PACSystems® RXi Platform Changes How Automation is Done
- Next generation control platform designed for the needs of the Industrial Internet
- Integration of industry standard technologies, PROFINET and COM Express, to deliver ultimate flexibility and cost-effective upgrades for future control and cloud-based automation software environments
- Innovative rugged design in small form factor to enable factory floor computing, even in harsh environments
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. — JULY 17, 2012—GE Intelligent Platforms (NYSE: GE) today announced the PACSystems® RXi, the company’s revolutionary new control and computing platform designed for the needs of the Industrial Internet. Based on leading-edge computing and network technology, and supported by an emerging ecosystem of cloud-based support tools, the RXi will help customers gain productivity benefits from machine-to-machine connections and the skill sets of a digital native workforce. The RXi platform builds on GE’s deep expertise in the design of embedded control platforms as well as industry-standard open architecture technologies that deliver what companies in today’s economy need –- improved performance, integration into the Industrial Internet, and greater uptime and low total cost of ownership (TCO).
To provide the performance sophisticated control applications need today, the core of the product family is a COM Express architecture with multi-core CPUs, which will allow GE to offer a range of products that will be continually refreshed without impacting the user’s application. The RXi platform offers a full complement of high speed interfaces, with multiple gigabit Ethernet and USB 3.0 ports. These high performance features are coupled with GE’s PACSystems control engine to deliver uncompromised performance and application flexibility.
The PACSystems RXi family of controllers has built-in redundant PROFINET interfaces, delivering high performance, high uptime control solutions. RXi Industrial PC (IPC) configurations are unique in the industry, able to run HMI, Historian and analytics applications right at the machine, even in harsh environments. This facilitates better real time control of operations and improved integration into plant-wide and enterprise systems. The RXi platform fully supports GE’s new cloud-based collaborative automation platform development and deployment paradigm.
“The RXi controller is the next evolution of PAC controllers,” said Steve Pavlosky, Product General Manager for GE Intelligent Platforms’ Control & Communication Systems. “The RXi platform is a key element in our strategy to deliver high performance control solutions that can be developed, deployed, and maintained with our new collaborative, cloud-based automation platform – delivering true integration with the Industrial Internet. The platform’s PROFINET-based distributed architecture offers the best combination of high performance control with distributed I/O for lower installation and maintenance costs coupled with redundant I/O networking for high reliability. The RXi runs the same high performance PACSystems control engine found in our RX7i and RX3i products, enabling seamless application portability between form factors. The RXi platform can also be used as a rugged industrial PC platform for the flexibility of an industrial PC for factory floor computing with the reliability of a PLC.”
From a design perspective, the RXi controller is a departure from traditional systems. First, it has no local I/O which creates the basis for future upgradeability. Second, it has built-in PROFINET with ring redundancy to provide a simple to use, low installation cost, high performance redundant I/O network. With open standard PROFINET as the I/O network, users are free to choose best of breed I/O and other devices, like drives and vision systems, for use in their systems. Third, the ability to deploy the RXi architecture using both control and IPC modules interconnected provides a compact, high performance solution for applications requiring visualization, data archiving, or other advanced computational tasks at the point of control. Fourth, since it is based on standard Intel® architecture, GE can deliver control solutions with unique capabilities such as very large memory sizes and on-board storage capability. Finally, the integrated Intelligent Display Module allows users to perform standard maintenance functions without the need for a separate computer running programming software and creates a bridge that integrates the control system with the Industrial Internet.
The platform’s Industrial PC (IPC) is very small form factor, and is rugged and fanless, for companies looking for factory floor computing. GE’s rugged COM Express modular CPU platform incorporates patented thermal monitoring technology with sophisticated passive cooling techniques for a high performance computing “fanless” industrial computing and control platform, eliminating susceptibility to failure which can result in thermal shutdown of other IPC systems that rely on fans for cooling.
The design includes connectors on the controller and IPC so that the two products can be mounted together for cableless communications for applications where both control and computing are desired. The IPC can also be mounted on the back of a series of touch screen displays creating a family of modular panel IPCs.
“This platform supports several trends in the industry including control sustainability, standards based open architectures, computing and control at the machine level, and integration into the Industrial Internet,” continued Pavlosky. “Customers expect their manufacturing assets to outlast the control system. This new way of developing a control platform allows them to maintain their investment while taking advantage of the newest technologies to make their assets more productive, more reliable and more cost efficient.”

Work, Rest and Play: European Holidaymakers Demand Seamless Internet Connectivity
Press release:
Work, Rest and Play: European Holidaymakers Demand Seamless Internet Connectivity

New Research Reveals That Good Mobile Data Coverage Is Becoming a Must for Holidaymakers, With Many Selecting Leisure Resorts Based on the Quality of the Internet Connection
GENEVA -- (Marketwire) -- 07/16/2012 -- Forget sun, sea and sights -- more than a third of European holidaymakers say that good mobile data coverage is a determining factor when choosing a destination, with 86 percent expecting wireless connectivity at their hotels to feed their "online addiction." The finding comes from new research conducted by leader in fabric networking, Brocade(1) (NASDAQ : BRCD ), which points to a sea change in the holidaying patterns of increasingly well-connected European travellers.
On vacation, as at home, the temptation to work from mobile devices persists, with more than half of holidaymakers admitting to doing so. Whether it's checking one final e-mail in the departure lounge, or making a conference call from the beach bar, it seems that the majority of us have a hard time letting go, on vacation or otherwise.
Some 95 percent of the respondents admitted taking their mobile devices on vacation, and they are as likely to use them for work as for personal use. More than half (56 percent) of respondents said that they used their mobile device for accessing work e-mail or downloading work documents, an increase over last year's figure of 48 percent.
"There is significant blurring between personal time and work time in modern society, with the consumerization of IT and BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) working policies leading many people to rely on smartphones and tablet devices around the clock, wherever they may be and whatever they may be doing," said John McHugh, Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer at Brocade. "Our research clearly illustrates that this is causing fundamental changes in working patterns and demands on networking architectures. It used to be that when people went on vacation, that's what they did. Now it seems that we can never switch off from work, even when we're at the beach. With this, the demand on service providers and mobile operators to provide ubiquitous, reliable coverage has never been higher."
More than a third (37 percent) of respondents noted that good mobile data coverage (for example, 3G/4G) was a determining factor in their choice of destination. Furthermore, 86 percent expected hotels to provide free Wi-Fi access. A lack of available Wi-Fi was also the second most popular concern about accessing the Internet from abroad, behind only high roaming costs.
These findings, McHugh suggests, could show the leisure industry the way to securing a competitive edge in challenging economic times: "With incoming 4G networks promising to multiply speeds and available bandwidth, mobile data coverage will exert an even greater influence on people's holiday choices. People want to reduce the overall impact of work on their holidays -- both for themselves and for those they travel with -- and they are looking for ways to get the same amount of work done in just a fraction of the time. To do this, the underlying network infrastructure needs to be able to cope."
However, the findings may indicate that there is still a gulf between the expectations of modern travellers and the reality. "Many destinations remain unable to satisfy holidaymakers' demands when it comes to connectivity," explained McHugh. "Hotel owners should look at the incredible demand for free Wi-Fi networking and provide residents with reliable connectivity -- whether in their rooms, at the bar or by the pool. Widely available, high-quality Internet access could very soon make the difference between a hugely successful season and a disastrous one. Without it, hotels risk damaging both their revenues and their reputations."
Other key findings of the research included:
- Smartphones emerged as the most popular device for holidaymakers, with 91 percent of respondents taking one with them on holiday. This was followed closely by laptops and netbooks (49 percent), and tablet computers (42 percent).
- Coming in second only to accessing personal e-mail [when asked the primary reason for using a connected device on holiday] was accessing work e-mail. The use of social media also featured prominently in the responses, placing third.
- Approximately a third (32 percent) stated that they intended to stream coverage of the Olympics through their devices whilst on vacation, again placing immense pressure on local networks to provide sufficient bandwidth and service reliability to users.
"These findings serve as a reminder that the smartphone/tablet revolution is ongoing, and that the challenges of supporting the volumes of mobile data will continue to tax the communications industry," continued McHugh. "This explosion in mobile data is one of the key challenges to the industry. Mobile devices will place an increasing strain not just on Wi-Fi and mobile networks, but also on corporate and data centre networks that form the foundation of any service. These underlying networks need to be extremely robust, and designed specifically for the challenges of mobile data. With solutions that underpin more than a third of global Internet traffic, Brocade is ideally positioned to help the industry meet the needs of the modern holidaymaker."
In this type of always-on business environment, the Brocade® family of high-performance, scalable, cloud-optimized networking solutions offers service providers and businesses the confidence to meet the demands of the roving vacationer. These solutions help organizations deliver information and applications anywhere at any time, while bringing new levels of simplicity and manageability to the campus.

HEIGHTENED SECURITY IN NEW ANDROID APP STORE
PRESS RELEASES
HEIGHTENED SECURITY IN NEW ANDROID APP STORE
MOBILE SECURITY LEADER AVG TECHNOLOGIES PARTNERS WITH APP PLATFORM LIVEWIRE MOBILE, INC.
LITTLETON, MASS., and AMSTERDAM - 9 May 2012 - Livewire Mobile, Inc., (otcmarkets: LVWR), the one-stop digital content solutions provider for carriers, consumer device manufacturers, media companies, and consumers, and AVG Technologies (NYSE: AVG), the provider of Internet and mobile security to approximately 108 million active users, today launched an initiative in which AVG will provide advanced security checks to apps delivered from Livewire hosted Android app stores for mobile network operators and handset manufacturers.
With concerns increasing around the potential security dangers for smartphone users, the two companies intend to use AVG’s innovative technology to help users protect themselves from potential malware and viruses.
Livewire Mobile has extensive relationships with Android app developers around the world and will host and manage the new app stores on its industry leading Daius digital content platform.
Livewire Mobile, in collaboration with AVG, is now working with its developer community to curate and deliver security-screened app stores for customers around the world. Every app being offered to consumers in Livewire’s app stores will be pre-screened by AVG’s technology. Additionally, once a user downloads an app from one of Livewire’s secure app stores, every app update following the initial download will be similarly screened on the device using AVG’s Mobilation® for Android security solution. Mobilation, will be made available free of charge to every user to complete the process.
"Our platform hosts and manages mobile entertainment services for mobile network operators, handset manufacturers and media companies worldwide," said Livewire Mobile COO Dave Moreau. “We believe that while Google has made great advances in providing security for Google Play, malware and viruses are still an important challenge for smartphone users worldwide. The solution we have put together with AVG provides an innovative ’clean‘ service for consumers and helps MNOs and handset manufacturers deliver on their duty of care to their subscribers. AVG is a leading provider of internet and mobile security – what better way to protect consumers than providing them with AVG’s powerful technology?"
"The growing use of mobile devices to connect to social networks and entertainment services has made it a preferred method for cyber criminals to spread malware," said JR Smith, CEO of AVG Technologies. "Our AVG Q1 2012 Community Powered Threat Report indicated a major increase in the use of social networks such as Facebook and Twitter to target Android users – by tricking them into installing malicious apps. In 2011 alone, Google removed more than 100 malicious apps from the official Android market, Google Play. Our joint initiative with Livewire Mobile will help give Android users peace of mind to use their phone apps to safely interact with their favourite social networks and entertainment services."
AVG and Livewire Mobile are taking part in the Privacy in Mobile Applications Initiative, unveiled last month by the MEF, the global community for mobile content and commerce. The initiative was officially launched at MEF’s inaugural Privacy Summit in Washington DC with the goal to help the global mobile industry build consumer trust when interacting with mobile apps.
Rimma Perelmuter, MEF Executive Director, said: "We welcome such thought leadership from two of our members. It’s essential the mobile ecosystem works together to address issues around consumer trust. Both the recently announced privacy initiative and our on-going initiative work around security in M-commerce support the wider industry to overcome key barriers to growth and create a trusted environment for consumers."

Garaia's Innovation Pole facilitates collaboration and corporate innovation through Cisco TelePresence
PRESS RELEASE
Garaia's Innovation Pole facilitates collaboration and corporate innovation through Cisco TelePresence
Unitronics has been the partner responsible for the deployment that will be able to connect with more than 3.000 rooms all over the world
Madrid, 17 May 2012 – Cisco has announced that the Garaia Innovation Centre, situated in Mondragón, belonging to the Network of Technological Parks of Euskadi and the APTE (Association of Technological Parks of Spain), has inaugurated the first public telepresence room in Spain within the private sector, based on the Cisco TelePresence® platform, which will allow the businesses of Euskadi to connect with partners, clients and suppliers located anywhere in the world. The activity of the Garaia Centre is totally oriented to R&D businesses, universities and technological centre, promoting an innovative culture and acting as a meeting point.
This new service of the park, in pay-as-you-go format, is open to the entire corporate fabric of the Basque Country, with particular attention to organisations active in the four technological parks of the community (Zamudio, Miramón, Miñano and the Garaia Centre), and has a clear objective to thrust the corporate activity forward.
This service was put into action today by means of a virtual meeting that made it possible to connect interlocutors located in the Garaia head office (Mondragón) with the Cisco offices in Madrid, London and Shangai (China). The participants held a face-to-face conversation with high-quality sound and high-definition video equipment, in an uninterrupted experience of total immersion.
Major keys of the announcements
- The Cisco TelePresence platform, which uses Garaia's IP network, re-creates meeting rooms, thus bringing together participants located far from each other in a real way, as though they are actually present in the same place, which gives important benefits:
- The organisation of the meetings is as simple as making a phone call, and the controls of the room are totally transparent and intuitive.
- Innovative ‘plug and play' collaboration tools can be used, with the possibility to record the session on high-quality video or share a PC desk situated on the other side of the world by means of the Cisco WebEx® tool.
- Participants can be connected with up to 48 locations at the same meeting.
- Unitronics was the Cisco Gold Certified Partner in charge of integration at the Garaia head office of the Cisco TelePresence System 3000, designed for a room of up to six seats with all the equipment (including network sockets, data and supply in the table).
- This system -consisting of three 65-inch plasma screens- offers high-definition video resolution (1080p) and high-quality audio, as well as advanced connectors based on standard that give great flexibility and integration with telepresence rooms, auditoriums, meeting rooms and applications for education and telemedicine.
- Unitronics will also be in charge of supporting, updating and maintaining the Cisco TelePresence system, as well as dealing with monitoring and technical support.
- The head offices of Garaia and the Cisco offices in Madrid, London and Shangai (China) have been connected through the network of Tata Communications and the Intercompany Cisco TelePresence service based on the Cisco TelePresence Exchange System architecture, which makes it possible to use telepresence to meet with other organisations that also have telepresence technology or through public telepresence rooms, regardless of the supplier of telecommunications services.
- Tata Communications has already deployed public Cisco TelePresence rooms -at its own offices, in hotels of various chains such as Taj Hotels and Starwood, airports, business centres, etc. in order to offer this service in approximately 30 cities by means of the pay-as-you-go procedure for use by executives who travel all over the world, people who work remotely or commercial partners.
- There are over 1,000 Cisco TelePresence rooms located in the offices of Cisco all over the world that can also connect with any other public or private room that has a telepresence system based on standards.
Declarations of support
- Andoni Gartzía, managing director of Garaia
"As the first public telepresence room of the Basque Country and one of the first in the whole of Spain, this service will allow our corporate fabric to collaborate much more efficiently with working teams located in any part of the world, thus reinforcing our objective to promote innovation."
- Jesús Mansilla, director of Medium and Small Businesses in Cisco España
"Thanks to working closely with the major world operators, Cisco is putting into practice its idea of a global Cisco TelePresence network. The combination of reliable and safe Telepresence services between businesses, and access to the public Cisco TelePresence rooms is making it easier for organisations to expand their operations in line with increased productivity".
- José Antonio Montes, commercial director of the Northern Area in Unitronics
"Telepresence has pushed ahead enormously over the past few years, and it is now well established as a safe and highly advanced collaboration system that makes it possible to replace travel and live meetings, with the consequent reduction in terms of costs and CO2 emissions. Participating in this project has been a pleasure for us and we congratulate by the fact that this first virtual meeting driven from Garaia has been an unqualified success. We hope that this innovative formula can be passed on to a larger number of businesses and institutions".
