Navis, part of Cargotec Corporation, and the global technology leader for managing the movement of cargo through terminals, has replaced its NetApp storage solutions withOracle’s Pillar Axiom 600 storage systems to support the engineering and development environments for its SPARCS N4 terminal operating system.
Moving to completely virtualize these environments to meet the demands of the business, Navis sought a high performance, scalable tiered storage solution to support both application development and database access.
Following a competitive evaluation, Navis selected Oracle’s Pillar Axiom storage systems over EMC, identifying its Quality of Service (QoS) capability and easy-to-use management capabilities as key factors in its decision.
The Pillar Axiom 600 storage system’s patented Quality of Service (QoS) architecture provides predictable performance and consolidation capabilities that have helped Navis meet ever increasing demands.
Additionally, by leveraging the replication and multi-system management features of the Pillar Axiom 600 storage system, Navis is able to maintain peak performance of its virtual machines, regardless of the types of environments it provisions.
Adding the Pillar Axiom 600 storage system to Navis’ existing Oracle footprint spanningOracle Fusion MiddlewareOracle DatabaseOracle VM, and Oracle’s x86 servers, the company is leveraging the benefits of Oracle’s hardware and software engineered together to better serve the needs of its customers.
Navis is using the combination of Oracle’s Sun Storage Archive Manager (SAM) software and Pillar Axiom 600 storage system along with Oracle’s StorageTek tape solutions to automate the management of its data, active to archive, at a significantly lower cost than with disk-only environments.
Oracle’s StorageTek T10000C Tape Drives and Oracle’s StorageTek SL3000 Modular Library System are being employed to build out a robust disaster recovery solution. While the company evaluated other solutions, Navis chose Oracle’s tape drives for their high performance with significantly better ROI.
Navis plans to deploy an additional Pillar Axiom 600 Storage System in its Chennai, India data center, leveraging the Pillar Axiom MaxRep capabilities to replicate between Chennai and its data center in Oakland, Calif.

EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC) today announced that the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa, an internationally recognized leader in medical research, has deployed EMC® Isilon® scale-out NAS to provide a storage environment that enables and empowers its staff to accelerate the advancement of medicine. Like many organizations today, the world-class microbiology and pathology facility needed to address capacity and performance challenges related to Big Data growth while also taking advantage of the opportunities Big Data creates. To transition its storage infrastructure so that it could meet these needs, the Faculty of Medicine turned to scale-out NAS.

  • Enhanced productivity and efficiency—In the past, research was often limited by the amount of storage available to researchers. With EMC Isilon, the Faculty of Medicine can now provide each individual researcher with up to 250 gigabytes of storage capacity, 10 times the previous allocation with the option of adding more at the low, one-time cost of $1 per gigabyte. No longer hindered by storage limitations, researchers can focus on what they do best — pushing the envelope on medical breakthroughs.
  • Increased performance—EMC Isilon performance scaled in lockstep with the Faculty of Medicine's data-intensive storage demands. Performance increased 400% as the Faculty of Medicine scaled out its EMC Isilon infrastructure.
  • Plug and play ease-of-use—Since the Faculty of Medicine's IT team (Medtech) could "set it and forget it" with the EMC Isilon X-series, the 22-person team decreased storage management time and reallocated its resources to focus on more critical or forward-looking services.
  • Improved file access—With EMC Isilon SnapShotIQ, researchers access and recover files from their home, office, iPad or any computer within the Faculty of Medicine from 90 days back, three times longer than the previous time allotment.

Customer Challenges and Solution:

The research wing of the Faculty of Medicine foresaw the need for increased capacity requirements and tasked its Medtech experts to evaluate the department's needs, to anticipate how much storage would be required in future years, and to develop a three-to-five-year plan for storage. After interviewing faculty staff, Medtech consistently found that the biggest needs were for more capacity and the ability to recover data for longer than 30 days back.
Previously, the Faculty of Medicine was using a tier one storage system for all of its research storage needs. The expense of running this system became a burden on the IT department, which had to limit 80 research groups to only 25 gigabytes of data each. Even if researchers wanted to pay more for additional storage, the Faculty of Medicine didn't have the infrastructure to provide it.
The University of Ottawa selected EMC Isilon because of its simple scalability, file recovery, easy provisioning and an architecture that enabled rapid sharing of common resources.
Since implementing EMC Isilon, the Faculty of Medicine has been able to eliminate the storage restraints that had hindered its researchers. Individual researchers are each allotted 250 gigabytes of storage – 10X the previous amount –with the ability to purchase more. Using EMC Isilon SnapShotIQ, researchers can recover and access files from any computer for up to 90 days. The scale-out NAS architecture has also allowed the research department to improve storage performance 400%.
The ability to quickly provision storage within minutes was critical because the Faculty of Medicine's research staff often needs large amounts of storage capacity provided immediately upon request, and EMC Isilon made it easy to meet these demands. The EMC Isilon system also enabled research groups to share terabytes worth of image and video data easily, empowering researchers with information they did not have access to prior to Isilon's deployment. Medtech was able to accomplish these feats and more without adding a dedicated storage person to the staff.

Active/Active data centers enable customers to seamlessly pool two data centers together to enable mobility, availability and collaboration for their data without disruption. This new approach enables Katten to move the processing and storage of running Microsoft SQL Server, Exchange and other mission critical enterprise applications across data centers. Katten relies on VPLEX to relocate data and applications between data centers resulting in zero downtime and minimal engineering resources, dramatically faster delivery of IT resources, and affordable enterprise-class business continuity.
