Customers and Partners Leverage Oracle to Drive their Internet of Things Initiatives

Oracle’s Internet of Things Platform is the Cornerstone for Driving New Efficiencies and Business Opportunities

ORACLE OPENWORLD, SAN FRANCISCO – September 25, 2013

News Summary

The proliferation of intelligent devices and the rapid growth of the “Internet of Things” (IoT) movement has created a market for entirely new solutions based on Machine-to-Machine (M2M) technology. As such, organizations need more innovative ways to harness ever-increasing amounts of data and use it to drive smarter decisions, enable new services and business models, and reduce costs. Oracle continues to address these challenges with the latest release of Oracle Java ME Embedded, while also working with its partners to deliver integrated, end-to-end IoT solutions. As a result, customers can create new business opportunities, improve efficiencies, process and analyze in-flight data at lightning speeds, and act on events as quickly as they occur.

News Facts

Partners and customers continue to embrace Oracle platform and Java technologies to power their Internet of Things initiatives, driving innovation and business opportunity.
Oracle’s Internet of Things Platform is the most comprehensive in the market, bringing together leading elements from embedded Java running on sensors and devices to innovative smart gateways that bring middleware out to the edge, and leading infrastructure products.
Furthering customer and partner value, Oracle continues to deliver new innovations at a high pace across the platform, recently announcing Java ME Embedded 3.3, which provides strong support for market-leading embedded chip architectures and new binaries for ARM architecture-based developer boards, including the Raspberry Pi and the Keil STM32 F200 Evaluation Board for ARM Cortex-M processor-based devices. Last week, Oracle also released Java ME Embedded 3.4 adding new advanced development and serviceability features, as well as enhanced support for the Qualcomm QSC 6270T platform.
Providing partners the tools and resources they need to extend business opportunities and differentiate their services in the market around IoT, Oracle PartnerNetwork (OPN) will be launching a Specialization for M2M in the coming quarters. OPN offers enablement resources and Specializations in other IoT-related areas including JavaOracle Database, Oracle Fusion Middleware and more.
Demonstrating the power of Oracle’s Internet of Things platform, coupled with partner solutions and expertise, Oracle, Eurotech, Hitachi Communication Technologies America and Hitachi Consulting are jointly demonstrating the “IoT in Motion – Driving Business Value from Edge Device to Application” solution at JavaOne and Oracle OpenWorld San Francisco 2013. During the conference, attendees are being anonymously counted at various locations. Trend data and analytics of those traffic patterns will be presented during the Oracle OpenWorld keynote “Unlocking Innovation and the Value of Embedded Intelligence on Devices” on Thursday, September 26 from 8:45 a.m.–10:30 a.m. The keynote is taking place in Moscone North, Hall D. Customers and Partners Improving Efficiencies, Business Opportunity with Oracle

Oracle’s customers and partners are leveraging the value of Oracle Java Embedded and Oracle’s Internet of Things platform to drive innovation to their customers.
• Canon: Canon has long embedded Oracle’s database, middleware and Java Platform, Micro Edition (Java ME) capabilities into its multifunction printer office systems and software technologies. For example, the company integrated Oracle’s software, database, Java ME, Oracle WebLogic Server and Oracle SOA Suite capabilities with its imaging systems to create a new imaging platform that’s based on a Service-Oriented Architecture. With the platform, Canon printers and copiers, including imageRUNNER ADVANCE MFPs, can connect to ERP and CRM applications to make document processes more efficient. Canon also utilizes Java ME for its proprietary Multifunctional Embedded Application Platform (MEAP) open-development platform, which enables third-party developers to integrate applications for security, document distribution, etc. with imageRUNNER ADVANCE MFPs.
• Gemalto: Gemalto, a world leader in digital security, is expanding the Internet of Things (IoT) with the launch of the Cinterion® Concept Board for developers. The new development kit simplifies solution design by allowing the vast community of M2M developers to transform original ideas into prototypes in just hours compared to days or weeks with traditional approaches. Leveraging Oracle Java ME Embedded, Gemalto’s unique Cinterion Concept Board will provide potentially over nine million Java developers worldwide with an easy and cost-efficient method to engage in the M2M marketplace. Learn More
• ProSyst: ProSyst Software GmbH (ProSyst) offers middleware for the Internet of Things (IoT) and provides some of the most advanced open standards-based middleware, including OSGi, for connecting and managing devices in the cloud as well as for developing, implementing and updating innovative IoT and M2M applications. Based on Oracle Java SE embedded, ProSyst provides a highly scalable and open platform for gateway-type devices commonly used by service providers and device manufacturers to deploy applications and services and connect the various actors and sensors in local networks. To help ensure this interoperability, ProSyst offers the tools capable of abstracting the hardware and translating the various communication protocols used to connect the “things” in IoT. Once the devices communicate with each other, simple cloud-based use, such as data monitoring, tracking, and aggregation becomes very easy to implement and can be adapted to various use cases and hardware platforms. To enable remote life cycle management and provide software updates, ProSyst also offers an efficient remote management system that is well integrated in Oracle’s powerful Engineered Systems. Together, ProSyst and Oracle enable even the most complex use cases with a comprehensive modular software portfolio that makes it easy to develop, deploy, and service Oracle Java Embedded, M2M, and IoT applications, supported by the world’s most powerful back office systems. Learn more
• V2COM: V2COM is a leading Latin American provider of Smart Grid technologies and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI). V2COM's integrated Smart Grid Solution uses Oracle Java ME Embedded, Oracle Java SE Embedded and other Oracle technologies, including Oracle WebLogic Server, Oracle Utilities Meter Data Management and Oracle Database to manage and connect systems from the device to the data center. Most recently, V2COM’s Oracle-enabled solutions have been the cornerstone of an AMI project at customer Elektro, an Energy Distribution company in Brazil, serving 2.3 million clients and reaching 5.5 million people. The project automated Elektro’s Commercial & Industrial metering process to include intelligent communication modules that connect legacy electronic meters through the public cellular network, and linking them to a common middleware application and Meter Data Management application. With V2COM and Oracle technology and expertise, Elektro was able to deploy 6,000 communication modules in just three months. Two weeks after the initial installation the billing process was completely automated and in the months following, all processes were quickly integrated on the solution. In addition to more efficient day to day operations, the solution delivered the additional ROI of enabling Elektro to detect frauds and field installation problems that were not easily visible before. The metering automation also generated savings by eliminating operational costs of 30 legacy field service units allocated to the meter reading process.
