Some Ultra Disappointments for Computer Makers

By NICK WINGFIELD and QUENTIN HARDY

The numbers are in from the PC industry's main scorekeepers -- the research firms IDC and Gartner -- and it looks as if one of the great growth hopes for the industry, ultrabooks, again failed to deliver.

On Wednesday evening, both IDC and Gartner reported that worldwide PC shipments fell 0.1 percent in the second quarter from a year ago, a poor showing for an industry that has been searching for a growth stimulant. As in the past, there are a bunch of factors accounting for the stagnation of the PC business, including consumers who seem far more enamored with getting the latest smartphones and iPads than they are with buying PCs.

Both Gartner and IDC singled out the thin laptop category known as ultrabooks for failing to lift the business. These devices were the PC industry's answer to Apple's MacBook Air, the superslim aluminum notebook that has been a strong seller. Intel, the chip maker whose products power most Windows PCs, plowed a fortune into the development of technologies useful for ultrabooks to encourage its PC customers to make more of the computers.

PC companies then did so, turning out a wide variety of Windows-based ultrabooks with thin cases and shiny metallic shells. But the public hasn't warmed to the devices yet, in part because they remain expensive.

HP Names BBDO as Advertising Agency of Record for PC Business

Topics:Technology and Innovation
PALO ALTO, Calif. -- HP today announced it has named BBDO Worldwide the advertising agency of record (AOR) for its personal computer business.
BBDO will lead the creation of global advertising on behalf of the world-leading computer maker across consumer and commercial product lines. HP will continue to work with regional agencies for translation and implementation.
“BBDO earned our business because they demonstrated keen understanding of our wide-ranging market segments, sound marketing strategy and high-impact ideas,” said Eric Keshin, senior vice president, Marketing, Printing and Personal Systems, HP. “We are confident BBDO’s creative team will help HP build its business around the world.”
In January, HP engaged the management consulting firm Pile and Company to manage a multifaceted review and consideration process for its PC business, which was then called the HP Personal Systems Group (PSG). Decision makers included leaders from HP’s Global Procurement, Digital Marketing and Advertising organizations, as well as members of the HP executive leadership team.
BBDO has already distinguished itself as advertising AOR for HP Global Marketing, and for the HP Imaging and Printing Group (IPG). With the March 21 announcement of the merger of HP IPG and HP PSG, BBDO will now become the advertising AOR for the newly combined HP Printing and Personal Systems group.
BBDO replaces Goodby Silverstein & Partners as the advertising AOR for the HP PC business.

PandaLabs Q1 Report: Four Out Of Five New Malware Samples Are Trojans

PandaLabs Q1 Report: Four Out Of Five New Malware Samples Are Trojans

  • More than 50 percent of all Chinese computers are infected with malware, whereas Sweden is the least malware infected country
  • New “Police Virus” targets users massively
  • The full report is available at http://press.pandasecurity.com/press-room/reports/
PandaLabs, Panda Security’s anti-malware laboratory, today published its Quarterly Report for Q1, analyzing the IT security events and incidents from January through March 2012. In the first quarter of 2012 alone, six million new malware samples were created, in line with the overwhelming figures of previous years.
Malware Statistics
Trojans set a new record for becoming the preferred category for cybercriminals to carry out their information theft, representing 80 percent of all new malware. In 2011, Trojans ‘only’ accounted for 73 percent of all malware. Worms took second place, comprising 9.30 percent of samples, followed by viruses at 6.43 percent. Interestingly, these two malware categories have swapped positions compared to the 2011 Annual Report, where viruses stood at 14.25 percent and worms were third with 8 percent of all circulating malware.
As for the number of infections caused by each malware category, the ranking coincides with that of new samples in circulation. Trojans, worms and viruses again occupied the top three spots. Interestingly, worms only caused eight percent of all infections despite accounting for more than nine percent of all new malware. This is quite noteworthy as worms usually caused many more infections due to their ability to propagate in an automated fashion. In any event, the figures simply corroborate what is well known: Massive worm epidemics have become a thing of the past, and have been replaced by an increasing avalanche of silent Trojans, cyber-criminals’ weapon of choice for their attacks.
China Tops List of Infections per Country
The average number of infected PCs across the globe stands at 35.51 percent, down more than three points compared to 2011, according to Panda Security’s Collective Intelligence data. China once again led this ranking (54.25 percent of infected PCs), followed by Taiwan and Turkey. The list of least infected countries is dominated by European countries -nine out of the first ten places are occupied by them. Japan is the only non-European country among the top ten nations with under thirty percent of computers infected. The top three places are occupied by Sweden, Switzerland and Norway.
Countries with the most malware infections:
The Quarter at a Glance
PandaLabs highlights several top security incidents during Q1 in the report. There was a marked increased in ‘ransomware’ attacks over the past quarter especially due to the so-called ‘Police Virus’. This virus displays messages containing the logos of international law enforcement agencies to trick users into believing that their computers have been locked by the police for visiting inappropriate websites or making illegal downloads. To unlock it, users have to pay a fine, usually in the range of one hundred euros, dollars or British pounds (depending on the target of the attack). However, those messages don’t come from the police, but from the Trojan itself.
The report also covers the latest attacks on Android cell phones, distribution of malware via Facebook, the Megaupload case, cyber-war and the latest activities of the Anonymous and LulzSec hacktivist groups.
According to Luis Corrons, technical director of PandaLabs, ”Although it’s still early in the year, so far what we have seen in 2012 is a continuation of past trends. Cyber-criminals are still trying to steal users’ information and money by any means possible”.
As always, PandaLabs advises all users to keep their computers adequately protected. With this in mind, Panda Security offers its free tool Panda Cloud Antivirus.

AMD Selects HP for Cloud Data Center

Standardizing with HP helps AMD reduce its data-center footprint by more than 50 percent

Topics:Strategic Focus: Cloud, Strategic Focus: Software, Technology and Innovation, Converged Infrastructure
PALO ALTO, Calif. -- HP today announced that AMD (NYSE: AMD) has improved business efficiency and streamlined operations by consolidating its worldwide data centers and standardizing on HP Networking solutions.
AMD’s innovative computing and graphics technologies run a wide range of computing devices – such as personal computers, game consoles and servers – all of which power internet and business operations spanning cloud computing and virtualization environments throughout the world.
With 18 data centers worldwide, AMD recognized the need to consolidate its infrastructure to optimize resources as well as improve power and cooling efficiency. AMD conducted a comprehensive testing and review process of solutions from multiple networking vendors before choosing HP. The HP 12500 Switch Series and HP 5820 Switch Series will be used in AMD’s newest private cloud data center, where the company makes heavy use of virtualization and cluster technologies.
“We were experiencing suboptimal business operations due to infrastructure sprawl,” said Farid Dana, director, IT, Global Infrastructure Services, AMD. “HP Networking’s open, standards-based architecture offered us the flexibility to easily integrate solutions and expand our infrastructure while leveraging existing investments.”
Additionally, AMD deployed HP server solutions, including HP ProLiant BL465c G7 servers with AMD Opteron 6200 Series processors, to help improve the compute power of its internal engineering cloud, which performs up to 40 million engineering simulations per month. The HP server platform supports AMD’s virtualized environment as well as the company’s business applications and services.
Implementing HP Networking and server technologies helped AMD reduce its data-center footprint by more than 50 percent while increasing network capacity and improving performance. AMD plans to upgrade other sites with HP Networking hardware in the near future.
  • AMD also engaged HP Critical Facilities Services (CFS) to build a new data center. HP CFS provides consulting, design and assurance services for building new or retrofitting legacy data centers. Working with HP CFS, AMD designed the data center from the ground up to meet changing business requirements with lower facilities capital and operating costs.
  • More information about HP Networking solutions is available at www.hp.com/networking.
HP’s premier client event, HP Discover, takes place June 4-7 in Las Vegas.
