practices for scale, control, and security.
“Any time you have a customer that is unsure of the expected volumes or length of a project and wants to rent the infrastructure, we can’t win the deal without a pay-as-you-go business model,” said John Qualls, SVP of Business Development at Bluelock. “The F5 cloud licensing program opens up a lot more opportunity in the market than we have had access to traditionally.”

F5 Enables BT ‘Dual Stack’ Project to be IPv6-Ready

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

F5 Enables BT ‘Dual Stack’ Project to be IPv6-Ready

BT prepares for next generation of the Internet

LONDON, June 06, 2012
F5 Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: FFIV), the global leader in Application Delivery Networking, today announced that BT has implemented the BIG-IP® Local Traffic Manager™ (LTM®) solution to allow complete translation between IPv4 and IPv6 addresses in its existing network.
“We knew we needed to become more accessible to everyone using the Internet, whether they’re an IPv6 user or an IPv4 user, and the F5 solution has allowed us to do that without substantial re-engineering,” said David Osborne, IPv6 Programme Director, BT. “BIG-IP LTM sits in front of the web servers and handles the IPv6 configuration. In addition, the F5 team was very responsive and was able to turn the project around in short order.”
Industry-wide, major operators are looking forward to the next generation of the Internet, ensuring that they are ready forWorld IPv6 Day, taking place on June 6, 2012. From a global perspective, many Asia-based operators have already upgraded their infrastructures to accommodate IPv6, and European providers are now also preparing for their websites to concurrently support both IP address types.
Discussions between BT and F5 began at the start of 2012, with lab testing taking place just over two months ago. The solution has now successfully been implemented and the BIG-IP LTM device has been part of BT’s live network for the past week.
“Our solutions make it easy for organizations to upgrade their infrastructure so that they have an IPv6 address in place,” said John Gorbutt, Account Director, F5 Networks. “The BIG-IP platform was an ideal component of BT’s Dual Stack initiative, which aims to allow both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses to run alongside each other.”
“The Dual Stack project is about readiness for the next generation of the Internet, part of which is being IPv6-ready,” concluded Osborne. “F5’s solution helps ensure that web users searching for BT.com on either IP address system will be able to reach us, without restriction.”
To learn more about how F5 can help organizations support IPv6, please visit the company’s World IPv6 Day page athttp://www.f5.com/news-press-events/world-ipv6-day.html.

F5 Helps Organizations Improve User Experience and Simplify Management with First Integrated SPDY Gateway

News release:

F5 Helps Organizations Improve User Experience and Simplify Management with First Integrated SPDY Gateway

F5’s Application Delivery Optimization (ADO) solutions accelerate applications across public and private clouds to better support remote and mobile users

INTEROP, LAS VEGAS, May 08, 2012
F5 Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: FFIV), the global leader in Application Delivery Networking, today announced new application optimization capabilities for its Application Delivery Controller (ADC) product line. With this announcement, F5 is the first ADC vendor to offer integrated support for SPDY, a web protocol designed to optimize the user experience and bolster security. As part of the company’s Dynamic Data Center vision, F5 is extending its leadership in optimizing web-based applications across private, public, and hybrid cloud architectures.
Highlights of today’s announcement also include a number of new front-end optimization capabilities that streamline the delivery of image-heavy content, prioritize traffic to overcome mobile network latency, and offer visibility into application performance across hosted and cloud applications. F5 technologies serve as a strategic point of control for application acceleration, providing insight into the overall context of users, applications, and networks to ensure optimal delivery and avoid costly infrastructure changes.
“Today’s organizations are struggling to ensure a fast user experience within the changing landscape of cloud-based infrastructure and myriad mobile devices,” said Jason Needham, Sr. Director of Product Management. “With F5’s new ADO solutions, customers can optimize any web-based application without the need to spend millions of dollars upgrading their infrastructure or engaging in costly performance tuning.”
F5 technologies apply front-end, network, and data center optimizations in concert to improve overall application performance and enhance the user experience, regardless of device, browser, or location. Today’s announcement adds new technologies to F5’s portfolio such as image optimization, CSS object versioning, and content re-ordering. In addition, F5 solutions now provide an innovative approach for enabling SPDY protocol optimizations for any legacy application. F5’s new centralized application analytics capabilitiesenable streamlined performance monitoring across hybrid cloud environments without deploying or managing additional agents, code, or servers.

Details

Many industry vendors offer products that only address specific performance bottlenecks. Implementing these multiple technologies creates additional complexity and cost, perpetuating the growing problems companies are trying to solve within their data centers. With F5, customers can integrate optimization throughout the application delivery infrastructure, eliminating the need for point products.
Building on the BIG-IP® product family and the company’s TMOS® architecture platform, F5 provides easy-to-manage solutions capable of addressing organizations’ needs today and into the future. With the announcement, F5 continues to deliver on its commitment to improving application performance.
Highlights of F5’s new ADO solutions include:
  • Industry-Leading Support for SPDY Protocol
SPDY is an emerging web protocol that augments HTTP. Developed by Google, this protocol improves application performance up to 50 percent by enabling multiple data transfers within a single connection, as well as through compression, and client prioritization for enabled browsers like Chrome and Firefox. Historically, organizations needed to update their web server infrastructure to take advantage of SPDY’s performance improvements, adding cost and complexity to their systems. With F5’s SPDY Gateway, companies can take advantage of these performance improvements without updating their web application server infrastructure. F5 delivers this capability by translating SPDY requests into HTTP on the back end.
  • Front-End Optimization Capabilities that Enhance User Experience and Save Money
Users have come to expect mobile performance that is equivalent or better than that achieved on a typical desktop computer. However, mobile devices present unique challenges due to limitations of processing power, small screens, a variety of operating systems and browsers, and the latency and packet loss introduced by mobile networks. By understanding and addressing these factors comprehensively, F5 provides a superior experience for mobile and remote users with the delivery of image optimization, CSS object versioning, and content re-ordering.
According to HTTP Archive, images represent over 60 percent of content of a typical web page. F5’s advanced image optimization solution recognizes the user’s access environment and streamlines image delivery by adjusting image size appropriately for mobile devices, removing unnecessary metadata from the transmission, and converting the image format. Internal testing demonstrates F5’s image optimization reduces the size of images by up to 50 percent. This reduces page load times, as well as bandwidth needs and costs.
  • Visibility into Application Performance across Hosted and Cloud Infrastructures
F5’s Enterprise Manager™ Centralized Analytics Module helps customers monitor and understand application performance across multiple data centers without adding agents, code, or servers. This single view of relevant statistics provides critical visibility, enabling customers to monitor performance, identify potential bottlenecks, and better plan for IT needs. By providing real-time application performance metrics—such as application response time, network latency, and connection statistics—as well as diagnostic and troubleshooting information for each BIG-IP device, Enterprise Manager further quantifies the benefits of using F5’s optimization technologies.

Supporting Quotes

“An increasing number of enterprise applications require improved user experience if they are going to meet the expectations of external users and employees,” said Mark Fabbi, VP, Distinguished Analyst, Gartner. “Because of the heightened demands and complexities of mobile devices, cloud services, and application environments, enterprises are demanding more comprehensive solutions for web performance optimization.”
“Our business focuses exclusively on government and healthcare organizations—customers that depend on optimized application access to meet mission-critical service needs,” said Jim Sweeney, CTO at GTSI. “To ensure a positive user experience from any location or device type, our teams must be able to elegantly combine optimization technologies with other best-in-class application services. F5’s new ADO solutions provide significant advantages for customers looking to scale their infrastructures for remote and mobile users. In addition, we’re glad to see F5’s support for SPDY, as it will make it easier for organizations adopting the protocol to realize performance gains.”
