Garaia's Innovation Pole facilitates collaboration and corporate innovation through Cisco TelePresence

PRESS RELEASE

Garaia's Innovation Pole facilitates collaboration and corporate innovation through Cisco TelePresence

Unitronics has been the partner responsible for the deployment that will be able to connect with more than 3.000 rooms all over the world

Madrid, 17 May 2012 – Cisco has announced that the Garaia Innovation Centre, situated in Mondragón, belonging to the Network of Technological Parks of Euskadi and the APTE (Association of Technological Parks of Spain), has inaugurated the first public telepresence room in Spain within the private sector, based on the Cisco TelePresence® platform, which will allow the businesses of Euskadi to connect with partners, clients and suppliers located anywhere in the world. The activity of the Garaia Centre is totally oriented to R&D businesses, universities and technological centre, promoting an innovative culture and acting as a meeting point.
This new service of the park, in pay-as-you-go format, is open to the entire corporate fabric of the Basque Country, with particular attention to organisations active in the four technological parks of the community (Zamudio, Miramón, Miñano and the Garaia Centre), and has a clear objective to thrust the corporate activity forward.
This service was put into action today by means of a virtual meeting that made it possible to connect interlocutors located in the Garaia head office (Mondragón) with the Cisco offices in Madrid, London and Shangai (China). The participants held a face-to-face conversation with high-quality sound and high-definition video equipment, in an uninterrupted experience of total immersion.
Major keys of the announcements
  • The Cisco TelePresence platform, which uses Garaia's IP network, re-creates meeting rooms, thus bringing together participants located far from each other in a real way, as though they are actually present in the same place, which gives important benefits:
  • The organisation of the meetings is as simple as making a phone call, and the controls of the room are totally transparent and intuitive.
  • Innovative ‘plug and play' collaboration tools can be used, with the possibility to record the session on high-quality video or share a PC desk situated on the other side of the world by means of the Cisco WebEx® tool.
  • Participants can be connected with up to 48 locations at the same meeting.
  • Unitronics was the Cisco Gold Certified Partner in charge of integration at the Garaia head office of the Cisco TelePresence System 3000, designed for a room of up to six seats with all the equipment (including network sockets, data and supply in the table).
  • This system -consisting of three 65-inch plasma screens- offers high-definition video resolution (1080p) and high-quality audio, as well as advanced connectors based on standard that give great flexibility and integration with telepresence rooms, auditoriums, meeting rooms and applications for education and telemedicine.
  • Unitronics will also be in charge of supporting, updating and maintaining the Cisco TelePresence system, as well as dealing with monitoring and technical support.
  • The head offices of Garaia and the Cisco offices in Madrid, London and Shangai (China) have been connected through the network of Tata Communications and the Intercompany Cisco TelePresence service based on the  Cisco TelePresence Exchange System architecture, which makes it possible to use telepresence to meet with other organisations that also have telepresence technology or through public telepresence rooms, regardless of the supplier of telecommunications services.
  • Tata Communications has already deployed public Cisco TelePresence  rooms -at its own offices, in hotels of various chains such as Taj Hotels and Starwood, airports, business centres, etc. in order to offer this service in approximately 30 cities by means of the pay-as-you-go procedure for use by executives who travel all over the world, people who work remotely or commercial partners.
  • There are over 1,000 Cisco TelePresence rooms located in the offices of Cisco all over the world that can also connect with any other public or private room that has a telepresence system based on standards.
Declarations of support
  • Andoni Gartzía, managing director of Garaia
"As the first public telepresence room of the Basque Country and one of the first in the whole of Spain, this service will allow our corporate fabric to collaborate much more efficiently with working teams located in any part of the world, thus reinforcing our objective to promote innovation."
  • Jesús Mansilla, director of Medium and Small Businesses in Cisco España
"Thanks to working closely with the major world operators, Cisco is putting into practice its idea of a global Cisco TelePresence networkThe combination of reliable and safe Telepresence services between businesses, and access to the public Cisco TelePresence rooms is making it easier for organisations to expand their operations in line with increased productivity".
  • José Antonio Montes, commercial director of the Northern Area in Unitronics
"Telepresence has pushed ahead enormously over the past few years, and it is now well established as a safe and highly advanced collaboration system that makes it possible to replace travel and live meetings, with the consequent reduction in terms of costs and CO2 emissions. Participating in this project has been a pleasure for us  and we congratulate by the fact that this first virtual meeting driven from Garaia has been an unqualified success. We hope that this innovative formula can be passed on to a larger number of businesses and institutions".

Cloud Computing Security Benefits Dispel Adoption Barrier for Small to Midsize Businesses

News release:

Cloud Computing Security Benefits Dispel Adoption Barrier for Small to Midsize Businesses
May 14, 2012
Cloud services reduce time and money spent managing security and increase protection against cyberthreats, Microsoft study shows.
REDMOND, Wash. — May 14, 2012 — Research released today by Microsoft Corp. shows that small and midsize businesses (SMBs) are gaining significant IT security benefits from using the cloud, according to a new Microsoft study in five geographies.
Cloud security is a key topic of discussion for many considering the cloud. Microsoft's Trustworthy Computing group conducted research in the small and midsize businesses (SMB) sector in the U.S.
Cloud Security Benefits for SMBs (U.S.)
May 14, 2012
Cloud security is a key topic of discussion for many considering the cloud. Microsoft's Trustworthy Computing group conducted research in the small and midsize businesses (SMB) sector in the U.S.
Download: Web | Print

The study shows that 35 percent of U.S. companies surveyed have experienced noticeably higher levels of security since moving to the cloud.1 In addition, 32 percent say they spend less time worrying about the threat of cyberattacks. U.S. SMBs using the cloud also spend 32 percent less time each week managing security than companies not using the cloud. They are also five times more likely to have reduced what they spend on managing security as a percentage of overall IT budget.
“There’s a perception that security is a barrier to cloud adoption,” said Adrienne Hall, general manager, Microsoft Trustworthy Computing. “Yet when companies embrace and invest in cloud services, they find the benefits far outweigh previous concerns.”Time and money spent managing security prior to using cloud services is being reinvested by SMBs to grow their businesses and be more competitive. The survey shows the following in the U.S.:
•Of SMBs that use the cloud, 41 percent said they were able to employ more staff in roles that directly benefit sales or business growth, 39 percent invest in more product development or innovation, and 37 percent experienced improved agility and competitiveness.
•More than half of those surveyed (52 percent) said using the cloud enabled them to add new products and services that benefit their business more quickly and securely.
•Of those surveyed, 42 percent said the cloud made it easier for them to scale their business to explore new markets.
“Any solution that helps SMBs’ bottom line has to be good for them and the economy,” said Ryan Brock, vice president of Worldwide SMB Cloud & Channels at Access Markets International Partners. “When it comes to security, the cloud offers SMBs a level of expertise, specialist resources and investment that they cannot hope to match. This translates into cost and time savings and better protection against cyberthreats, which gives them the freedom to innovate and grow their business.”
An example of a company that has realized the security benefits of the cloud is SkyWire Media Inc., a small business in Nevada that helps other businesses personalize and distribute rich content to mobile devices. As a small business, it was a challenge for SkyWire to keep up to date with security management. After transitioning to Windows Intune, a cloud-based management and security solution, the company no longer faces the same problem.
By simplifying software distribution and streamlining the security upgrade process, Windows Intune helped SkyWire save $90,000 (U.S.) in IT costs over a span of six months, a savings of $15,000 (U.S.) per month. By retiring third-party antivirus and antimalware tools, the company was able to redeploy the cost of overseeing these processes.
“Since we started using Windows Intune, support calls are down by 70 percent,” said Thomas Castleberry, chief operating officer, SkyWire. “We can now prevent malware before it interferes with the productivity of our salespeople — and this means they can go out and win new business.”The study, commissioned by Microsoft and conducted by research company comScore Inc., polled companies with between 100 and 250 PCs in the U.S., Singapore, Malaysia, India and Hong Kong.
Founded in 1975, Microsoft (Nasdaq “MSFT”) is the worldwide leader in software, services and solutions that help people and businesses realize their full potential.
¹ For the purpose of this research, cloud users were defined as companies that used a cloud service via a subscription model.
