Instagram is Bigger Than Twitter - Hits 400 Million

Surpassing Twitter by more than 80 million users, Instagram announced it now has a community of more than 400 million around the world. This means that Instagram is bigger than Twitter.
Going from one million users in December 2010 to 400 million in 2015 represents meteoric growth no matter how you gauge it. And the one billion dollars Facebook paid when it only had 30 million users in 2012 has proven to be a great investment.

Detour Ahead...Please Engage Brain | Fortinet Blog

It was a morning like lots of others...I was headed to the airport for a week in our home office, so I got an early start, checked on the sheep on the way out (yes, sheep), and got on the road. Aside from being ridiculously early, the ride was uneventful until I got to my exit for the Mass Pike. That's I-90 for those of you outside Massachusetts and, when traffic is good (like at 4:30 in the morning), it's the fastest, easiest way to the airport. And the exit was closed. Well darn.

Viruses, bulletins, surveys, and gender: hashtag #VB2015

Mention “Virus Bulletin” to someone who doesn’t happen to be in the information security business, like the Lyft driver who took me to the airport a few days ago, and you realize it can sound like an odd name for an information security conference. However, if you’ve been going to Virus Bulletin for a while – my first time speaking at “VB” was in 1994 – it sounds entirely normal. You know that the name comes from a printed bulletin about developments in the world of computer viruses that first appeared in 1989, mailed by post from Oxfordshire in England. You also know that Virus Bulletin is an excellent conference, one in which serious research is front and center, surrounded by ample opportunities to network with fellow combatants in the fight against malicious code and other cyber-badness.
Virus Bulletin 2015, taking place this week in Prague, is shaping up to be the largest VB yet, and if you’re a regular reader of We Live Security you already know that quite a few folks from ESET are on the conference agenda (thanks to the gracious efforts of my British colleague, David Harley, particularly gracious since he is not actually going to VB this year, taking a break after presenting more than a dozen VB papers since 1997).

Dell Launches Industry First Recycled Carbon Fiber, Advances Circular Economy Model for IT Industry | Dell

Dell today announced additional progress against its circular economy initiatives, including the expansion of its closed-loop recycled plastic supply chain, introduction of reclaimed carbon-fiber source materials and new industry collaborations to advance global circular practices. In an industry first, Dell has partnered with supplier SABIC to recycle excess carbon fiber and scrap raw materials into new Dell products beginning in late 2015. Initially, select Latitude and Alienware products will contain recycled carbon fiber, with plans to expand across these two product portfolios in 2016. Dell estimates that by partnering with SABIC, it will prevent 820,000 pounds of carbon fiber from ending up in landfills. The recycled carbon fiber materials have an approximately 11 percent smaller carbon footprint than simply using virgin carbon fiber.

Virus Bulletin 2015

At this time of year I’m usually getting ready to travel to Virus Bulletin, maybe the year’s most important conference for an anti-malware researcher. Sadly, for the second year running I’m unable to attend, though it would have been nice to see Prague again – the conference is at the Clarion Congress Hotel – and the networking with other researchers is always an attraction. It’s also something of a milestone in that for the first time since 2007, I don’t have a paper to present there. But maybe 15 VB papers since 1997 is enough for one lifetime. :)
The agenda looks as good as ever, though, with a keynote from Ross Anderson to kick things off.

DHS working on ‘self-destructing’ security chip for smartphones

The Department for Homeland Security (DHS) in the US has revealed that it is working with the Boeing Company to develop a so-called “brain chip” that would allow any smartphone to “self-destruct”.
In theory, this technology will provide users with additional, “intelligent” security, so that if their smartphone is stolen or lost, the device will intuitively implement self-protective measures.

Virus Bulletin small talk: Diversity in tech

Hardly a week goes by anymore between posts about the impending doom that will be brought about by a lack of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) workers, particularly in the US. There are many who feel that the shortage is a myth. If you drill down further into different STEM disciplines, and into different specific demographics, the picture gets even more complex.

Why parents must teach their children about internet security

Parenting, as we know it, is evolving in this modern, digital age.
Mothers and fathers have traditionally warned their sons and daughters of the physical dangers they face, be that pickpockets on the street or strangers in the park. Today, however, parents are facing an altogether different challenge – keeping their children safe on the world wide web.

Closing The Gap On Mobile Security For SMBs | Fortinet Blog

Not surprisingly, mobile security ranks among the top challenges IT faces when it comes to protecting small and mid-sized businesses. What is surprising, however, is that only 16% of SMBs worldwide responding to a recent Techaisle survey say they’re prepared to deal with mobile security challenges. For some small businesses, this is constraining mobile adoption; for others, it's creating concerning security gaps. However, it also creates an opportunity for channel partners to step in and become trusted advisors.
Right now, many MSPs and VARs continue to focus customers on backup and disaster recovery, along with endpoint security, since they tend to be simple point solutions for the SMB market. While important, they don't get at the breadth and depth of the security challenges SMBs encounter.

The evolution of ransomware: From PC Cyborg to a service for sale

Without a doubt, malware is – and has always been – one of the main threats to IT. Over the years, it has become one of the primary causes of security incidents, from the early years with viruses, to more sophisticated and relatively high-impact threats such as ransomware.
Similarly, the reasons for developing and distributing malicious code have changed over time from testing a system’s functionality in order to gain recognition for the malware’s creators, to reaping some kind of benefit – mainly financial profit – in an increasingly quicker timeframe.

The Trojan Games: Odlanor malware cheats at poker

Whenever ESET malware researchers discover a new interesting attack, a new piece of malware, or an old threat evolving in an interesting way, we share the news on this blog. Every once in a while, though, we stumble upon something that stands out, something that doesn’t fall into the “common” malware categories that we encounter every day – such as ransomware, banking trojans, or targeted attacks (APTs) – just to name a few of those that are currently causing the most problems. Today, we’re bringing you one of those uncommon threats – a trojan devised to target players of online poker.
The last time I wrote about poker-related malware, it was about PokerAgent, a trojan propagating through Facebook that was used to steal Facebook users’ logon credentials, credit card information and the level of Zynga poker credit.

IBM Acquires StrongLoop to Extend Enterprise Reach using IBM Cloud

IBM #News Release:

IBM Acquires StrongLoop to Extend Enterprise Reach using IBM Cloud

Offers Fast Path for Developers to Rapidly Build and Deliver APIs for Mobile, Internet of Things and Web Applications
ARMONK, N.Y. - 10 Sep 2015: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced the acquisition of StrongLoop, Inc., a software provider, to help developers connect enterprise applications tomobile, Internet of Things (IoT) and web applications in the cloud.
StrongLoop is a leading provider of popular application development software -- known as enterprise Node.js -- that enables software developers to build applications using APIs (application programming interfaces).
APIs are pieces of software that act as technology glue for integrating applications, data and business processes that connect businesses with customers, partners and employees.
As data becomes increasingly critical in cloud environments, developers are using APIs to create protocols and routines that specify how one application can interact with another application. For example, developers can create new information assets by combining data and services shared by other organizations, ranging from startups to global enterprises, to deliver new innovation and business value.
IBM intends to integrate Node.js capabilities from StrongLoop with its software portfolio, which already includes MobileFirst and WebSphere®, to help clients better use enterprise data and conduct transactions whether in the cloud or on-premises. These new capabilities will enable clients and developers to build scalable APIs, and to more easily connect existing back-end, enterprise processes with front-end mobile, IoT and web apps in an open, hybrid cloud. Node.js is one of the fastest growing development frameworks for creating and delivering APIs.
“Enterprises are focused on digital transformation to reach new channels, tap new business models, and personalize their engagement with clients,” said Marie Wieck, general manager, Middleware, IBM Systems. “APIs are a critical ingredient. By bringing together StrongLoop’s Node.js capabilities to rapidly create APIs with IBM’s leadership in Java and API Management on our cloud platform, we are unlocking the innovation potential of two vibrant development communities.”
Fast and Easy Enterprise Development in the Cloud
Starting today with this acquisition, Node.js developers now have a richer, operating environment on IBM Bluemix™, IBM’s platform-as-a-service. JavaScript ranked as the #1 language for discussion and usage followed closely by Java (1). Java remains the leading language for web applications and transaction systems. Combining StrongLoop’s tools and services with IBM’s WebSphere and Java capabilities, IBM will help clients bridge Java and Node.js development platforms, which can enable clients to extract greater value from their application investments.
Through integration on IBM Bluemix, these Java and Node.js communities will also have access today to many other IBM and third-party services including access to Mobile Services, data analytics and Watson.
“With this acquisition, the industry benefits from Node.js’ formal entry into the mainstream enterprise,” said Juan Carlos Soto, Chief Executive Officer, StrongLoop. “As leaders in the Node.js open community, we plan to further advance open, community-driven innovation coupled with global, enterprise class software and services offerings to grow client value in the API economy.”
One company that has realized value through Node.js is GoDaddy, which uses StrongLoop LoopBack Framework to create APIs for domain name creation through its partner network.
"Node.js has been a strategic technology and key to innovating at GoDaddy,” said Elissa Murphy, Chief Technology Officer at GoDaddy. "With partners like StrongLoop, the Node.js community has enabled us to develop and deliver world-class products. StrongLoop helped accelerate our reseller program, driving growth for our partners.”
Commitment to Open Source Communities
IBM’s acquisition of StrongLoop continues its commitment to open source technologies and communities including Apache, Eclipse, OpenStack, Cloud Foundry and many others.
As a founding member and Platinum member of Node.js Foundation, IBM has dedicated experts working within the foundation. IBM will continue to provide support and investment in the open Node developer community.
New Services at IBM Bluemix Garage
Developers will also benefit from IBM Cloud and developer experts who provide technical guidance on creating, managing and monetizing APIs using StrongLoop at IBM Bluemix Garages.
StrongLoop added to IBM IoT Platform
Select cloud capabilities from today’s StrongLoop acquisition are expected to be incorporated into the IBM IoT Foundation, along with Bluemix, IBM’s platform-as-a-service, security and analytics to provide enterprises access to a powerful IoT platform that derives insight from sensor-driven data.
IBM intends to provide global support for the StrongLoop platform by 2H16, adding language translation support for Chinese (simplified and traditional), Japanese, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese.
Financial terms and conditions were not released.
About StrongLoop
Founded in 2013 and based in San Mateo, CA, StrongLoop is a provider of enterprise Node.js capabilities in the development of Systems of Engagement applications. StrongLoop is a key contributor to the Node community and maintains over 160 modules for the Node community within Node Package Manager.

Teva Pharmaceuticals and IBM Partner to Build Global e-Health Solutions on the IBM Watson Health Cloud

Collaboration Plans to Commercialize Solutions for Deployment Worldwide
Jerusalem and Cambridge, Mass. - 10 Sep 2015: IBM (NYSE: IBMWatson Health and Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (NYSE and TASE: TEVA) today announced that Teva has been selected as its first Foundational Life Sciences Partner for the Watson Health Cloud. As part of this new strategic partnership, Teva becomes the first global pharmaceutical company to tap the power of the Watson Health Cloud to benefit patients and healthcare providers across geographies.
Teva has chosen the IBM Watson Health Cloud as a preferred global technology platform and aims to build solutions designed to help millions of individuals worldwide with complex and chronic conditions such as asthma, pain, migraine and neurodegenerative diseases. In addition, a joint Teva-IBM Research team will deploy Big Data and machine learning technology to create disease models and advanced therapeutic solutions.
“Teva is actively exploring the e-health evolution with a strong focus on fulfilling unmet and emerging patients' needs. The IBM Watson Health Cloud provides a strong foundation on which we can realize this vision,” said Guy Hadari, SVP and CIO for Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. “By building on the Watson Health Cloud, we believe Teva will be in a unique position to put the best information and insights in the hands of physicians, care teams and patients, to empower treatment optimization for individuals and populations across the spectrum of acute and chronic conditions. Watson holds promise to provide Teva with better insights, real-time feedback and options for clinicians to consider to improve patient care.”
Watson is a groundbreaking cognitive computing platform that represents a new era of computing based on its ability to interact in natural language, process vast amounts of Big Data to uncover patterns and insights, and learn from each interaction. The Watson Health Cloud provides an open development platform for physicians, researchers, insurers and companies focused on creating health and wellness solutions.
Teva will work with IBM on long-range platform and solutions development, with experts collaborating to enhance IBM Watson Health Cloud capabilities and explore synergies with existing Watson Health ecosystem partners. The company, which has one of the world’s largest portfolios of medicines, expects to develop solutions designed to collect and analyze real world evidence, draw powerful insights and inform a variety of initiatives such as reducing drug misuse or increasing prescribed medication adherence.
“Teva’s pioneering digital health vision, reach across global markets, extensive portfolio of medicines and significant industry experience make them a preferred life science ecosystem partner for the Watson Health Cloud,” said Mike Rhodin, senior vice president, IBM Watson.
IBM’s Global Business Services will work closely with a Teva Analytics team to assess the data and the analytics model requirements for the Real World Evidence e-health solution.
IBM Watson: Pioneering a New Era of Computing
Watson is the first commercially available cognitive computing capability representing a new era in computing. The system, delivered through the cloud, analyzes high volumes of data and complex questions posed in natural language and proposes evidence-based answers. Watson is continuously gaining in value and knowledge over time, from previous interactions.
In January 2014, IBM launched the IBM Watson unit, a business dedicated to developing and commercializing cloud-delivered cognitive computing technologies. The move signified a strategic shift by IBM to deliver a new class of software, services and apps that improves by learning, and discovers insights from massive amounts of Big Data.  As part of the unit, the company has increased the number and diversity of cognitive computing services delivered to its partners, adding new beta Watson services in February 2015, and scalable deep learning APIs with the acquisition of AlchemyAPI in March 2015.
In April 2015, the company continued to build on its strengths in cognitive computing, analytics, security and cloud with the launch of IBM Watson Health and the Watson Health Cloud platform.  The new unit will help improve the ability of doctors, researchers and insurers to innovate by surfacing new insights from the massive amount of personal health data being created daily.  The Watson Health Cloud allows this information to be anonymized, shared and combined with a dynamic and constantly growing aggregated view of clinical, research and social health data that clients choose to share.
