PACSystems® RXi Platform Changes How Automation is Done

Press release:

17 July 2012
PACSystems® RXi Platform Changes How Automation is Done

  • Next generation control platform designed for the needs of the Industrial Internet
  • Integration of industry standard technologies, PROFINET and COM Express, to deliver ultimate flexibility and cost-effective upgrades for future control and cloud-based automation software environments
  • Innovative rugged design in small form factor to enable factory floor computing, even in harsh environments

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. — JULY 17, 2012—GE Intelligent Platforms (NYSE: GE) today announced the PACSystems® RXi, the company’s revolutionary new control and computing platform designed for the needs of the Industrial Internet. Based on leading-edge computing and network technology, and supported by an emerging ecosystem of cloud-based support tools, the RXi will help customers gain productivity benefits from machine-to-machine connections and the skill sets of a digital native workforce. The RXi platform builds on GE’s deep expertise in the design of embedded control platforms as well as industry-standard open architecture technologies that deliver what companies in today’s economy need –- improved performance, integration into the Industrial Internet, and greater uptime and low total cost of ownership (TCO).
To provide the performance sophisticated control applications need today, the core of the product family is a COM Express architecture with multi-core CPUs, which will allow GE to offer a range of products that will be continually refreshed without impacting the user’s application. The RXi platform offers a full complement of high speed interfaces, with multiple gigabit Ethernet and USB 3.0 ports. These high performance features are coupled with GE’s PACSystems control engine to deliver uncompromised performance and application flexibility.
The PACSystems RXi family of controllers has built-in redundant PROFINET interfaces, delivering high performance, high uptime control solutions. RXi Industrial PC (IPC) configurations are unique in the industry, able to run HMI, Historian and analytics applications right at the machine, even in harsh environments. This facilitates better real time control of operations and improved integration into plant-wide and enterprise systems. The RXi platform fully supports GE’s new cloud-based collaborative automation platform development and deployment paradigm.
“The RXi controller is the next evolution of PAC controllers,” said Steve Pavlosky, Product General Manager for GE Intelligent Platforms’ Control & Communication Systems. “The RXi platform is a key element in our strategy to deliver high performance control solutions that can be developed, deployed, and maintained with our new collaborative, cloud-based automation platform – delivering true integration with the Industrial Internet. The platform’s PROFINET-based distributed architecture offers the best combination of high performance control with distributed I/O for lower installation and maintenance costs coupled with redundant I/O networking for high reliability. The RXi runs the same high performance PACSystems control engine found in our RX7i and RX3i products, enabling seamless application portability between form factors. The RXi platform can also be used as a rugged industrial PC platform for the flexibility of an industrial PC for factory floor computing with the reliability of a PLC.”
From a design perspective, the RXi controller is a departure from traditional systems. First, it has no local I/O which creates the basis for future upgradeability. Second, it has built-in PROFINET with ring redundancy to provide a simple to use, low installation cost, high performance redundant I/O network. With open standard PROFINET as the I/O network, users are free to choose best of breed I/O and other devices, like drives and vision systems, for use in their systems. Third, the ability to deploy the RXi architecture using both control and IPC modules interconnected provides a compact, high performance solution for applications requiring visualization, data archiving, or other advanced computational tasks at the point of control. Fourth, since it is based on standard Intel® architecture, GE can deliver control solutions with unique capabilities such as very large memory sizes and on-board storage capability. Finally, the integrated Intelligent Display Module allows users to perform standard maintenance functions without the need for a separate computer running programming software and creates a bridge that integrates the control system with the Industrial Internet.
The platform’s Industrial PC (IPC) is very small form factor, and is rugged and fanless, for companies looking for factory floor computing. GE’s rugged COM Express modular CPU platform incorporates patented thermal monitoring technology with sophisticated passive cooling techniques for a high performance computing “fanless” industrial computing and control platform, eliminating susceptibility to failure which can result in thermal shutdown of other IPC systems that rely on fans for cooling.
The design includes connectors on the controller and IPC so that the two products can be mounted together for cableless communications for applications where both control and computing are desired. The IPC can also be mounted on the back of a series of touch screen displays creating a family of modular panel IPCs.
“This platform supports several trends in the industry including control sustainability, standards based open architectures, computing and control at the machine level, and integration into the Industrial Internet,” continued Pavlosky. “Customers expect their manufacturing assets to outlast the control system. This new way of developing a control platform allows them to maintain their investment while taking advantage of the newest technologies to make their assets more productive, more reliable and more cost efficient.”

Some Ultra Disappointments for Computer Makers

By NICK WINGFIELD and QUENTIN HARDY

The numbers are in from the PC industry's main scorekeepers -- the research firms IDC and Gartner -- and it looks as if one of the great growth hopes for the industry, ultrabooks, again failed to deliver.

On Wednesday evening, both IDC and Gartner reported that worldwide PC shipments fell 0.1 percent in the second quarter from a year ago, a poor showing for an industry that has been searching for a growth stimulant. As in the past, there are a bunch of factors accounting for the stagnation of the PC business, including consumers who seem far more enamored with getting the latest smartphones and iPads than they are with buying PCs.

Both Gartner and IDC singled out the thin laptop category known as ultrabooks for failing to lift the business. These devices were the PC industry's answer to Apple's MacBook Air, the superslim aluminum notebook that has been a strong seller. Intel, the chip maker whose products power most Windows PCs, plowed a fortune into the development of technologies useful for ultrabooks to encourage its PC customers to make more of the computers.

PC companies then did so, turning out a wide variety of Windows-based ultrabooks with thin cases and shiny metallic shells. But the public hasn't warmed to the devices yet, in part because they remain expensive.

SAO PAULO, Brazil
"The Itu center will give Lenovo even better end-to-end control of our Brazil business, enabling greater speed in delivering the right products to every large organization, small business and consumer in the country, with industry leading value and the most responsive delivery and services..."
SAO PAULO, Brazil (July 5, 2012) – Lenovo (HKSE: 992) (ADR: LNVGY) the world’s second largest PC company, announced today that it will invest US $30 million to build a new manufacturing and distribution center in Itu, Sao Paulo, Brazil that will produce and deliver a full range of commercial and consumer PCs for its customers in Brazil.  The new 325,000 square foot facility, scheduled to begin operations in December 2012, is likely to employ as many as 700 workers when it reaches full capacity within two years, and it will establish a more integrated business model in Brazil while extending the Company’s overall commitment to its customers there.

Lenovo has been the world’s fastest growing major PC company for 10 consecutive quarters, and aims to build on this success by aggressively expanding its business in Brazil, the world’s third largest PC market in 2011.

“Today’s announcement represents the first step in a bold, long-term plan that will encompass both organic and inorganic growth strategies, with a goal to more than double our market share in Brazil,” said Dan Stone, Lenovo vice president and newly appointed country general manager in Brazil.  “This new, state-of-the-art manufacturing and distribution center will give us the greater flexibility and efficiency needed to deliver a full range of exceptional and competitively priced personal computing products to a wider range of customers.  It will position Lenovo to grow faster than the overall market in Brazil and match our successful track record around the world.”

“The Itu center will give Lenovo even better end-to-end control of our Brazil business, enabling greater speed in delivering the right products to every large organization, small business and consumer in the country, with industry leading value and the most responsive delivery and services,” added Gerry Smith, senior vice president, Global Supply Chain & Global Services, Lenovo.

The Itu, Sao Paulo manufacturing and distribution center will produce and deliver a full range of notebook and desktop systems for both commercial and consumer markets.  The facility will enable the company to significantly expand its product portfolio in Brazil while strengthening price competitiveness, and shortening order delivery times for customers there.  It will further extend Lenovo’s efficient global manufacturing network, which leverages a hybrid mix of in-house, end-to-end factories and outsourcing partners to meet the needs of customers in over 160 countries.

Business Intelligence in the Palm of Your Hand

News release:

Business Intelligence in the Palm of Your Hand
May 21, 2012
Developed by Microsoft partner Extended Results, the PushBI application provides instant analysis of intelligent systems data through PCs, tablets and phones.
REDMOND, Wash. — May 21, 2012 — Using embedded devices as part of an intelligent system can enable any organization to collect valuable data in new ways. But once the information is available, how do you make sense of it all? The world of intelligent systems is, after all, about using that data to make better decisions.
Although business intelligence software has progressed mightily from a decade ago when running reports required the help of the IT department, turning raw data into something useful for analysis is still often a team effort that can require a lot of legwork for administrators. Companies such as large retailers, manufacturers and logistics organizations are especially interested in finding a more elegant way to track business performance across complex networks of transactions and interactions.
According to Bryan Colyer of Redmond-based Extended Results — part BI consulting practice and part software developer — as more companies connect embedded devices and enterprise IT within intelligent systems, the need for applications that can turn that information into something usable is exploding.
PushBI by Extended Results can take information from SQL databases, Excel spreadsheets and more, and deliver instant reports to your phone or PC.
Making Sense of the Data Deluge
May 21, 2012
PushBI by Extended Results can take information from SQL databases, Excel spreadsheets and more, and deliver instant reports to your phone or PC.

“We’ve seen a strong need in retail, because so much of their information is in silos,” Colyer says. “But companies across industries are craving a way to help their corporate offices collaborate with stores and warehouses, to monitor the rhythm of the business and provide insight for better decisions.”
To help its clients solve this problem, Extended Results has developed an application called PushBI that is able to tap into almost any data source, fromSQL Server and other databases toExcel spreadsheets and Web services. With business intelligence logic built on top and real-time operational data underneath, PushBI is able to deliver up-to-the-minute metrics on almost any type of data stream and deliver those reports to almost any device — meaning an executive can track performance by region, store or even by item or salesperson, right from a phone or Tablet PC. (Watch a demo video.)
“PushBI provides immediate reporting,” he says. “Before, someone would have to get the information and do analysis. With this, I can see my key metrics anywhere, anytime — and so can my store manager, my warehouse managers, my purchasers.”
With PushBI, data is presented in a graphical format that is easy to understand. Color coding draws immediate attention to problem areas such as stock-outs or lagging sales. For executives, Colyer says the ability to parse information and dial into specifics can really help in keeping tabs on a large organization.
“If I’m visiting stores in New York, I can dial into specific metrics for those stores,” he says. “I can see whether sales are trending up or down. Who are my top salespeople. I can see what’s selling, what’s not, and how that differs from store to store.”
At the store level, Colyer says, this capability can help with replenishment and optimizing shelf space. Store managers can easily communicate with the warehouse, ensuring inventory is available on time. Managers and executives can also track the effects of changes such as special promotions or new signage.
The PushBI application also features integrated IM chat functionality through Microsoft Lync. This allows executives, managers and subject experts such as accountants to discuss issues directly in the context of the application.
“As a senior exec, I can’t be an expert in every single number,” says Colyer. “But I can be connected to experts using Lync. With Lync’s presence information, I can see that my store manager in New York is present and have a quick IM or even start a videoconference.”
Colyer says the emerging market for intelligent systems has created the need for applications such as PushBI that can help companies put new data streams to work. As the market matures, Extended Results is seeing its customers around the world become more creative with the technology. One major global shipping company, for example, is using the product to optimize the offloading of containers at an Australian port.
“This market is still so new, most of our customers have an early adopter mindset and are looking for a competitive edge,” Colyer says. “We can’t wait to see what happens as more customers find new ways to leverage this technology. The ones who are doing this now are definitely getting ahead of the competition.”
