Retailers' heavy handed fraud protection leads to loss of sales

Online retailers battling with fraud prevention are losing out on genuine sales by treating their customers like criminals, according to a new report by ThreatMetrix.
While the cost of online orders lost to fraud is said to be around £2.92 billion, ThreatMetrix says that retailers could be losing out on an ever greater sum by employing fraud protection services that can’t identify genuine customers. According to the report, titled ‘Are You Treating Your Customers Like Criminals’, authentication protocols and password prompts which cause basket abandonment could be as much as ten times more costly than fraud.

Six ways to backup your data

Today is World Backup Day, and it goes without saying that backing up data is a thoroughly sensible thing to routinely get into the habit of doing.
Not only does it make sense in case your laptop is stolen, or your hard disk fails, but it also means that should your computer become infected with ransomware. This is a particularly nasty strain of malware that encrypts your files and threatens to delete them if you don’t pay a ransom within a certain time period. ESET doesn’t recommend giving in to ransomware demands for many reasons both ethical and practical (not least because you mark yourself as a possible target for future attacks), but if your files are all safely backed up, you won’t even feel tempted to negotiate with them in the first place.

11 things you need to know about Microsoft's new Surface 3 - Mar. 31, 2015

Microsoft has unveiled the Surface 3, a thinner, smaller, and less expensive version of its suddenly successful Surface Pro 3 PC-tablet.

The Surface fills a gadget gap between laptops and tablets. Today's tablets are great for portability, reading and watching video, but they're not ideal for doing work. Laptops are designed for getting stuff done, but you wouldn't want to read a book on them. The Surface is a laptop that looks and acts like a tablet.

How tracking devices are keeping Alzheimer's patients safe - Mar. 31, 2015

When someone with Alzheimer's wanders off, it's different from a child or a hiker who goes missing.

People with Alzheimer's don't necessarily want to be found. They won't respond to their name being called, and they'll hide anywhere, from dense woods to locked closets. New tracking technology is helping to make it easier to find those who go missing -- but it's still not perfect.

The First Vector of a Healthcare Cyber Attack - Traditional Attacks and Malware | Fortinet Blog

Recently, I wrote about the three vectors of a healthcare cyber attack. This is the first of a three-part series examining each vector in depth.
Last month, I wrote about the three vectors of a healthcare cyber attack, ironically just before Anthem Blue Cross disclosed a massive data breach. The Anthem breach happened via the first vector, “traditional attacks and malware”, as did the Premera attack, so it’s timely to unpack this particular vector a bit further.

National Health Service in England and Wales Selects IBM to Enhance Electronic Staff Record System

LONDON and ARMONK, N.Y - 26 Mar 2015: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced a contract with the  Department of Health in England to manage and continue transforming the National Health Service Electronic Staff Record system (ESR), the UK’s most important workforce management tool serving 1.4 million employees. IBM will help modernize the system by providing increased mobile access and new self-service capabilities making the system more efficient and accessible.
IBM Interactive Experience, the world's largest digital agency, will design and build a Mobile Ready Portal tailored for many different user types allowing access from PC, Android and iOS devices. The improved interface will give NHS employees easier access to new and existing HR services including mobile, expenses and e-learning. The project will also lay the foundation for future service enhancements including increased central business intelligence reporting using dashboards, alerts and collaboration tools that will help improve performance while helping reduce costs. A critical tool for the National Health Service in England and Wales, the ESR provides payroll, learning and talent management and the centralization of workforce information. It also provides a range of other services covering human resources.

“Improving performance and driving greater efficiencies are major priorities for the national health service today. As demands on the NHS continue to grow, it continues to seek improvements that ensure quality and availability of services for patients" said Simon Humberstone, Head of Healthcare for Europe, IBM Global Business Services. “By introducing technologies that will further enable the NHS to expand its data analytics capabilities, alongside the latest online collaboration and social learning tools, knowledge will be more easily shared, clinical outcomes improved and performance levels increased.”

The five year agreement was signed in December 2014 following a competitive tender. Following the transition from the current supplier, IBM, in partnership with the NHS ESR Central Team will manage and run the service beginning later this year.

IBM Master the Mainframe Contest Draws Record Participation, Announces Winners

10-year-old global contest is a training ground for the next generation of IT pros
Armonk, N.Y. - 24 Mar 2015: IBM (NYSE: IBMtoday announced a record 8,100 high school and college students around the world competed in IBM’s 2014 Master the Mainframe contest, helping equip the IT leaders of tomorrow with the skills needed for the mobile economy.
Hosted at high schools and colleges around the world, Master the Mainframe – part of the IBM’sAcademic Initiative – serves as an introduction to programming and application development and requires no previous mainframe experience. These programming skills are becoming increasingly important with the explosive growth in mobile transactions, creating even greater demands on company IT systems to quickly and reliably interact with consumers.
“We’re proud of the winners and all the Master the Mainframe participants,” said Ross Mauri, general manager, IBM z Systems. “These bright young minds represent the future of the mainframe as it continues to evolve to handle the unprecedented demands of the increasingly mobile, data-intensive world. By taking up these skills, students are ensuring a strong future for enterprise computing and for themselves in the job market.”
As students complete each part of the Master the Mainframe contest, judges evaluate their results and reward those who move on to the next step. Each phase becomes more difficult, beginning with basic mainframe navigation to finishing a project that tackles a real-world business scenario.
This year's contest drew the largest turnout since the contest’s inception in 2005. “Master the Mainframe” started in the United States and Canada but has expanded to almost 40 countries on six continents.  A total of 74,000 students worldwide have competed in the past 10 years. In 2016, the contest will holds its second World Championship, crowning global winners.
IBM announced this year’s U.S. and Canada winners among nearly 5,000 North American contestants:
First Place: Kevin Matesi, Northern Illinois University
Kevin is a second-year graduate student at Northern Illinois University and plans to graduate in May. His areas of focus are enterprise computing and databases, and he is searching for a career that affords him the opportunity to work with mainframes and/or databases.
Second Place: Joseph Bloom, Deerfield (Illinois) High School
Joseph is a senior at Deerfield High School. Next year, he plans to study computer science at a university to be determined. When he’s not at a computer, he plays trombone in the school band.
Third Place: Jeremy Krach, University of Maryland
Jeremy is a sophomore in computer science at the University of Maryland and is a member of the nation’s first cybersecurity honors college, Advanced Cybersecurity Experience for Students. Upon graduating in 2017, he plans a career in software engineering and cybersecurity.
Fourth Place: Hongzhe (Henry) Liu, Algonquin (Massachusetts) Regional High School
Henry will graduate in 2016 and plans on studying artificial intelligence in college.
Fifth Place: Steven Hoover, Syracuse University
Steven is a graduate student studying information management at Syracuse University’s School of Information Studies.
The winners will receive a new tablet computer and an expenses-paid trip to New York for a March 24 awards ceremony and tour of IBM labs in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. IBM guest speakers at the ceremony will include Ross Mauri, general manager, IBM z Systems, and Maria Boonie, vice president, IBM z Systems Operating Systems & Firmware Development.
Master the Mainframe marks its 10th year at a time when the IBM mainframe remains a linchpin of enterprise computing, relied on by 92 of the top 100 worldwide banks[1], every one of the 10 largest insurers, 23 of the largest 25 airlines and six of the 10 top global retailers. [2]
In March, IBM began shipping the z13, the most powerful and secure mainframe to date, designed to work at unprecedented scale to handle the growth in mobile transactions. One z13 can perform 30,000 transactions per second or 2.5 billion transactions per day.

IMD Business School and Cisco Join Forces on Digital Business Transformation

From Cisco:

PRESS RELEASE

IMD Business School and Cisco Join Forces on Digital Business Transformation

Cisco will make a contribution to IMD valued at $US 10 million to develop thought leadership and address business challenges in digital transformation

LAUSANNE/SAN JOSE (26 MARCH 2015)—IMD, the top-ranked business school focused on executive education, announced today a contribution valued at $US 10 million from Cisco to become the world leading destination for research, innovation and leadership to drive digital transformation to all aspects of enterprises, in every industry.
Cisco intends to fund the Cisco Chair in Digital Business Transformation and create the IMD/Cisco Global Center for Digital Business Transformation, to be located on IMD's campus in Lausanne, Switzerland, and fully operational by summer 2015.
The collaboration will combine Cisco's leadership in providing technology solutions for the Internet of Everything (IoE) with IMD's expertise in developing global leaders. According to Gartner Research, by 2020, 75 percent of businesses will be a digital business or will be preparing to become one, yet only 30 percent of these efforts will be successful due to lack of talent and technical expertise. Gartner reveals the number one reason companies fail in digital transformation efforts is a failure to re-imagine and reinvent the business from top to bottom before they begin.
The partnership between Cisco and IMD will combine original research and Cisco Consulting's open innovation approach in order to generate practical insights that executives can apply directly to their businesses. By conducting original research, the Global Center for Digital Business Transformation will work to define digital business transformation, what it means for companies today, and how to stay relevant in today's competitive marketplace.
The Global Center aims to become a world-leading hub of research and innovation, helping executives take advantage of digital opportunities and neutralize digital threats. Employing full-time researchers from both IMD and Cisco, the Center will produce cutting-edge thought leadership and organize learning events. It will also collaborate with Cisco's existing network of innovation centers around the world.

QUOTES
Dominique Turpin, IMD President
"IMD has had an excellent relationship with Cisco and its top executives for many years. We are extremely grateful to Cisco for funding this new initiative so generously, and are excited about the research to come. I would like to thank Cisco's leaders for the trust they have put in IMD, particularly Thierry Maupilé, an IMD MBA alumnus and Head of the Strategic Ecosystem Group at Cisco, for his crucial role in making this happen."
Michael Wade, Professor of Innovation and Strategic Information Management at IMD
"This new Global Center will operate at the intersection of technology and organizations. Its main goal is to help executives who are struggling with the ‘how' of digital business transformation. These executives know that they must change and adapt to digital opportunities and threats, but they don't know how."
Edzard Overbeek, Senior Vice President, Cisco Services
"We are excited to be partnering with IMD, the prestigious school of business management, which attracts thousands of executives to its campus each year.  IMD stands out among the top global business schools because of its unique applied model of management education, which will be instrumental as we seek to help our customers manage through rapid market changes due to digitization.  Together, Cisco and IMD will ‘write the book' on managing transformation in the new digital age."
Stephan Strauss, Division President, DB Schenker, Germany
"As a business leader in a traditional industry who needs to take his company on the journey of digital transformation, it is a challenge to take the best route.  How to leverage digital technologies to create sustainable competitive advantage? In which way transform our business model and what should be the focus? How can we transform our culture and take our organization with us on that journey? What is the right pace?  The IMD/Cisco Global Center for Digital Business Transformation will be a most valuable asset to work on addressing these challenges."
Frank Vivier, Richemont Group Director of eBusiness, Switzerland
Thomas Lindemann, Richemont Group HR Director, Switzerland
"Richemont (the owner of several luxury brands, including Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Piaget, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Montblanc, etc) congratulates IMD on its new Global Research Center on Digital Business Transformation.  The digitization of the luxury goods industry worldwide is presenting significant change management challenges and opportunities.  IMD's digital research and education initiative will provide a very timely contribution to the development of organizational competencies and leadership skills to both local and global luxury groups, thus benefitting the industry's competitiveness and growth."
Tom Touchet, CEO, Smart City Media, USA
We are in a period of prolific and profound change, driven by digital disruption and accelerated by the Internet of Things. That opportunity is the focus of virtually all business leaders. Understanding and leveraging and leveraging the impact of these new business models and their competitive dynamics is instrumental to our success. The creation of the Cisco-IMD Global Center for Digital Business Transformation, which is dedicated to tackling these issues, and to creating roadmaps for organizational change, is an important step towards this goal.
Aparna M. Dogra, Temasek Management Services Pte Ltd, Singapore
We are very excited to hear about the new IMD-Cisco partnered research centre on Global Digital Transformation. Forward looking companies that invest in new technologies and embrace digitally driven processes and business models are better positioned to compete in the fast paced digital age. We are confident that the cutting edge research coming out of the IMD-Cisco Research Centre will serve companies well in making such investment decisions and transformational changes to ensure that their businesses stay relevant and competitive.

From Cisco:

PRESS RELEASE

Telefonica Deploys Cisco ASR Series Routers for Converged Metro Ethernet Network and IP Backhaul

- New Network Optimized for High-Speed Mobile Internet

SAN JOSE, California, March 26, 2015 – Cisco announced today that Telefonica, one of the largest providers of communications services in Latin America, has deployed the Cisco ASR 9000 (aggregation router), ASR 901 and ASR 903, as part of its Evolved Programmable Network (EPN) to deliver enhanced high-speed mobile backhaul services. The Cisco® ASR 901 and ASR 903 will provide cell-site backhaul services and better enable mobile operators to support data-intensive services required by consumers and businesses.
Cisco's technology, services and experience in helping network operators scale services to meet the demands of mobile customers were significant reasons Telefonica chose it for this deployment. According to the Cisco Visual Networking Index™ (VNI), by 2018 there will be more than 10 billion mobile-ready devices and connections, about 3 billion more than there were in 2013, and the global mobile Internet data traffic will increase 18-fold over the next five years. Mobile operators require robust cell-site backhaul services to accommodate this growth in mobile traffic and facilitate delivery of new mobile services, applications and experiences.
Cisco has the most comprehensive mobile backhaul solution in the industry, including cell site routers, self-optimizing technology for both licensed and unlicensed spectrum (small cell and macro cell), and small cells, including Wi-Fi.
The Cisco ASR 9000 series routers will help Telefonica address growth through a converged infrastructure that optimizes service delivery with flexibility, robust IPv6 support, and Carrier Ethernet capabilities.
The platform's use of the Cisco IOS XR modular software operating system will simplify the company's network operations and enable seamless system redundancy and network resiliency.
LATAM continues to be a growth engine for Telefonica. Telefonica deployed ASR 9000 and ASR 903 in Brazil, and ASR 9000 in Argentina and Chile to provide metro and backhaul services. In addition, Telefonica has chosen Cisco to deploy the ASR9000, ASR 901 and ASR 903 to support LTE backhaul services in Mexico. Telefonica was also the first mobile operator to deploy 4G networks in Colombia.
Highlights/Key Facts
  • The Cisco ASR 9000 Series is specifically designed to give network operators flexibility to offer new services by providing a strong foundation for services such as 4G mobile Internet, business-class Ethernet, and residential video and broadband.
  • With industry-leading 100GE capacity, and network programmability via NETCONF/YANG, the ASR 9000 ensures that Telefonica has the scale and flexibility for future requirements.
  • Mobile backhaul represents one of the fastest-growing services for Telefonica. This capability will be rolled out extensively in the markets across Latin America over the next few months.
  • In addition to 4G mobile backhaul, the new Carrier Ethernet network will enable additional broadband capacity as it continues to deliver faster broadband speeds in recently acquired markets.
  • The Cisco Visual Networking Index (VNI) Forecast, 2014-2018, global Internet traffic will reach an annual run rate of 1.6 zettabyes.
