Fortinet Blog | News and Threat Research Lite Zeus - A New Zeus Variant
The Zeus malware, a.k.a. Zbot, is a bot that is capable of stealing private and sensitive information including personal passwords and banking information from infected hosts. Its command-and-control (C&C) server can also control the action of its remote bots by sending various command strings, such as updating malware, executing other malware files, and so on.
Recently, we have discovered a new variant of this malware that we are calling Lite Zeus. Aside from being shorter with fewer functionalities, it has several other distinct differences when compared with P2P Zeus (GameOver Zeus), such as network communication, encryption/decryption method, and command-and-control mechanism.

“The battle for the Internet of Things has just begun. According to industry research firm IDC, the IoT market is expected to hit $7.1 trillion by 2020,” said John Maddison, vice president of marketing at Fortinet. “The ultimate winners of the IoT connected home will come down to those vendors who can provide a balance of security and privacy vis–vis price and functionality.”
Today we released the results of a global survey that probes home owners about key issues pertaining to the Internet of Things (IoT). Independently administered throughout 11 countries, the survey titled, “Internet of Things: Connected Home,” gives a global perspective about the Internet of Things, what security and privacy issues are in play, and what home owners are willing to do to enable it.

World Cup scams: an early kick-off
It seems that I might have missed a trick, PR-wise. In the run-up – or should that be warm-up? – to the World Cup, it seemed for a while that security bloggers and journalists were falling over themselves to be the first to report soccer-related scams and malware.
And in fact there have been some useful and interesting cup-related posts: I particularly liked World Cup scams: team tactics to keep you safe, in which ESET’s Gastón Charkiewicz offered some handy generic advice with a humorous soccer-it-to-me flavour.

Interactive exploit kit redirection technique
The usual pattern we see when dealing with exploit kits starts with a legitimate website that gets compromised and used to automatically redirect its visitors to the actual malicious content. Techniques such as iFrame injection and HTTP redirections are frequently observed.
This week though, we found an interesting variation while doing research on some exploit kit traffic. We noticed that the compromised website contained code that actually interacts with the user by presenting a fake message about some script slowing down the browser.
