RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC
"We know from experience that students are our toughest customers – literally – and for that reason we make it a point to go above and beyond our standard ruggedness features in the laptops we introduce for education..."
Lenovo (HKSE: 992) (ADR: LNVGY) today announced the ThinkPad X131e laptop, built especially for students with the technologies to enhance classroom learning along with a rugged design to meet the physical demands of the school day and beyond. The ThinkPad X131e offers choices of Intel® Core™ and Celeron® processors or AMD E-Series Accelerated Processing Units (APUs) for strong performance, Dolby®Advanced Audio® for rich and resonant sound, vibrant HD graphics and USB 3.0 for fast data transfers.  The PC’s cover displays a wireless activity LED indicator so teachers know when students are using WiFi in the classroom. Built for the rigors of education, the laptop also includes customization and security options for schools’ IT teams.
“We know from experience that students are our toughest customers – literally – and for that reason we make it a point to go above and beyond our standard ruggedness features in the laptops we introduce for education,” said Dilip Bhatia, vice president, ThinkPad Business Unit, Lenovo. “To help combat the extreme wear and tear students subject their laptops to, we’ve designed our toughest education PC yet by incorporating heavy-duty, military-grade features, while packing the device with top of the line technology so teachers can offer students the latest in digital learning.”
Student-Tested, Teacher-Approved
The powerful ThinkPad X131e can handle a variety of student assignments, from working with video and creating presentations to managing data and other word processing tasks. The 11.6-inch laptop includes choices of dual core AMD E-300 and E2-1800 APUs with AMD Radeon™ graphics or Intel® Core™ i3-2367M and Intel® Celeron® 877 processors with Intel® HD Graphics; all help to deliver multimedia-rich lessons. ThinkPad X131e PCs equipped with Intel processors also offer the option of including Intel® Learning Series Software Suite, a collaborative and user-friendly tool designed for one-to-one eLearning and classrooms around the world.
The convenient LED light on the laptop’s cover shows wireless activity to give teachers a quick visual cue that students are connected to the Internet for lessons requiring connectivity -- and offline when the work calls for simple word processing or other local activity. This convenient aid to teachers helps keep students following along with the lesson.
The laptop’s Dolby® Advanced Audio® boosts the performance of the built-in speakers and enhances classroom learning that includes music, video and games. Additional multimedia functions include a low-light webcam and Lenovo’s Instant Resume function, allowing students to maintain a WiFi connection while moving from class to class.
Kid-proofed Design
Lenovo built the ThinkPad X131e for mobility throughout the school day with its lightweight design, less than four pounds,[1] and with long battery life, up to 8.5 hours.[2] Student-tested, heavy-duty features include:
  • Reinforced hinges:because frequent opening and closing of laptops can accelerate wear and tear, the X131e has a reinforced hinge to withstand 50,000 open/close cycles.
  • Stainless steel hinge brackets:helping the laptop absorb 150 percent more force to the cover.[3]
  • Tightly aligned keyboard:prevents objects like pencils from wedging under keyboard keys.
  • Dustless fan:filters dust away from the fan assembly to extend the life of the fan.
  • Strengthened AC adapter cable:designed to withstand frequent plugging and unplugging of the laptop.
  • Enhanced HDD shock performance:protects against damage from students by incorporating rubber padding around the hard drive.
The ThinkPad X131e also meets the needs of IT teams with its range of optional services including asset tagging for inventory control, ThinkPad Warranty Upgrades with onsite repair to provide tech help at school and ThinkPad Accidental Damage Protection which turns expensive out-of-warranty repairs into predictable, managed expenses.
The X131e comes in custom colors[4] and the school can opt to have its logo etched into the top cover.
Pricing and Availability[5]
The ThinkPad X131e laptop will be available starting today from business partners and onwww.lenovo.com. Pricing for models starts at $499

SAO PAULO, Brazil
"The Itu center will give Lenovo even better end-to-end control of our Brazil business, enabling greater speed in delivering the right products to every large organization, small business and consumer in the country, with industry leading value and the most responsive delivery and services..."
SAO PAULO, Brazil (July 5, 2012) – Lenovo (HKSE: 992) (ADR: LNVGY) the world’s second largest PC company, announced today that it will invest US $30 million to build a new manufacturing and distribution center in Itu, Sao Paulo, Brazil that will produce and deliver a full range of commercial and consumer PCs for its customers in Brazil.  The new 325,000 square foot facility, scheduled to begin operations in December 2012, is likely to employ as many as 700 workers when it reaches full capacity within two years, and it will establish a more integrated business model in Brazil while extending the Company’s overall commitment to its customers there.

Lenovo has been the world’s fastest growing major PC company for 10 consecutive quarters, and aims to build on this success by aggressively expanding its business in Brazil, the world’s third largest PC market in 2011.

“Today’s announcement represents the first step in a bold, long-term plan that will encompass both organic and inorganic growth strategies, with a goal to more than double our market share in Brazil,” said Dan Stone, Lenovo vice president and newly appointed country general manager in Brazil.  “This new, state-of-the-art manufacturing and distribution center will give us the greater flexibility and efficiency needed to deliver a full range of exceptional and competitively priced personal computing products to a wider range of customers.  It will position Lenovo to grow faster than the overall market in Brazil and match our successful track record around the world.”

“The Itu center will give Lenovo even better end-to-end control of our Brazil business, enabling greater speed in delivering the right products to every large organization, small business and consumer in the country, with industry leading value and the most responsive delivery and services,” added Gerry Smith, senior vice president, Global Supply Chain & Global Services, Lenovo.

The Itu, Sao Paulo manufacturing and distribution center will produce and deliver a full range of notebook and desktop systems for both commercial and consumer markets.  The facility will enable the company to significantly expand its product portfolio in Brazil while strengthening price competitiveness, and shortening order delivery times for customers there.  It will further extend Lenovo’s efficient global manufacturing network, which leverages a hybrid mix of in-house, end-to-end factories and outsourcing partners to meet the needs of customers in over 160 countries.

Lenovo Launches Innovative Smart TV Across China

News release:

Lenovo Launches Innovative Smart TV Across China

World's First Smart TV with Android 4.0, New Qualcomm Processor
Demonstrates Lenovo's PC-Plus Strategy
May 8, 2012—Lenovo Group launched the K-series Lenovo Smart TV products for the China market at a press conference in Beijing today. With today's announcement, Lenovo is now offering products across all four screens -- personal computer, tablet, smart phone and smart TV -- that define the company's long-term "PC-Plus" strategy.

Lenovo believes that the PC industry has entered the PC-Plus era, characterized by the emergence of a variety of new devices. Smart TVs, tablets and smart phones all have the same computing, storage and network communication capabilities of a PC, offering a wide variety of features and apps based on the Internet. In the mean time, PC itself will also be continuously adapted and innovated.

"While we continue to strengthen our position in the PC industry, we are also further expanding into the field of Internet devices, with innovative smart phones and tablets, and today, smart TVs," said Yang Yuanqing, Lenovo Group Chairman and CEO. "As a global leader in the PC industry, our customers look to us to provide new technologies, and as we drive further into the PC-Plus era, we will continue to introduce new products worldwide. The PC-Plus era is a great opportunity for our customers and Lenovo intends to remain out in front, leading as always with exciting new products."

Liu Jun, Lenovo Senior Vice President and Mobile Internet Digital Home President said, “China's smart TV market will experience explosive growth in 2012, and Lenovo is poised to give customers in China the technology that they want. Today we are introducing a smart TV product that went through three generations of R&D, and many more times as much customer feedback. With our excellent products and rich content and apps, we want to give users an outstanding experience and make smart TV a new place for families to happily gather together.”

As the first television product to adopt the Android 4.0 OS, Lenovo Smart TV employs the powerful Qualcomm dual core 1.5GHz CPU. Supported by Lenovo’s R&D capabilities combining a “trinity" of software, hardware and cloud services, Lenovo Smart TV delivers three major innovations to the user experience.

  • The first is a user-friendly interactive system, like the simple and intuitive “Sandwich” User Interface that integrates touch, voice, air mouse, gravity sensor, smart keyboard and traditional television remote control in a “Six in One” Smart Remote Controller.

  • The second is high-quality video on demand. Lenovo and SMG’s BesTV established joint venture ISmartv to exclusively provide users with customized online HD video resources that already amounted to more than 300,000 hours of viewing.

  • The third is a wide variety of applications based on an open platform. With its Le Store app developer community, Lenovo has already developed over 1,000 custom apps for its smart TV covering games, education, SNS, life service and many others.

Lenovo is releasing four Lenovo Smart TV K-series devices — the 55-inch screen K91 and K81 and the 42-inch screen K81 and K71 — priced from RMB14,999 to RMB6,499. In the future, Lenovo will release new product lines to satisfy the demand of various user segments.

Starting from May, Lenovo Smart TV is going on sale in Suning stores in nine cities—Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Nanjing, Suzhou, Hangzhou, Ningbo, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Through its close relationship with IT and appliance channel stores and its own strong PC channels, Lenovo will establish a wide variety of sales channels for its smart TV. These include national and regional appliance and 3C stores, self-operated Lenovo stores and online sales.

Lenovo established an improved integrated service system exclusively for its smart TV products. The company will provide customer service through online service channels, a service hotline and physical service stations. Customers are allowed to receive free servicing twice on their Lenovo Smart TV, which includes on-site assembly, tuning and demos.

Lenovo Group chairman and CEO Yang Yuanqing, Lenovo Group senior vice president and Mobile Internet Digital Home president Liu Jun, Lenovo Group senior vice president and Lenovo China president Chen Xudong and other senior-level Lenovo management, Qualcomm senior vice president Luis Pineda, RTS and BesTV New Media Co. Ltd. vice chairman Zhang Dazhong, and other high-level Lenovo partners from Philips, LGD, Monotype, Sina and Game Loft all attended the press conference.

Attached: Partner stance on Lenovo Smart TV:

Qualcomm chairman and CEO Paul E. Jacobs
Lenovo Smart TV is the first smart TV in the world to adopt the Snapdragon™ Xiaolong processor, as well as the first to run on Android 4.0 OS. This excellent smart TV product is an accomplishment resulting from an extraordinary partnership — it combines Lenovo's insights in personal computing and consumer electronics with Qualcomm's expertise in mobile, computing and other multimedia fields.

SINA Corporation president and CEO Chao Guowei
Lenovo, a leader in China's IT industry, has leveraged the strengths of its product technology and major advantages over the course of many years in the PC field to develop and introduce its smart TV today. I believe that this will have a wide-reaching influence on the entire industry. Sina has developed the first TV-app - Sina Weibo TV - exclusively for Lenovo. This will allow users to discover and share their favorite content and interact with the TV programs they watch all without leaving their home.

By 2014 total sales revenue from the industrial base is expected to reach RMB10 billion, increasing to RMB50 billion within the next five years. The facility also has the potential to create nearly 10,000 job opportunities in the coming years, in a variety of related businesses. Included in this number, Lenovo within the next few years expects to employee several thousand R&D and management staff located at Wuhan, focused solely on advancing R&D in mobile Internet devices and application. The Lenovo (Wuhan) Industrial Base will help improve Lenovo’s entire supply chain as well as its R&D and marketing systems, by building even more end-to-end product capability.

As the central city supported by China’s strategy of promoting the development of central regions, Wuhan hosts the nation’s second independent innovation demonstration area after Beijing’s Zhongguancun. Wuhan has benefitted from the government’s efforts to promote the development of China’s central and western regions and has great growth potential, having already attracted investment from many Fortune 500 companies.

At the end of 2011, Lenovo became the world’s second-largest PC maker after being the world’s fastest growing PC maker for nine consecutive quarters. At the same time, Lenovo’s mobile Internet business made significant progress. The company is now a top-three smart phone maker in China with double-digit market share, and the second-place tablet maker with a market share of 16.5%, far ahead of its competitors in the android market.

Lenovo Completes Expansion at Whitsett Distribution Center

News release:

Lenovo Completes Expansion at Whitsett Distribution Center

Business growth drives need for more capacity; employment up 40 percent last year alone
WHITSETT, NC – May 2, 2012: Lenovo (HKSE: 992) (ADR: LNVGY) today marked completion of an expansion project at its U.S. Fulfillment Center (USFC) here, which was undertaken in response to rapid growth of the company’s business in North America, particularly in the consumer PC market. Volume handled through the Center has more than doubled since its opening in 2008, while employment has grown over 40 percent.

The expansion project, which began in late 2011, adds nearly 20 percent more space – almost 40,000 sq. ft. – to the distribution center. The facility, which employs approximately 160 full-time workers and shipped its 10 millionth unit last year, is Lenovo’s primary distribution hub serving North America. In addition to order fulfillment, It handles critical tasks such as product configuration, bundling of PC accessories and returns management.
“The Whitsett facility is a key component in our effort to increase distribution efficiency and provide even better service to our customers, particularly consumers,” said David Schmoock, senior vice president and president, Lenovo North America. “Lenovo has been the fastest growing major PC company for nine consecutive quarters, and our sales in North America are a big reason why.
“With the expanded product distribution and configuration capabilities made possible through this project, we’re confident that Lenovo will continue to build on its strong momentum in North America supported by this world-class facility,” he added.
A key motivation for Lenovo’s decision to expand the USFC was the company’s dramatic growth in the U.S. consumer PC market, which is served primarily through key retail partners such as Best Buy and Office Depot, among others. Through these partner relationships, Lenovo more than doubled its PC volume sold through U.S. retailers and topped five percent consumer PC market share for the first time.

Lenovo and VeriFone Announce Mobile Point of Sale Platform with PAYware Mobile Enterprise

News release:

Lenovo and VeriFone Announce Mobile Point of Sale Platform with PAYware Mobile Enterprise

Transforms Retail Customer Service with Secure Payments Anytime, Anywhere
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC – May 2, 2012: Lenovo (HKSE: 992) (ADR: LNVGY) and VeriFone Systems, Inc. (NYSE: PAY) today announced the ThinkPad Mobile POS, a complete mobile point of sale (POS) platform for retail outlets built on the Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet and a custom version of VeriFone’s PAYware Mobile Enterprise for Tablet payment solution. With the ThinkPad Mobile POS, retailers can easily configure, customize and manage an end-to-end point of sale platform that  delivers a more efficient and flexible alternative than stationary cash registers, helping to create new revenue opportunities for retailers, and improving the shopping experience for customers.

“The ThinkPad Mobile POS platform joins the rich ThinkPad heritage of productivity and durability with VeriFone’s global leadership in secure electronic payment solutions,” said Dilip Bhatia, vice president ThinkPad Business Unit, Lenovo. “The end result is a versatile and secure mobile platform that increases customer transaction speed and helps advance retail shopping to a new level of personal service.”

Retailers can remotely manage the ThinkPad Mobile POS with ease, including individual device tracking, managing applications, checking status on individual units and even remotely wiping and resetting devices to minimize on-site support intervention.  Information Technology managers also have full control over timing for operating system updates, which means avoiding unnecessary business disruptions and security risks created by unvetted updates from hardware vendors.

“Mobile solutions are enabling retailers to reimagine the point of sale and Lenovo’s ThinkPad Tablet solution with PAYware Mobile Enterprise makes it possible to engage customers in the aisle or wherever goods are being sold,” said Jennifer Miles, VeriFone executive vice president, North America.

Secure Shopping Experience
With the average cost of a cardholder data breach exceeding $6.6 million1, security is paramount in payment devices. The ThinkPad Mobile POS meets or exceeds PCI 3, EMV 1 and 2, UKCC and Interac requirements, ensuring secure acceptance of all forms of payment, including EMV (EuroPay, MasterCard and Visa), NFC (near field communication), debit and gift cards, electronic coupons, loyalty programs and promotions. VeriShield Total Protect encrypts cardholder data the instant it enters the tablet and the ThinkPad Mobile POS keeps cardholder data encrypted until receipt at a secure data center, eliminating the risk of data compromise.

Smart and Reliable ThinkPad Design for Multi-Function Use
Built to rigorous ThinkPad MilSpec standards that characterize all ThinkPad hardware, the ThinkPad tablet offers industry-leading durability with a brilliant display, multi-touch or pen input and dual HD cameras. The ThinkPad Mobile POS is the retailer’s mobile workhorse, powering customer service, store management, analytics, inventory control, scheduling and more. Unlike consumer tablets, Lenovo uniquely gives ThinkPad tablet users full control over the operating system, letting retailers determine what can run on the tablet and when it is updated.  Coupled with an enterprise-class service and support, the ThinkPad Tablet is ideally suited to mission critical application.

The POS case, designed by Targus, provides a clean contemporary look with a lightweight and ergonomic design. The multi-charge station charges up to five POS units, with case, in a single charge point.

In Focus: Lenovo’s Enhanced Experience Program Puts PCs on the Fast Track

In Focus: Lenovo’s Enhanced Experience Program Puts PCs on the Fast Track
April 26, 2012
With some of the fastest boot times on the market, Lenovo’s design philosophy is all about quality.
REDMOND, Wash. — April 26, 2012 — Three years ago, in the early days of Windows 7, Microsoft was working with PC makers to help enhance start-up times, sleep mode, battery life and the all-around performance of PCs, and this effort continues today.
Lenovo took this initiative one step further: Now in its third generation, the Lenovo Enhanced Experience (EE) has become less of a Microsoft initiative and more of the “secret sauce” behind the world’s second-largest maker of PCs.
“At Lenovo, we saw what Microsoft was trying to do, and embraced it,” says Michael Littler, director of Marketing for Lenovo’s Idea Product Group, which develops laptops, tablets and PCs for the consumer market. “We worked hard on the engineering side and achieved some excellent results in the first generation. With that success came some executive leadership for the program, and even more resources were put into the performance of our PCs.”

Today the third generation of the program, known as EE3, has brought Lenovo to the top tier of PC performance across a number of key benchmarks. Going well beyond the scope of Microsoft’s initial efforts, Lenovo now runs proprietary software that’s enabled the company to optimize performance on the Windows 7 platform. The program stretches across Lenovo’s product portfolio, from consumer notebooks, to small business products, all the way to the enterprise-class ThinkPad line, one of the oldest brands in the PC universe.
“For each of those segments there are advantages,” Littler says. “But it’s not just the actual benefit of the PC booting faster or having a longer battery life. Those performance metrics are a symptom of the quality of the product overall.”
Littler says that focus on quality is the driving force in Lenovo’s engineering. When designing products such as the new IdeaCentre A720 all-in-one PC, which is being launched this year, Lenovo strives to put out the best-quality product possible. Then, once the product is in production, the company works to optimize the cost through sourcing the components more efficiently, to bring that product to a wider portion of the market.
“It always begins with building the best products we can,” Littler says. “For a generation, the ThinkPad line has been renowned as a quality, reliable and robust product, and we place that same priority on our consumer line.”
As an engineering manager on the Microsoft team that engages with Lenovo, Michelle Niethammer has seen that philosophy play out over the years. Niethammer’s team works with Lenovo to optimize the company’s PCs and ensure all the components work well in the Windows environment.
“They’re very focused on quality, high-performing machines, and they continually improve on performance,” Niethammer says. “They’ve really driven that into their core engineering process. They test every machine. They have certain goals that must be met or they won’t release a new design to production.”
For this year’s refresh of Lenovo’s EE3 PCs, Niethammer says Lenovo has optimized everything from BIOS to all of the drivers in an effort to get users to the desktop quickly. When it comes to battery life, Niethammer’s team has worked to evaluate which apps should load upon startup and which should be user-initiated.
“Just by moving some apps into the user action category we got about 30 more minutes of battery life,” she says. “Like removing extra weight from your car, it improves the PC’s mileage and performance.”
For EE3, Niethammer says Lenovo has also built some intelligence into the way PCs manage battery life, taking cues from user behavior. The new functionality is an example of how the PC maker has expanded on Microsoft’s foundational work and made the EE program pure Lenovo.
“If you always throw the machine in your bag after work and never turn it on until the next morning, it’ll actually learn that pattern and go into hibernate mode at the appropriate time,” she says. “About a half hour before you typically turn it on, it’ll move back into sleep, so it wakes up very quickly when you need it.”
With this year’s product refresh coming out, Littler says the Lenovo line features many of the traditional products that have made the company successful, with some new twists like the all-in-one A720. This year’s achievements in improved performance, he says, have positioned Lenovo well to deliver very fast PCs for the Windows 7 world that can make the transition to Windows 8 when it comes time.
“Windows 8 is a whole new ballgame, and we’re working closely with Microsoft’s engineers to see how we can improve and push the envelope for performance even further,” Littler says. “With the products we’re launching this year, there’s no need to wait for Windows 8 to come out. These products are some of the fastest out there for Windows 7 and will perform well on the Windows 8 platform as well.”
