Oracle Linux 7 Now Available

New Release Continues the Tradition of Delivering an Operating Platform to Support Business-Critical Applications Across the Data Center and into the Cloud

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. – July 23, 2014

News Summary

Oracle today introduced Oracle Linux 7, an open source operating platform that gives customers and partners the capabilities, tools, and features they need to innovate, collaborate, and create solutions across traditional, cloud-based, and virtual environments. As with previous releases, Oracle Linux 7 is easy to download, free to distribute, and the only major enterprise Linux distribution that publishes all bug fixes and security errata publicly, providing more flexibility and choice than other commercial Linux distributions. With extensive testing for demanding workloads such as Oracle Database, a flexible free-to-use and paid support model, and strong uptake, Oracle Linux is the best general-purpose open source operating platform for the modern data center.

News Facts

Oracle Linux 7 is generally available today.
This release builds on Oracle’s approach to providing support for emerging technologies, such as OpenStack, while delivering the latest Linux innovations, tools, and features customers and partners need to deliver enterprise-grade solutions for the modern data center.
Oracle Linux 7 features include XFS, Btrfs, Linux Containers (LXC), DTrace, Ksplice, Xen enhancements, and the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Release 3.
Available for download from Oracle Software Delivery Cloud, Oracle Linux 7 is free to download and distribute. All bug fixes and security errata are published to Oracle’s public yum servers, allowing customers to install the same code across all their deployments, with or without a subscription, and creating a simple migration path from free to paid. No reinstalls are required.
Oracle Linux is a general-purpose operating system designed to run any Linux application and provides an ideal platform for third-party solutions, giving partners and customers the freedom to choose the solution they need to meet their business objectives.
Oracle Linux provides the performance and reliability to support business-critical workloads such as Oracle Database 12c and is used by all the x86-based Oracle engineered systems.
More than 12,000 customers have selected Oracle Linux Support, which offers low-cost enterprise-class support with 24/7 access in 145 countries worldwide, premier backports, additional management tools, cluster software, indemnification, and more.
Oracle Linux is the only Linux distribution that provides production support for zero-downtime updates with Ksplice. Ksplice allows customers to keep their systems secure by providing updates without the need to reboot and has been providing updates for production systems for more than seven years, delivering more than 1 million patches. It is also used to provide diagnostics on production servers, with debug kernels that can be applied and removed without restart. Ksplice is included with all Oracle Linux Premier Support subscriptions.
Oracle Linux 7 provides a 10-year production lifecycle; those with Oracle Linux Support subscriptions receive lifetime support as well. Customers using the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel Release 3 also have access to features such as Btrfs, DTrace, and Linux Containers (LXC) across multiple major releases (Oracle Linux 6.4 and later), allowing them time to plan their upgrade.

Oracle Linux allows users to benefit from an open approach for emerging technologies, like OpenStack, and allows them to meet the performance and reliability requirements of the modern data center.”
“With the growing Oracle install base, we’ve been working closely with Oracle to strengthen collaboration between Lenovo solutions and Oracle Linux and Oracle VM,” said Darrel Ward, vice president and general manager, Enterprise Product Group, Lenovo. “Our customers benefit from the flexibility and performance Oracle Linux provides, allowing us to achieve the best low-cost infrastructure solution for SMB and midsize enterprises.”
“Many customers today are standardizing their server deployments, using consistent hardware and operating system layers. A more consistent and optimized foundation streamlines support and manageability for a wide variety of business workloads, ranging from database and commercial applications to infrastructure and web-serving tasks,” said Al Gillen, Program VP, Servers and System Software, IDC. “Oracle starts with the mainline Linux code base, like all other Linux distribution providers. But the company then integrates value-added technologies such as Ksplice and DTrace with the Linux kernel to give customers a product optimized for commercial deployments that demand performance and reliability. This gives Oracle both a competitive story and a measurable differentiation."
“OpenStack offers customers a reliable software platform for mission-critical, scalable clouds without the lock-in,” said Boris Renski, Co-Founder and CMO, Mirantis. “Oracle Linux 7 is an ideal operating system for OpenStack not only for its technical capabilities but because of its support for any OpenStack distribution, allowing organizations to build private or public clouds using the technology of their choosing.”
“Microsoft congratulates Oracle on its release of Oracle Linux 7. Since June 2013, Microsoft and Oracle have collaborated to help customers embrace cloud computing by providing greater choice and flexibility in how to deploy Oracle software,” said Jason Zander, corporate vice president, Microsoft Azure. “We recently added Oracle Linux to the list of Hyper-V guest OS’s for Windows Server and Microsoft Azure and we look forward to offering this latest release in Microsoft Azure.”
