IBM Helps Germany's REAL Hypermarkets Personalize Online Coupons for In-Store Shoppers

Press release:

IBM Helps Germany's REAL Hypermarkets Personalize Online Coupons for In-Store Shoppers

Armonk, N.Y. - 30 Jul 2012: Major retail hypermarket chain REAL, part of Metro Group, worked with IBM (NYSE: IBM) to launch a new electronic coupon system throughout its 320 German stores. This first-of-a-kind digital coupon system, developed with IBM Research scientists, enables consumers to use their mobile phones to find and redeem e-coupons as they shop in stores. This delivers a convenient and personalized service to shoppers, even if they left their paper coupons at home.
Smart Phones Tap into the culture of Couponing-page-001
REAL hypermarkets, which sell about 80,000 items, from food to electrical appliances to clothing, already conducts the largest coupon program in Germany through the company's "Payback" program. REAL cites customer loyalty programs such as Payback as an important part of their business strategy in the highly competitive retail market.
REAL's coupon program enables in-store Payback members to use their mobile phones to browse online coupons as they walk through the aisles. Shoppers can choose their favorite coupons from the REAL homepage or a Payback app on their smartphones. In a maximum of 500 milliseconds, the system confirms their choice and transfers an eCoupon to the store's "3V - Value Voucher Validation" coupon system in real time. To redeem the eCoupon, customers display their Payback membership card upon check-out and the transaction is processed automatically.
Flexible, personalized service for consumers
For REAL, the electronic system offers a more personalized view of customers and the option to change coupon distribution in real time. Promotions can respond more flexibly to seasonal changes or fashion fads to appeal to ever-changing consumer tastes.
"In essence, we are simplifying and improving the coupon redemption process," explains Bernd Hasenbank, Head of Point of Sale Solutions at REAL.
"In the era of Big Data, consumers expect a superior retail experience – which puts pressure on retailers to deliver hyper-personalized services," says Falk Nieder, consultant at IBM Global Business Services. "REAL's e-couponing system demonstrates that retailers can deliver timely and customized coupons so that marketing feels more like a welcomed service."
REAL expects that it will be receiving several hundred thousand eCoupon queries and eCoupon redemptions per day at the cash registers of it 320 stores. That is not an easy task for the underlying information technology (IT) architecture with a central server.
The new 3V coupon system at REAL is based on existing IBM solutions at METRO Group, which are compliant with the EPC Information Services Standard (EPCIS) of EPCglobal. The system is based on IBM InfoSphere Traceability Server, a high-performance data storage device, that is able to manage and analyze large amounts of data, integrate master data systems and provide data in real-time for internal and external applications.
About REAL

Navis Deploys Oracle’s Pillar Axiom Storage System To Support Virtualized Engineering and Development Environments

Logistics Technology Leader Optimizes Archive, Disaster Recovery with Oracle’s StorageTek Tape and Storage Archive Manager Software

Redwood Shores, Calif. – July 19, 2012

News Facts

Navis, part of Cargotec Corporation, and the global technology leader for managing the movement of cargo through terminals, has replaced its NetApp storage solutions withOracle’s Pillar Axiom 600 storage systems to support the engineering and development environments for its SPARCS N4 terminal operating system.
Moving to completely virtualize these environments to meet the demands of the business, Navis sought a high performance, scalable tiered storage solution to support both application development and database access.
Following a competitive evaluation, Navis selected Oracle’s Pillar Axiom storage systems over EMC, identifying its Quality of Service (QoS) capability and easy-to-use management capabilities as key factors in its decision.
The Pillar Axiom 600 storage system’s patented Quality of Service (QoS) architecture provides predictable performance and consolidation capabilities that have helped Navis meet ever increasing demands.
Additionally, by leveraging the replication and multi-system management features of the Pillar Axiom 600 storage system, Navis is able to maintain peak performance of its virtual machines, regardless of the types of environments it provisions.
Adding the Pillar Axiom 600 storage system to Navis’ existing Oracle footprint spanningOracle Fusion Middleware, Oracle Database, Oracle VM, and Oracle’s x86 servers, the company is leveraging the benefits of Oracle’s hardware and software engineered together to better serve the needs of its customers.
Navis is using the combination of Oracle’s Sun Storage Archive Manager (SAM) software and Pillar Axiom 600 storage system along with Oracle’s StorageTek tape solutions to automate the management of its data, active to archive, at a significantly lower cost than with disk-only environments.
Oracle’s StorageTek T10000C Tape Drives and Oracle’s StorageTek SL3000 Modular Library System are being employed to build out a robust disaster recovery solution. While the company evaluated other solutions, Navis chose Oracle’s tape drives for their high performance with significantly better ROI.
Navis plans to deploy an additional Pillar Axiom 600 Storage System in its Chennai, India data center, leveraging the Pillar Axiom MaxRep capabilities to replicate between Chennai and its data center in Oakland, Calif.

CUSTOMER SUCCESS: MemorialCare Health System Improves Its Own IT Health

Press release:

CUSTOMER SUCCESS: MemorialCare Health System Improves Its Own IT Health

BMC Software helps major hospital network improve patient satisfaction

HOUSTON, July 16, 2012 – To serve a network of six leading hospitals across southern California, MemorialCare Health System (MHS) relies on highly specialized technology to diagnose and treat patients. For obvious reasons, it’s absolutely necessary that computer systems work flawlessly.
Streamlined IT operations are a key factor in making sure the hospital network runs smoothly. Before selecting BMC Software, MHS could not efficiently manage IT requests from all of its medical facilities. What’s more, the hospital system did not have an automated system to track computer and software assets in real time.
This collective gap in the MHS IT management capability had a direct and profoundly negative effect on customer satisfaction.
“Prior to selecting BMC Software, we had no way of determining the number of IT assets we had. We spent an exorbitant amount of time gathering this information and manually entering it into a database,” explained Terolyn Phinsee, project manager at MHS. “Today, our successful implementation of BMC Track-It! has produced a measurable increase in customer satisfaction, with an overall score of 95 percent for ‘quick response to issue.’”
The Challenge
MHS lacked an efficient method for tracking and assigning help desk requests between hospitals. The company also needed a way to track hospital hardware and software assets in real time, without inundating internal IT resources. Finally, MHS needed to ensure it was compliant with healthcare security regulations such as HIPPA Administrative Safegaurds.
The Solution
MHS reviewed a number of help desk solutions, including the FrontRange HEAT product. The hospital network selected the Track-It! solution from BMC Software for its superior customization capabilities, ease of use, flexibility and automated workflow.
Benefits
The BMC solution was in full production at MHS within eight hours. Once implemented, the organization experienced the following immediate benefits:
  • Increased employee and patient satisfaction with IT service and support
  • Real-time view of all computer and software assets across all six hospitals and the ability to assign work orders to technicians at any site
  • Improved help desk agent workflow to quickly and efficiently solve IT problems and requests
  • Improved compliance to healthcare regulations such as HIPPA

Microsoft Ushers in the 'Era of the Cloud OS'

Press release:

Microsoft Ushers in the 'Era of the Cloud OS'
June 11, 2012
Company shares updates to cloud platform and developer tools.
ORLANDO, Fla. — June 11, 2012 — Today at the 20th annual TechEd North America conference, Microsoft Server and Tools Business President Satya Nadella welcomed a sold-out crowd of more than 10,000 to the era of the cloud operating system (OS) for infrastructure. Nadella described how the cloud OS drives both the modern datacenter and enables the development and management of modern applications, demonstrating how customers can benefit from this transformation with agility, focus and lower costs. He also announced updates to the company’s developer tools and availability of the next release of Windows Intune, the company’s cloud-based solution for PC and mobile device management and security.
Built on decades of experience gleaned from running massive datacenters at scale, Windows Server 2012 is the cloud-optimized server OS for customers of all sizes, and Windows Azure, updated with new services and features, delivers both infrastructure-as-a-service and platform-as-a-service capabilities. Built to complement each other with consistent development, management and identity, they make it easier to create, migrate, deploy and manage applications across public, private and hybrid clouds.
“The operating system does two things: it looks after the hardware, and it provides a platform for applications. The modern datacenter and modern apps put more pressure than ever on infrastructure to become truly cloud-optimized, and that’s where Microsoft builds on our legacy with the OS to help our customers,” Nadella said. “Microsoft is your partner in the transformation of IT because only Microsoft offers the modern, yet familiar, platform that enables you to connect with the cloud on your terms.”
Connecting With the Cloud
Every customer’s path to the cloud will be unique, which is why Microsoft Corp. is optimizing its technologies and tools so customers can easily connect to public, private or hybrid clouds when they are ready. Customers, such as Aflac Inc., ING Direct and Tribune Co., are already working with Microsoft to expand their datacenters into the cloud to scale on demand and help reduce infrastructure costs.
“Delivering content to thousands of users across multiple devices and platforms requires a level of infrastructure that’s easier to manage and more affordable with the cloud,” said Denise Schuster, senior vice president of Digital Innovations for Tribune Company. “We are currently using various methods to deliver content via cloud services, and we’re moving our digital content to Windows Azure to help us find new ways to better deliver a targeted, more personalized experience for our customer base.”
To ease customers’ transitions to the cloud, Microsoft underscored the release candidate of Windows Server 2012, recent updates to Windows Azure and the release of Windows Intune. Together, these new releases make it even easier for customers to leverage one modern operating system across public, private and hybrid clouds and manage a multitude of devices connected to those clouds.
• Windows Server 2012 Release Candidate (RC). Released May 31, 2012, the Windows Server 2012 RC is available for customers to download and evaluate today. Advancements in storage, networking and scalability have been drawn from Microsoft’s experience running public cloud services.
• Windows Azure. Windows Azure is newly updated with preview support for Virtual Machine and Virtual Network, support for Windows and Linux images, and additional support for Java and Python.
• Windows Intune. The next release of Windows Intune, now available athttp://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windowsintune/pc-management.aspx, includes expanded management and security benefits through mobile device management and adds people-centric management capabilities and upgrade rights to the latest version of Windows.
Enabling Developers With Cloud Tools
To streamline and accelerate application development and deployment, Microsoft Team Foundation Service, an application lifecycle management tool hosted on Windows Azure, is now even easier for teams to integrate into their development process. Team Foundation Service features collaboration tools, a code repository, and powerful reporting and traceability tools to help teams more effectively manage software development. Beginning today, a public preview of Team Foundation Service is available at http://tfspreview.com.
To help developers and IT professionals build immersive experiences that scale across devices and the cloud, the company announced that Microsoft LightSwitch, an easy-to-use development tool for quickly building applications, will now render HTML5. Integrating HTML5 into LightSwitch will enable developers using the tool to target any device or platform supporting HTML5.

WAYPOINT SEAFOOD & GRILL IMPLEMENTS MICROS MYRESERVATIONS, OFFERING AN ADDED CONVENIENCE TO CUSTOMERS AND STAFF WITH ONLINE RESERVATIONS

Press release:

WAYPOINT SEAFOOD & GRILL IMPLEMENTS MICROS MYRESERVATIONS, OFFERING AN ADDED CONVENIENCE TO CUSTOMERS AND STAFF WITH ONLINE RESERVATIONS

Columbia, MD – April 30, 2012—MICROS Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:MCRS), a leading provider of information technology solutions for the hospitality and retail industries, is pleased to announce that Waypoint Seafood & Grill, a popular restaurant located in Williamsburg, VA, has successfully implemented the new MICROS myreservations Internet booking engine to allow customers to secure online restaurant reservations directly via the Waypoint Seafood & Grill website.  The Waypoint Seafood & Grill, which specializes in Southern Coastal Cuisine, was the first US site to implement MICROS myreservations to enhance the overall guest experience and create a fully integrated technology environment for its employees and guests.
MICROS myreservations allows Waypoint Seafood & Grill’s customers to view real-time seating availability at the restaurant as well as a two-hour window of openings before and after the selected time in the event that seating is limited.  Once a guest selects the desired time, a confirmation message is emailed to the customer and the reservation is sent directly to the MICROS Table Management System (TMS) without the need for any additional entry at the restaurant.  This capability eliminates disruptions to employee workflow and manual errors, and eliminates the need for any costly third-party reservation service.  The fully integrated solution allows the restaurant to match reservations with real-time table statuses and, once the party is seated, the reservation information is linked from the MICROS TMS to the customer’s check on the MICROS point-of-service (POS) solution.
“Our management team was very familiar with the MICROS Restaurant Enterprise Solution (RES) and MICROS TMS from previous locations.  When we opened this restaurant, we wanted to keep the functionality of those MICROS products as well as add the online booking features of MICROS myreservations,” stated Tina Schadler-Phillips, Owner of Waypoint Seafood & Grill.  “With MICROS myreservations, customers are directed to our website to make reservations rather than a third-party site, allowing us to further drive brand recognition and eliminate the need for additional hardware at our hostess stand.”
“By selecting MICROS myreservations, Waypoint Seafood & Grill is provided the best functionality possible by allowing customers to make reservations through its website which is fully integrated with its other MICROS technology solutions,” stated Ed Chapel, Senior Vice President of MICROS North America Distribution.  “We are pleased that Waypoint Seafood & Grill’s management team embraced the fully integrated MICROS product line and that MICROS myreservations has been very successful for them.”
