Charter and Cisco Enter Agreement in Support of Charter's Breakthrough Next-Gen Video Solution
PRESS RELEASE
Charter and Cisco Enter Agreement in Support of Charter's Breakthrough Next-Gen Video Solution
Cisco Will Serve as a Key ‘Worldbox' Supplier Through 2015, including Downloadable Conditional Access System (DCAS) and Digital Rights Management Solutions
LAS VEGAS, Nevada, CES 2015, January 6, 2015 – Cisco and Charter Communications, Inc. announced today that the two companies have entered into a strategic agreement through which Cisco will supply key products in support of Charter's breakthrough next-generation video solution. The products will include Cisco's cloud-based security suite, including downloadable security solution (DCAS) for set-top boxes, and seamless digital rights management (DRM) solution to support video services on a range of IP devices. Cisco will supply a substantial share of Charter's next-generation ‘Worldbox' volume and will continue to supply CableCARD boxes until Charter migrates all current and acquired systems to the downloadable security solution.
The two companies will host a private press and analyst reception today at CES 2015 in Las Vegas to showcase Charter's new solution and Cisco's key contributions for the first time. The breakthrough Worldbox can act as a thin client that can be updated via cloud software and incorporates a cloud-driven user interface (UI) to deliver new features and experiences to Charter subscribers. Charter will also showcase the Spectrum Guide, a new, cloud-based, state-of-the-art user interface that will work on any deployed set-top box in Charter's footprint.
"Cisco shares Charter's vision of the future of network architecture, where our network's intelligence is located in the cloud rather than in devices at the edge," said Tom Rutledge, President and CEO of Charter Communications. "We are excited that Cisco will be a key supplier of the Charter Worldbox, and that their Downloadable Security Solution and Digital Rights Management solutions will be part of Charter's next-generation, cloud-based video solution."
"Cisco greatly values our enduring partnership with Charter," said Cisco chairman and CEO John Chambers. "We are proud to join Charter today to showcase the leading edge IP and cloud-based video solutions they are developing, and the Cisco products at their core. Charter's new video solution, featuring cloud-driven video experiences offered across many devices will be a huge win for Charter subscribers."
Charter expects to deploy downloadable security to its current systems this year and will then continue deployment to acquired systems. The downloadable security solution has been a multi-year effort involving multiple cable vendors. The downloadable security solution is an open solution, which has been ported to multiple vendors' CPE. It interoperates with in-place proprietary conditional access system implementations, facilitating efficient footprint wide rollout across different cable video network architectures. Downloadable security allows current and future vendors worldwide to supply ‘Worldboxes' to Charter. Charter is currently working with vendors towards manufacturing compatible boxes for the retail market as well, with the expectation that these devices will function in other cable systems using downloadable security solution.
Charter will offer both an HD only and an HD-DVR ‘Worldbox' featuring dual IP/QAM capabilities, configurable up to 16 tuners, a DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem, 1 Gig of RAM, high-powered USB to enable future applications, and a terabyte of storage on the HD-DVR. Charter expects to launch its new fully featured cloud based user interface, Spectrum Guide on Worldboxes, as well as on legacy boxes currently deployed within the Charter footprint. The Spectrum Guide features intuitive search and discovery capabilities with attractive graphics and TV and movie poster art that provides customers an enhanced state-of-the-art experience.

With Apple's Siri, a Romance Gone Sour
By NICK BILTON
Late last summer, I was introduced to a new special someone. I wasn't looking to meet this new muse; it all just kind of happened.
We met at an Apple product announcement in Cupertino, Calif. She was helpful, smart and even funny, cracking sarcastic jokes and making me laugh. What more could a guy ask for?
Since then, we have had some major communication issues. She frequently misunderstands what I'm saying. Sometimes she is just unavailable. Often, she responds with the same, repetitive statement.
Her name is Siri.
At first, Siri, the voice-activated digital assistant on Apple iPhones, seemed a little too good to be true. Siri lured me into a relationship promising to help me set up appointments, to gently wake me in the morning for work, and to give me the ability to text someone while I was driving.
It didn't work out that way. "There's something wrong, and I can't answer your questions right now. Please try again in a little while," Siri will say when I ask something. Or: "I'm really sorry about this, but I can't take any requests right now. Please try again in a little while."
She is always polite. But I'm starting to suspect that "I'm really sorry" is just something Siri says to shut me up.
Apple introduced Siri as a beta test, meaning it was still a work in progress. That was unusual for Apple, but the company was counting on it to change the way people searched for information on mobile devices. It wanted a head start. But it doesn't seem ready to change anything yet. Many people I have spoken to have switched Siri off and reverted to the iPhone's voice dictation service (the little microphone next to the keyboard), which is more reliable because it doesn't use Siri's artificial intelligence software.

New IBM Software Transforms the Digital Experience
News release:
New IBM Software Transforms the Digital Experience
Delivers New Interactive Online Experience for 16 Million Tennis Fans on wimbledon.com
ARMONK, NY - 13 Jul 2012: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced new software that helps CMOs and CIOs transform the digital experience for employees, customers and fans across a broad range of mobile devices.
The IBM Intranet Experience Suite pulls together company information and data, personalized content and news, and social media and analytics, enabling employees to connect, collaborate and access information at anytime, from anywhere. (Photo Courtesy of IBM)
The new software brings together the power of social networking, analytics and mobile computing to front office operations and externally to clients, allowing companies to create exceptional Web experiences. As a result, organizations can gain faster insight on customer buying patterns and consumer sentiment allowing them to more quickly reach and engage their audiences.
As part of today's news, IBM is also announcing the completion of a digital transformationproject with the All England Lawn Tennis Club. By visiting the new www.wimbledon.com from a variety of devices including the iPhone, iPad, Android and other tablets, fans can share information, interact with and connect to The Championships as if they were actually there seeing the plays in real-time.
The website also integrates with a new online TV channel, Live @ Wimbledon, alongside IBM’s real time match analysis tool, SlamTracker, bringing the most comprehensive digital experience to consumers.
“Working with IBM, we’ve created a new digital experience that aims to showcase the beauty of Wimbledon to our millions of fans around the world. It allows them to truly engage with the Wimbledon experience as never before," said Mick Desmond, Commercial Director at the All England Lawn Tennis Club. “Visitors can follow the progress of their favorite players, view clips of live matches, view highlights of the day’s action and get scores and results delivered in real-time. It is an increasingly interactive and engaging online experience that draws fans, players and the media in ever-greater numbers.”
With the growing number of mobile devices, social networks and social media tools on the rise, CMOs struggle to reach their audiences. At the same time, CIOs are struggling to provide access to company data on every type of device for a geographically distributed workforce. Given the business realignment between marketing and technology, the CMO and CIO can no longer afford to operate on separate stages. To succeed, they'll have to forge a shared agenda to deliver business results through innovation and efficiency, working together to streamline their technology needs. The convergence of social and mobile is prompting organizations to revisit decades-old website to create exceptional web experiences to reach and engage with their audiences.
Building on these increased demands, IBM is delivering a new Customer Experience Suite giving millions of marketing professionals the power to manage and integrate all types of data on their web sites and then analyze it for deeper insight into customer buying patterns and sentiment. Also delivered today, the new IBM Intranet Experience Suite pulls together company information and data, personalized content and news, and social media and analytics, enabling employees to connect, collaborate and access information at anytime, from anywhere.
At European industrial automation technology manufacturer Omron, employees are connecting knowledge and technical know-how through the organization's Intranet, helping to meet the specific needs of their customers. Omron delivers an exceptional Web experience to its 1,700 European employees through a single communication platform that embeds relevant social data into the daily workflow. Omron has sped knowledge sharing across boundaries and between departments, enabling employees to support customers better and faster.
"The world is changing and is becoming increasingly connected and social," said Michel Min, Head of Strategic Communication & eMarketing, Omron Europe B.V. "Because of this, we know our clients are changing as well, which is why it's increasingly important to ensure our sales teams have the right information at the right time."
Analytics to Help Marketers Engage Audiences
From digital marketing and mobile commerce, to websites and social media, marketers are inundated -- often paralyzed -- by data amassed from consumers via searches, purchase histories, Facebook "likes" and comments on Twitter. Combine that with data about in-store traffic, conversations with call centers and updates from suppliers, today's marketers confront a daily deluge of data waiting to be sifted for nuggets of intelligence they can act upon to boost their business.
By 2017, the CMO will have greater control of the IT budget than the CIO, according to Gartner (1). Marketing budgets will grow 7-8 percent over the next 12 months, which is 2-3 times that of IT budgets. However, despite their growing reliance on technology and their soaring budgets, CMOs readily admit they lack the skills that IT requires. According to the IBM CMO Study, while 79 percent of CMOs expect high levels of complexity in their job over the next five years, only 48 percent feel prepared to deal with it.
Because of this, it's critical for CMOs to not only be aware of and monitor the social conversation, but to truly understand the sentiment and interact one-on-one with that customer. Taking it one step further would be to integrate these conversations directly into the organization's web site, providing one place to both network and shop.
The new IBM Customer Experience Suite provides CMOs with the power to manage and integrate all types of data on their web sites and then analyze it for deeper insight into customer buying patterns and sentiment. Web data has evolved today to include social media, videos, and web-based forms, as well as traditional enterprise data such as financial, customer and order data, and transactions. The software suite pulls together IBM's market-leading enterprise portal, web content management, forms, and enterprise social networking software into a single view.
CIOs Creating Exceptional Intranets To Help Employees Gain Insight from Data Deluge
The new IBM software also helps business leaders extend their corporate intranet to a broad range of mobile devices in an effort to deepen employee collaboration and information sharing.
According to IDC, employees typically see up to a 30 percent increase in productivity using social tools internally to complete their work (2). With unlimited access to any type of information, consumers expect this same level of information availability in their professional lives, in order to work efficiently and reach business goals quickly.
The new IBM Intranet Experience software brings the power of social and analytics capabilities to CIOs and lines of business employees helping organizations innovate and evolve their internal operations and communications. The solution pulls together company information and data, personalized content and news, and social media and analytics, enabling employees to connect, collaborate and access information at anytime, from anywhere.
For example, IBM's new intranet platform provides HR executives and business leaders with software to help employees better engage across networks and business units, and access information from a variety of sources including external and internal news feeds.
Working with IBM and its partner Portico, Omron created an award-winning business intranet, called Ozone internally, helping to create a single-source communication and collaboration platform for all 1,700 European employees. The IBM Intranet Experience Suite integrates with external social media, including Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube, allowing employees to pick and choose which applications they want in their Intranet view. For example, a sales manager can leverage the Cognos software integration to ensure a clear view into monthly sales reports by region, as well as competitive background on new product updates and forecasts.
"It's essential to offer relevant social information in the right business context embedded in employee's daily workflow," continued Min. "By measuring, analyzing and filtering social information, and then injecting those insights to the right people at the right time, real business value can be generated by bringing technical know-how directly to the customer."
Omron has the ambition to connect employees worldwide, with its Ozone intranet being expanded into Asia today. Omron Europe is also testing mobile access for all popular devices including the iPad.

Roxio® Easy VHS to DVD 3 Plus Wins PTPA Winner's Seal of Approval
News release:
Roxio® Easy VHS to DVD 3 Plus Wins PTPA Winner's Seal of Approval
Ottawa, ON - June 05, 2012
Corel today announced that Roxio® Easy VHS to DVD 3 Plus has been awarded the Parent Tested Parent Approved (PTPA)Winner's Seal of Approval.
For any family with precious memories on video tape, Roxio Easy VHS to DVD 3 Plus bridges the gap between old and new by making it simple to preserve and share VHS, Hi8 and V8 in today's digital video formats – whether you're burning a DVD, sharing on YouTube and Facebook, or saving to mobile devices like iPhone.
Roxio Easy VHS to DVD 3 Plus was among many entries from across North America competing to earn the PTPA Seal. Independent parent volunteers evaluate products in their own homes to ensure that PTPA winners are chosen based on merit and consumer experience – not on commercial considerations. As a result, the PTPA Media Seal has quickly gained recognition as an international leader in certifying consumer products for quality, effectiveness and value. Their CEO and founder, Sharon Vinderine has appeared on nearly 50 morning shows as a reliable source for the latest and greatest in family products. The media and parents alike trust the collective opinion that PTPA Media represents.
"When we think about the things that mean the most to us, family memories are always at the top of the list. But despite how important they are, so many of our home-movie video tapes are just sitting on shelves gathering dust. As the tapes degrade and the devices to play them disappear, many families are at risk of losing these precious memories forever," said Matt DiMaria, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Digital Media at Corel. "We're thrilled that the parent testers at PTPA have recognized Roxio Easy VHS to DVD 3 Plus as a valuable tool for preserving and sharing family memories for today's digital lifestyle."
"At PTPA Media, we are proud to play a role in certifying innovative products that families can trust," says Sharon Vinderine, CEO and founder of PTPA Media Inc. "When consumers search for our Seal of Approval on product packaging and web sites, they are essentially searching for validation from their peers. Their peers will have objectively tested and approved these products based on their performance in a real life environment. That type of resource for families is priceless."

IBM Mobile Shopper Provides Instant In-Store Digital Scanning, Checkout Capability for Consumers Using Mobile Phones
News release:
IBM Mobile Shopper Provides Instant In-Store Digital Scanning, Checkout Capability for Consumers Using Mobile Phones
Incorporates Advanced Honeywell Bar-Code Scanning Technology
Armonk, N.Y. - 01 Jun 2012: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced retail technology that allows consumers to scan items into a mobile phone as they shop the aisles, then check themselves out at an IBM self-checkout station.
Designed to help retailers provide a more customized in-store shopping experience for smart phone shoppers, the IBM Mobile Shopper application incorporates Honeywell (NYSE: HON) mobile scanning technology capable of scanning virtually any bar code, no matter what background it is printed on, the direction it faces, or the packaging covering it. The solution currently runs on the Google Android and Apple iOS operating systems.
According to a recent IBM Institute of Business Value study, self checkout is the preferred way to shop for most consumers today, and they are very specific about the way they want to use mobile technology while shopping. More than 50 percent say they want to use a mobile device to scan while shopping, and to do final checkout at a self-checkout station. More than 40 percent want to scan samples and retrieve shopping items for pickup, or have the items delivered directly to their homes.
"Retailers can now deliver a more personalized shopping experience that is less of a chore and more of a convenience for consumers," says John Gaydac, vice president, IBM Retail Store Solutions. "By enabling consumers to scan and check-out a wide variety of products at their own pace, retailers can not only create a more customized shopping environment, but also increase in-store traffic."
The new mobile phone application is powered by IBM ACE Store Integrator software and the newest release of IBM Self-Checkout software, which provides shoppers the same access to digital coupons, loyalty programs and special promotions at self-checkout stations that is traditionally available at fully-staffed point-of-sale checkout lanes.
The IBM Mobile Shopper, or "digital shopping assistant," incorporates Honeywell's high-performance SwiftDecoder Mobile bar code decoding software, one of many patented technologies that have helped secure the company's leadership in camera-based bar code decoding. Among them is the practice of decoding bar code-related information from a real-time video image, such as the display of a smart phone or other mobile device (U.S. patent 6,015,088).
"Honeywell has a long heritage of providing bar code scanning for mission-critical applications where inaccuracy is not an option," said John Waldron, president of Honeywell Scanning & Mobility. "Today, with IBM, we're bringing those capabilities to consumers to help make their shopping trips more efficient and productive."

WPP’s 24/7 Media and Microsoft Announce Digital Advertising Partnership
Press release:
WPP’s 24/7 Media and Microsoft Announce Digital Advertising Partnership
May 23, 2012
Agreement will help strengthen the ad technology offerings of both companies, improving digital ROI for brands and publishers
NEW YORK and REDMOND, Wash. – May 23, 2012 – Today, 24/7 Media, WPP’s marketing technology company, and Microsoft Advertising announced an extensive partnership to support their customers in the rapidly changing digital advertising marketplace. As a result of this agreement, that brings together two of the largest players in the advertising industry, clients of both companies will benefit from markedly enhanced scale, optimization and automation. The global online ad market is estimated to exceed $98 billion in 2012.*
“This is an exciting day for 24/7 Media, WPP and our clients globally,” said David J. Moore, Chairman and CEO of 24/7 Media. “In partnering with Microsoft, one of our largest and most strategic clients, we are creating a very powerful suite of capabilities that rivals any other offering available today in digital marketing.”
“We’re very pleased to be able to strike this partnership with 24/7,” said Rik van der Kooi, Corporate Vice President of Microsoft Advertising. “Our mission is to provide extraordinary experiences for consumers and effective solutions for our digital marketing partners. Marketers are telling us they need to get their hands on premium quality inventory at-scale by reducing friction, which is what this deal will do. And unlocking new demand for publishers’ inventory through our Exchange will similarly create new value in the market.”
The agreement consists of four main components that will help strengthen advertising technology stacks and expand opportunities for the marketer and publisher clients of both WPP and Microsoft Advertising.
Specifically:
- The Microsoft Advertising Exchange will become the exclusive third-party ad exchange offered by Real Media Group, a business unit of 24/7 Media, to its 24/7 Open AdStream clients. Access to and management of the Exchange will be available via the 24/7 Open AdStream user interface and significant integration between the platforms. The arrangement provides 24/7 Open AdStream clients with seamless access to the Microsoft Advertising Exchange, which is designed specifically for the needs of premium publishers.
- The Microsoft Media Network will become the only non-WPP demand source granted programmatic access to Real Media Group’s premium inventory. Marketers and agencies will benefit from having this quality advertising inventory from premium publishers available for purchase in conjunction with Microsoft’s data and ad offerings. At the same time, Real Media Group’s publishers will benefit from the addition of Microsoft’s high-quality advertiser base. Real Media Group may also use the Microsoft Advertising Exchange to provide exchange services to publishers who are part of the 24/7 Access audience activation channel, which has the fifth largest reach in the US and select other markets.
- 24/7 Connect, a powerful new tool that WPP agencies and clients around the world are using to simplify and automate their media planning, will include the full catalog of Microsoft’s ad offerings. In addition, WPP agencies and clients will be able to programmatically create media plans that include Microsoft Advertising offerings. This will enable a richer set of solutions for the advertising needs of WPP agencies and clients, while also providing increased monetization of Microsoft’s publisher partner inventory.
- Microsoft, 24/7 Media, and WPP are also expanding their existing relationship around Microsoft’s Atlas ad server, which is a preferred ad server of WPP. Microsoft and 24/7 Media will work together toward a zero discrepancy solution between Atlas and 24/7 Open AdStream. 24/7 Media will join the Atlas Technology Partner Alliance, supporting the integration between 24/7 Trader, 24/7 Media’s demand side platform used by WPP, and Microsoft’s Atlas ad server.
