Voonami Helps Enterprises Transition from Private Cloud to Hybrid Cloud with VMware Network Virtualization
Network Virtualization Helps Simplify the Provisioning and Replication of Complex Application Environments
PALO ALTO, Calif., May 29, 2013 —VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW), the global leader in virtualization and cloud infrastructure, today announced Voonami, Inc., is using VMware network virtualization to help enterprise customers transition from private clouds to hybrid clouds. VMware network virtualization enables Voonami to make applications and networks portable for customers by simplifying the creation of complex environments in one data center. These environments can then be programmatically replicated multiple times in other data centers without having to touch the underlying physical network infrastructure. This capability helps Voonami provide customers greater flexibility in choosing between public, private and hybrid cloud models.
“With our existing infrastructure, moving applications around and deploying new applications can be costly and time consuming,” said Ben Bush, president, Voonami. “To meet the speed and agility requirements of our customers, we deployed network virtualization to decouple the network from the underlying physical infrastructure. Now we can instantly and programmatically create complex multi-tier application architectures. In our experience, there was no other way for us to accomplish this without network virtualization.”
Voonami offers services ranging from traditional co-location services to fully hosted, managed cloud applications. The ability to streamline the setup and replication of application environments has proven to be a key differentiator for the company. Often, customers could not easily replicate their production environment in their staging and development environments. Voonami is now able to create one self-contained environment that uses network virtualization to connect virtualized web servers, app servers, database servers, remote access and VPNs that all tie back into an application. This fully virtualized application environment is then mirrored in three different instances for DevOps, staging and production. This process takes minutes or hours rather than the days and weeks it would take to deploy these scenarios physically.
“With network virtualization, Voonami is delivering enterprise-class architectures at cloud speeds,” said Hatem Naguib, vice president, Cloud Networking and Security, VMware. “This demonstrates the power of network virtualization to fundamentally change how applications and networks are deployed and illustrates how forward-thinking businesses such as Voonami can use network virtualization to capitalize on the cloud opportunity.”

Nuance to Accelerate Its Successful Automotive Business with Acquisition of Tweddle Connect
Nuance Press Release:
Nuance to Accelerate Its Successful Automotive Business with Acquisition of Tweddle Connect
Nuance to Expand Dragon Drive with Voice-Powered Connectivity to Popular Content and Apps for a Safer, Smarter Connected Car
Burlington, MA – May 30, 2013 – Nuance Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: NUAN) today announced it has signed an agreement with Tweddle Group to acquire the Tweddle Connect business. Tweddle Connect is an application and content service delivery platform for in-car infotainment systems, including the acclaimed Toyota Entune and Lexus Enform App Suite. Tweddle Connect aggregates popular third-party applications and content, such as Bing, iHeart Radio, OpenTable and Pandora, and delivers it safely and securely into the driving environment. The combination of Dragon Drive, Nuance’s world-class automotive-grade voice platform, and Tweddle Connect provides automakers with a single, powerful set of services to create branded personal assistant experiences for a safer, smarter connected car.
Already shipping in more than 20 million cars each year, Nuance’s voice, text-to-speech and natural language understanding solutions power Audi, BMW, Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Hyundai, Toyota and many other automakers’ innovations. Nuance’s Dragon Drive voice solution supports a range of functionality like voice dialing, message dictation, navigation, local business search, music search, climate control and more.
The combination of Nuance’s Dragon Drive and Tweddle Connect bridges the current gap between voice, on-board applications, and connected third-party applications and content. Tweddle Connect’s end-to-end service delivery platform will be combined with Dragon Drive’s hybrid embedded-connected voice platform to provide automakers a single, turn-key solution that offers voice, natural language understanding, dialog management, expressive text-to-speech, in-car connectivity, apps, content and dynamic application user authentication – all integrated as part of one holistic offering.
Tweddle Connect provides a communication link between its cloud-based services and the car’s electronic system, as well as an integration layer for smart phone applications. Consumers, dealers, or automakers can manage apps and content through an online secure user portal. Dynamic authentication gives drivers the ability to automatically connect to their favorite apps and services as soon as they enter the car.
This acquisition accelerates and broadens Nuance’s participation in the large and rapidly growing connected car market. According to ABI Research, the number of US connected car subscriptions will grow at a 30% compound annual growth rate from 16 million in 2012 to 53 million in 2017. Automotive News estimates that the global installed base of connected cars will reach 210 million by 2016. At the heart of this rapid growth is strong consumer demand for in-car access to voice-enabled personal assistant capabilities they have come to love on their smartphones, coupled with additional car-specific applications, such as roadside assistance, real-time traffic and location-based services. The JD Power 2012 U.S. Automotive Emerging Technologies Study on consumer demands for in-car technology found that 69% of respondents want natural language voice activation and 68% want wireless connectivity in the car.
The purchase price for the acquisition is approximately $80 million in cash. Nuance expects to close the transaction in Q3 2013; fiscal year 2013 revenues are expected to be immaterial. In Nuance’s fiscal year 2014, the acquisition is expected to generate approximately $25 million in non-GAAP revenue and to add approximately $13 million to cash flow from operations. Nuance will acquire Tweddle Connect’s existing revenue streams, as well as the cash flow and revenue streams associated with ongoing shipments. Nuance expects to drive growth by leveraging existing relationships with the top auto makers and Tier 1 suppliers, as well as Nuance’s operational expertise in managing high-volume hosted services.
“We see explosive growth in the connected car market, and there is clear demand from automakers to deliver safer and more intuitive access to the content and apps that people know and love,” said Michael Thompson, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Nuance Mobile. “The strategic combination of Nuance and Tweddle Connect will greatly improve the ability to bring an important category of content – third party applications and web services – into connected car systems. With this acquisition, Nuance is leveraging an opportunity to increase the value and usability of connected car systems, while accelerating Nuance’s ability to give automakers the elements needed for branded, differentiated connected car experiences.”
Following Nuance’s acquisition of the Tweddle Connect business, the parent company Tweddle Group will continue its more than 60 year history of providing vehicle- and owner-related information and publishing solutions to automotive OEMs and their suppliers.

Mobile Solutions from SAP Help Feeding America Deliver Food to Families in Need

Now Truck Drivers for Distribution Centers Can Track Food Picked Up and Delivered on Mobile Devices, Freeing Resources to Help More Directly Serve 37 Million Food-Insecure Americans
CHICAGO - As part of its mission to help the world run better and improve people's lives, SAP AG(NYSE: SAP) today announced that it has donated mobile technology and professional services toFeeding America, one of the nation's leading hunger relief organizations. This donation will to help speed the flow of food across Feeding America's nationwide network of more than 200 food banks and 61,000 partner agencies.
With SAP® Mobile Platform, truck drivers at food distribution centers across the country can use mobile handheld devices to track their daily inventory versus demand from food pantries and shelters. Armed with this information, drivers can more quickly divvy up food proportionally among their clients and deliver balanced, healthy meals. Improved stock management and route planning frees up resources so Feeding America can direct more energy to helping people in need.
Currently, Feeding America provides food to more than 37 million people through 61,000 food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters in communities across America. They do this by "rescuing" food from retailers that is surplus, near the expiration date or in damaged packages but still edible. Truck drivers are critical to this operation — every day they collect food and bring it to the partner agencies, making sure food goes from grocery stores to families' dinner tables.
In the past, truck drivers had to manually fill in forms to document every item that they picked up at a retailer or delivered to an agency, which then had to be loaded into the Feeding America system for inventory management. Using mobile technology from SAP, Truck drivers can now capture all items electronically on a mobile device that automatically delivers the information directly into the back-end system. Feeding America and SAP worked together using SAP Mobile Platform and its application development tools to create the custom solution. Deploying SAP Mobile Platform will help the organization eliminate time-consuming paperwork and allow Feeding America to devote more time to helping people.
"Our mission is to feed America's hungry through our nationwide network of member food banks, and the technology from SAP will revolutionize the way we rescue and distribute food," said Kevin Lutz, vice president of technology, Feeding America. "The efficiencies we gain from SAP mobile technology translate to more food on the table for hungry families. With every dollar we save, we are able to help secure eight more meals. Using mobile technology helps reduce our operating expenses, which will ultimately enable us to put more trucks on the road that can pick up and deliver more food."
Feeding America started with a pilot program using SAP Mobile Platform to build a custom app at Forgotten Harvest in Detroit, where the depressed automotive industry has resulted in an exponential increase in hungry citizens. The solution is already helping drivers. For example, handheld devices show them what food has already been "pre-loaded" into their trucks before the day starts so they can determine what other pick-ups are required to complete a nutritious meal for agency recipients. Feeding America plans to roll out the app built on SAP Mobile Platform more broadly across its network in the fall of 2013.
"Our collaboration with Feeding America is a perfect example of how mobile technology from SAP helps the world run better and improves people's lives," said Rich Padula, senior vice president, Mobile Strategy, SAP. "This project shows the impact technology can have on the life of one individual. It's the difference between going to bed hungry or not, and for a child that's a world of difference. SAP understands that a sustainable future for our planet relies on using technology innovation to bridge the gaps in society to make sure basic needs are taken care of — and beyond."
For this project, SAP donated custom services, free training and mentoring over the life of the project. The company also included enough software licenses to cover Feeding America's entire network. "SAP really went the extra mile to better enable us to exceed our goals going forward," continued Lutz. "The team designed and developed the solution to our exact specifics, which has enabled us to help feed more people in a shorter amount of time more efficiently. With the technology and mentoring, our drivers now receive and process their orders, record donations and deliveries in the moment on their handheld devices."
SAP has provided technology donations to over 5,000 non-governmental and non-profit organizations. A combination of software, training, and other services from SAP helps recipients improve critical business areas such as performance management, fundraising operations and donor reporting.
