MTV is Bringing Back the 90s With New Network (Watch)

Throwbacks are all the rage right now. And that’s what MTV is banking on with the launch of its new network, MTV Classic. The new network will play nothing but reruns of popular MTV shows from the 90s and early 2000s, like Beavis and Butthead, Daria, Total Request Live, MTV Unplugged and Laguna Beach.
And MTV isn’t the only company using nostalgia to get people’s attention. Nickelodeon also has a network dedicated to older shows. And Pokemon Go likely wouldn’t have been as popular without nearly 20 years of the Pokemon brand behind it.

The Data Protection Dustbin: Safely Disposing of Personal Data

recent article by Kevin Townsend picks up on a report by Blancco Technology Group suggesting that ‘78% of second-hand hard drives purchased from eBay and Craigslist now contain recoverable corporate or personal information’. Blancco’s conclusions are based on the examination of 200 randomly selected drives they bought and examined in the first three months of 2016. Blancco’s business is the certified destruction of data and the management of reused computers and devices, so the company’s interest in the issue is unsurprising. It’s not surprising, either, that it was easily able to recover data that the owners believed to have been erased. In fact, 40% of the drives were apparently erased by quick format, which leaves data easily recoverable, and 36% seemed to have been deleted by simply using the recycle bin or delete button.

2016 is already being dubbed “The Year of Ransomware” and ransomware features prominently in my upcoming “Mid-Year Threat Review” webinar. In that webinar I will also be talking about the IoT (Internet of Things) and more specifically the IoIT (the Internet of Insecure Things); mainly because risks arising from the latter are on the rise. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that the IoIT currently poses as big a threat as ransomware does. But part of my job is to look beyond the present – and I’m concerned that a future headline will read: “The Year of Jackware.”

What is a Chatbot and How Can I Use It For Business?

Solutions - 15dB Gain Block Delivers 47dBm OIP3 Linearity with Low Noise from 100kHz to 1.4GHz

MILPITAS, CA – July 21, 2016 – Linear Technology announces the LTC6433-15, a wideband 15dB gain block amplifier offering outstanding linearity of 47dBm OIP3 (output third order intercept) and 3.22dB noise figure at 150MHz. The amplifier has excellent OP1dB (output 1dB compression point) of 19.2dBm. The LTC6433-15 is uniquely different from other gain block amplifiers that are typically built using GaAs or pHEMT processes. These FET technologies have high 1/f noise corners on the order of 20MHz to 30MHz, so are prone to high noise floor rise, which renders them unusable at low frequencies. In contrast, the LTC6433-15 amplifier core is built using high frequency SiGe bipolar technology. As a result, the amplifier exhibits much lower 1/f noise corner, typically below 10kHz, making it usable at low frequencies to 100kHz without significant noise rise. Moreover, the performance of GaAs and pHEMT type devices is highly dependent on their internal FET bias voltage, which can vary widely from part to part. Not so with the LTC6433-15, whose performance is stable over temperature and from device to device, and is insensitive to power supply voltage variations.

Dell Survey Reveals new Security Insights on Enabling Digital Transformation | Dell

Dell today announced results of a global Digital Transformation Security Survey that shows digital transformation is a fast-growing reality in business. Results reveal that security often is seen as a barrier to digital transformation, therefore brought into the process too late to make a meaningful impact. However, respondents recognized that security teams can serve as enablers in helping the business adopt digital technologies when included early in the planning process. Ninety-seven percent of respondents say they are investing in digital technologies including mobile, cloud applications, cloud infrastructures and IoT. While only 18 percent say security has been involved in all of their digital transformation initiatives, 85 percent say that if security teams are included earlier in the project ‒ and many admit they currently are not ‒ security can better enable those initiatives.

Malicious scripts gaining prevalence in Brazil

Had we looked at a map of malware detections in Brazil a year ago, we would have seen that the two main computer threats were the downloaders that installed banking trojans, and the banking trojans themselves. Today the situation remains the same, but with an extra special ingredient: while threats used to be Windows .exe files, today there are also Java .jar files, as well as Visual Basic Script and JavaScript among the top 10 threats.
To understand this change in the platforms used by cybercriminals, we will, in this article, analyze both a JavaScript and a Java threat.

Firefighting, security and compliance

FireMon conducted a survey at Infosec Europe this year and apparently discovered that cybersecurity professionals manage to be both overworked and underutilized. That’s a feeling which I’ve been quite familiar with myself from time to time over the years, but I was a little surprised that the article cited above was entitled ‘Tired of fighting fires instead of doing real security work?’. As someone who has enjoyed (well, sometimes) several decades in firefighting and security, I’m not altogether convinced that firefighting and ‘real’ security are separate issues.

Flashback Friday: The Melissa virus

The year was 1999. The month March. There was already lots of talk about the Y2K bug, budgets being allocated to computer and software updates, bunkers being prepared for the end of the world. Meanwhile, for many, it was business as usual. You still have to go to work. Pay the bills. Buy groceries.
For David L. Smith, however, things were less routine. The American, hitherto unknown to many, was preoccupied with what would be his most and only infamous creation. Eventually, on or around 26th, he let loose the Melissa virus (officially known as W97M/Melissa.A@mm).
