IBM THINK Exhibit App for iPad and Android Tablets Traces Ancient Roots of Modern Innovation

Press release:

IBM THINK Exhibit App for iPad and Android Tablets Traces Ancient Roots of Modern Innovation

ARMONK, NY - 26 Jul 2012: To celebrate centuries of science and technology innovations, IBM (NYSE: IBM) has reinvented its award-winning 2011 THINK exhibit at New York City's Lincoln Center as a free interactive app for iPad and Android tablets. Geared to tech fans and educators, the IBM THINK exhibit app is an "innovation time machine" that shows how early tools have evolved into modern advances that create healthier populations, greener energy and safer, less congested cities.
IBM THINK App for Tablets Traces Ancient Roots of Modern Innovation
Through interactive content and thousands of images and historical anecdotes, the IBM THINK Exhibit app is filled with stories of progress, from space exploration to weather prediction and medical advances. It documents the roots of Big Data, from early charts, clocks and scales to microscopes and telescopes, from RFID chips and biomedical sensors in clothing to breath-sensor diabetes detectors.

Other features include:
·         An interactive timeline that chronicles how the simple act of measurement has evolved since prehistoric times: measuring length in 2000 BC, time in 1657, the Earth’s rotation in 1851, and atoms in 1981. It traces the roots of modern technologies, from the abacus to the scanning tunneling microscope.
·         An explanation of how maps have been used to track data, from early geographical charts to data visualizations.
·         A section that chronicles how "models" have been used to understand the complex behaviors of our world - from the Wright Brothers' plane prototype in 1903, to today's airline mechanical parts simulations.
·         A 10-minute HD film edited from footage shot on location in China, India, Indonesia, Russia, Thailand, Turkey and the U.S. with a new camera rig that captures imagery simultaneously on three video cameras.
·         Subtitles in 10 languages (Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese and Spanish).

The app is inspired by IBM's 2011 THINK pop-up exhibit at New York's Lincoln Center, a 7,500-square foot interactive experience developed for the company's Centennial. Visitors were immersed in a film and interactive experience across 40 oversized digital screens. Cited for its design, the THINK exhibit has been placed in the Museum of Modern Art's permanent collection and received awards from the Industrial Designers Society of America, the Association of Independent Commercial Producers, and the Art Directors Club. Later this year, the exhibit will be installed at Walt Disney World's EPCOT Center in Orlando, Fla.

Additionally, IBM will be working with the New York Hall of Science to create lesson plans for middle school teachers that integrate the IBM THINK Exhibit app. As part of IBM's commitment to education, the company will help students better understand some of the scientific concepts behind THINK and inspire them to take innovative action that can improve their local communities. The lessons will be featured on Teachers TryScience a free web site that provides educators with high quality lessons linked with pedagogical and practical supports.
"The IBM THINK Exhibit app is designed for the 'forward thinker' in all of us and compels people to think about what it takes to make the world work better," said Lee Green, IBM's VP of Brand Experience and Strategic Design.
Earlier this year IBM released another tablet app for tech fans, Minds of Modern Mathematics, which reinvents the massive timeline of the history of math from 1000 AD to 1960 that was part of Mathematica: A World of Numbers...and Beyond, IBM’s 1964 World’s Fair exhibit designed by legendary duo Charles and Ray Eames. It offers biographies, milestones and images of artifacts culled from the Mathematica exhibit as well as a high-resolution image of the original timeline poster. The app was developed by IBM together with the Eames Office.

Making the world smarter is core to IBM's technological innovation. As demand grows for Big Data analytics gathered from roads, power grids and other sources, IBM is working to make the world smarter -- from the Jeopardy!-winning computer Watson that’s improving cancer diagnoses, to systems for forecasting weather and easing power consumption in cities around the world.

Press release:

NBC Olympics Launches two Apps Today for London 2012 Olympic Games
For immediate release

NBC Olympics Live Extra app to Live Stream 3,500+ Hours – Every Sport, Every Competition, Every Medal – to Multi-Channel Video Subscribers

NBC Olympics App to provide short-form Highlights, Schedules, Live Results, Columns, Athlete Profiles, and new Primetime Companion Feature

Both Apps Built and Powered by Adobe

NEW YORK – July 12, 2012 – NBC Olympics, a division of the NBC Sports Group, is launching two apps today, both built by and powered by Adobe (Nasdaq:ADBE), as part of its comprehensive coverage of the London 2012 Olympic Summer Games.

NBC Olympics Live Extra, will allow cable, satellite and telco customers to live stream more than 3,500 hours of content, including all 32 sports, every athletic competition and all 302 medal events. The second app, simply titled NBC Olympics, will provide short-form highlights, TV and online schedules, live results, columns and the new Primetime Companion feature – the ultimate complementary, second-screen experience for NBC's nightly primetime Olympic broadcasts.

“NBC Olympics Live Extra puts the London Olympic Games into the hands of America’s tablet and smartphone user, enabling us to once again use advances in technology to provide the broadest possible access to the thousands of hours of Olympic competition,” said Gary Zenkel, President, NBC Olympics. “The NBC Olympics app will be the definitive and most up to date source of information from the London Games, and the exclusive mobile source in the U.S. for London Olympic video highlights. It will also feature live results, dynamically served TV and online listings, and - during NBC primetime - a second screen for enhanced viewing and social interaction for when America again gathers each night for 17 nights to share in the incredible stories from London.”

NBC Olympics partnered with Adobe, which built both apps and is powering them through the conclusion of the Games. The NBC Olympics Live Extra and NBC Olympics apps are available on select Android handset and tablet devices within Google Play, and on the App Store for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

“It’s been great working with NBC Olympics to change the way live sporting events are experienced by consumers. NBC is now able to create, deliver, monetize and measure the Olympics across mobile devices – using tools and technologies that make up Adobe’s video solutions.” said David Wadhwani, senior vice president, Digital Media Business, Adobe. “We’re working closely with NBC Olympics and others to ensure viewers have a seamless viewing experience with two easy-to-navigate apps.”

Zenkel added, “NBC Olympics is confident that Adobe, a proven technology leader and longtime partner, will deliver the best mobile event application experiences America has ever seen.”

The entire Olympics mobile and tablet experiences were built by and are powered by technologies that make up Adobe’s Project Primetime, enabling NBC Olympics to create, deliver, verify, monetize and measure the Games across mobile and tablet devices.

NBC Olympics Live Extra
The NBC Olympics Live Extra app will live stream every athletic competition for the first time ever. In all, the app will live stream more than 3,500 total programming hours, including every athletic competition, all 32 sports, the awarding of all 302 medals as well as event rewinds. NBC Olympics Live Extra will also live stream the Olympic content that airs on the four NBCU cable channels – NBC Sports Network, MSNBC, CNBC and Bravo.

In another first, NBC Olympics Live Extra will provide multiple concurrent streams for select sports, such as gymnastics (each apparatus), track and field (each event), and tennis (up to five courts). For example, during a session of track and field, instead of viewing only a single feed that moves from event to event, a user can choose to watch a stream dedicated to a specific event, such as the long jump or javelin.

The vast majority of live stream content on NBC Olympics Live Extra will only be available to verified cable, satellite or telco customers. In order to access the live stream content, existing cable, satellite and telco customers should follow these verification procedures (note: customers must subscribe to a video tier that includes both CNBC and MSNBC):

Download the NBC Olympics Live Extra app
Open the app
Tap the “Touch Here & Get Ready” callout
Select your cable, satellite or telco provider
Enter the username and password that corresponds with your account
You are signed in throughout the Games on that device!
Customers with multiple devices should repeat the procedure on each device. Access to this content is free for customers as part of their video subscription -- there is no additional charge. For customers who do not have a username and password, they should contact their cable, satellite or telco provider to create one. More information about the process, including contact information for cable, satellite and telco providers, can be found at: www.nbcolympics.com/liveextra/help.

NBC Olympics Live Extra is available for free from the App Store on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch or at www.itunes.com/appstore.It is also available for free from Google Play on select Android devices or at www.play.google.com.

NBC Olympics
While NBC Olympics Live Extra will be the mobile and tablet home for live stream content, the NBC Olympics app will be the home for everything else Olympics, including short-form highlights, event schedules, TV and online listings, results, athlete profiles, columns and the new Primetime Companion feature.

The Primetime Companion is the ultimate complementary, second-screen experience for NBC's nightly primetime Olympic broadcast. Users can go deeper into the broadcast with trivia, polls, slideshows, videos and athlete bios all synced with what is being presented on NBC. The companion will also allow users to share the primetime experience with friends and family through a series of social tools connected through Facebook and Twitter. Synched to each device’s clock, the Primetime Companion will automatically appear when a user opens the app during NBC’s primetime broadcast.

NBC Olympics is available for free from the App Store on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch or at www.itunes.com/appstore.It is also available for free from Google Play on select Android devices or at www.play.google.com.

GE and Facebook Launch HealthyShare App

Press release:

19 June 2012
GE and Facebook Launch HealthyShare App

· New app, available on Facebook, allows people to share health goals and network with friends as a source of inspiration toward better health
· Olympic hopefuls Kevin Durant and Alex Morgan and Olympians Michael Johnson and Summer Sanders help consumers get healthier
· Kevin Durant: “All it takes is that first step and pretty soon good fitness becomes a habit. I hope people will take my HealthyShare challenge and feel inspired to take that step.”

FAIRFIELD, Conn.--19 June 2012-- (NYSE: GE) – In advance of the 2012 London Olympic Games, today GE announced the launch of a new Facebook app called HealthyShare, a new tool for people to share health goals, track progress against goals and use friends as sources of inspiration and motivation toward better health. The app makes it easier for consumers to kick start their health goals using the 17 days of the Olympic Games as a time to stay motivated around improving their health.
“Whether your goal is to lose weight, walk more or pursue an Olympic dream, GE believes that your friends can be good for your health. We want to give consumers a platform to get motivated around better health tapping into the Olympic spirit,” said Linda Boff, global executive director, digital, advertising and design, GE. “HealthyShare makes it easy for consumers to take something they are already doing – interacting with their friends online – and extend it in a fun and meaningful way around getting healthier.”
Paul Adams, global head of brand design for Facebook said, “Many research studies show that our friends can help us live healthier lives. By supporting each other, we increase people's motivation, helping them meet their goals of feeling better, and being healthier and happier. This new tool by GE is the first step in a vision to help people be healthier by interacting with their friends. The plan is to learn quickly from this release and continually improve this tool together in the coming months.”
The initial phase of the HealthyShare app is focused on fitness and helping people achieve and exceed their health and well-being goals one step at a time with the support of their online community and a little inspiration from Olympians.
Once people install the HealthyShare app on Facebook, they can commit to healthy choices:
  • Get Moving. A simple walk can raise LDL (good cholesterol) and lower HDL (bad cholesterol), lower your blood pressure, help manage your weight, improve sleep, and bolsters the immune system.
  • Eat Healthier. Whether it’s more protein or less fat, fewer calories or extra veggies, try changing just one thing that you eat or drink, and soon you’ll be on a healthier routine that you can keep for the rest of your life.
  • Workout like an Olympian. Olympic hopefuls Kevin Durant and Alex Morgan and Olympians Michael Johnson and Summer Sanders joined together to support HealthyShare by providing their fitness routines to inspire others to reach higher, go further, run faster, dream bigger, do better and live longer.
After making a declaration, HealthyShare becomes part of a person’s Facebook timeline. The app can be shared with friends who will become a part of the journey to better health by following progress, providing encouragement and even participating alongside each other.
“I couldn’t have gotten to where I am today without the people I respect challenging me to get to the top of my game,” said Kevin Durant, 2012 U.S. Olympic Hopeful, Men’s Basketball. “All it takes is that first step and pretty soon good fitness becomes a habit. I hope people will take my HealthyShare challenge and feel inspired to take that step.”

Mountain Lion Available in July From Mac App Store

Press release:

Mountain Lion Available in July From Mac App Store

SAN FRANCISCO—June 11, 2012— Apple® today announced that OS X® Mountain Lion, the ninth major release of the world’s most advanced desktop operating system, will be available in July as a download from the Mac® App Store™. Mountain Lion introduces more than 200 innovative features including the all new Messages app, Notification Center, system-wide Sharing, Facebook integration*, Dictation, Power Nap, AirPlay® Mirroring, Game Center and the enhanced security of Gatekeeper. With iCloud® built into the foundation of OS X, Mountain Lion makes it easier than ever to keep your content up to date across all your devices.

“The pace of innovation on the Mac is amazing, OS X Mountain Lion comes just a year after the incredibly successful launch of Lion,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “With iCloud built right in and the new Notification Center, Messages, Dictation, Facebook integration and more, this is the best OS X yet.”

Using your iCloud account, Mountain Lion makes it easier than ever to set up your Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Messages, Reminders and Notes. The new Reminders and Notes apps help you remember important tasks and jot down your thoughts quickly, while iCloud automatically keeps everything up to date. Documents in the Cloud works with iCloud-enabled apps including Apple’s iWork® suite so you can always access and edit your documents on any device.

The new Messages app replaces iChat® and brings iMessage™ to the Mac, so you can send messages to anyone with an iPhone®, iPad®, iPod touch® or another Mac. You can include attachments, high quality photos and HD video, and your iMessages appear on all your devices so you can pick up a conversation right where you left off. iMessage includes group messaging, delivery and read receipts, typing indicators and secure end-to-end encryption. The Messages app also supports traditional instant messaging services, including AIM, Yahoo!, Google Talk and Jabber.

Mountain Lion streamlines the presentation of notifications, and with Notification Center you can see all your notifications from OS X and third party apps in one convenient place. You can customize which apps send you notifications, the type of notification you receive, and how many items are shown in Notification Center. When you want to focus on your work or watch a movie, you can choose to temporarily suspend all notifications.

New system-wide Sharing is built into Mountain Lion, making it easier than ever to share links, photos, videos and other files. Clicking the Share button allows you to share quickly without having to switch to another app, and you just need to sign in once to use third-party services like Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and Vimeo. Facebook and Twitter are integrated with Notification Center so you can receive notifications when someone sends you a message or mentions you in a post or Tweet.

With built-in support for Facebook, you can post photos, links and comments with locations right from your apps. Once you’ve signed in, your Facebook friends automatically appear in Contacts with their profile photos. Your Facebook notifications work with Notification Center in Mountain Lion, and you can even update your Facebook status from within Notification Center.

Dictation is built into Mountain Lion and allows you to dictate text anywhere you can type, whether you’re using an app from Apple or a third party developer. Mountain Lion also introduces Power Nap, an innovative new feature that keeps your MacBook Pro with Retina™ display and MacBook Air (second and third generation) up to date while it sleeps. Power Nap automatically refreshes Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Reminders, Notes, Photo Stream, Find My Mac and Documents in the Cloud, and when plugged in, downloads software updates and backs up your Mac using Time Machine®.

The revolutionary new Gatekeeper feature makes downloading software from the Internet safer by giving you control over which apps can be installed on your Mac. You can choose to install apps from anywhere, just as you do today, or for maximum security you can set Gatekeeper to allow only apps from the Mac App Store. The default setting allows you to install apps from the Mac App Store and apps from developers that have a unique Developer ID from Apple. In addition to checking daily for security updates, Mountain Lion includes app sandboxing to keep misbehaving apps from compromising your system, and kernel ASLR for improved protection against buffer overflow attacks.

Additional new features in Mountain Lion include:
  • AirPlay Mirroring, an easy way to wirelessly send an up-to-1080p secure stream of what’s on your Mac to an HDTV using Apple TV®, or send audio to a receiver or speakers that use AirPlay;
  • Game Center, which brings the popular social gaming network from iOS to the Mac so you can enjoy live, multiplayer games with friends whether they’re on a Mac, iPhone, iPad or iPod touch;
  • a faster Safari® with a unified Smart Search Field, iCloud Tabs that present your open tabs across your devices, and a new Tab View to quickly swipe through them;
  • new features for China, including significantly improved text input, a new Chinese Dictionary, easy setup with popular email providers, Baidu search in Safari, built-in sharing to Sina Weibo and popular video websites Youku and Tudou; and

HEIGHTENED SECURITY IN NEW ANDROID APP STORE

PRESS RELEASES

HEIGHTENED SECURITY IN NEW ANDROID APP STORE

MOBILE SECURITY LEADER AVG TECHNOLOGIES PARTNERS WITH APP PLATFORM LIVEWIRE MOBILE, INC.

LITTLETON, MASS., and AMSTERDAM - 9 May 2012 - Livewire Mobile, Inc., (otcmarkets: LVWR), the one-stop digital content solutions provider for carriers, consumer device manufacturers, media companies, and consumers, and AVG Technologies (NYSE: AVG), the provider of Internet and mobile security to approximately 108 million active users, today launched an initiative in which AVG will provide advanced security checks to apps delivered from Livewire hosted Android app stores for mobile network operators and handset manufacturers.
With concerns increasing around the potential security dangers for smartphone users, the two companies intend to use AVG’s innovative technology to help users protect themselves from potential malware and viruses.
Livewire Mobile has extensive relationships with Android app developers around the world and will host and manage the new app stores on its industry leading Daius digital content platform.
Livewire Mobile, in collaboration with AVG, is now working with its developer community to curate and deliver security-screened app stores for customers around the world. Every app being offered to consumers in Livewire’s app stores will be pre-screened by AVG’s technology. Additionally, once a user downloads an app from one of Livewire’s secure app stores, every app update following the initial download will be similarly screened on the device using AVG’s Mobilation® for Android security solution. Mobilation, will be made available free of charge to every user to complete the process.
“Our platform hosts and manages mobile entertainment services for mobile network operators, handset manufacturers and media companies worldwide,” said Livewire Mobile COO Dave Moreau. “We believe that while Google has made great advances in providing security for Google Play, malware and viruses are still an important challenge for smartphone users worldwide. The solution we have put together with AVG provides an innovative ’clean‘ service for consumers and helps MNOs and handset manufacturers deliver on their duty of care to their subscribers. AVG is a leading provider of internet and mobile security – what better way to protect consumers than providing them with AVG’s powerful technology?”
“The growing use of mobile devices to connect to social networks and entertainment services has made it a preferred method for cyber criminals to spread malware,” said JR Smith, CEO of AVG Technologies. “Our AVG Q1 2012 Community Powered Threat Report indicated a major increase in the use of social networks such as Facebook and Twitter to target Android users – by tricking them into installing malicious apps. In 2011 alone, Google removed more than 100 malicious apps from the official Android market, Google Play. Our joint initiative with Livewire Mobile will help give Android users peace of mind to use their phone apps to safely interact with their favourite social networks and entertainment services.”
AVG and Livewire Mobile are taking part in the Privacy in Mobile Applications Initiative, unveiled last month by the MEF, the global community for mobile content and commerce. The initiative was officially launched at MEF’s inaugural Privacy Summit in Washington DC with the goal to help the global mobile industry build consumer trust when interacting with mobile apps.
