Tips for Creating a Better Sitemap for Your Company Web Site

A sitemap is, perhaps, the most under-appreciated part of a website. As the internet integrates with our lives, it’s become nothing short of second nature for us to navigate across web pages — until we land on one with a low-quality or illogical sitemap design. A poorly designed sitemap makes it nearly impossible to find any important information and can be enough to send potential customers away.

International Internet Day: A great network targeted by cybercriminals

Nearly half a century ago, history was made with the ‘successful’ transmission of data between two computers in California. The letters ‘lo’ were sent – it should have been the world ‘login’, but that’s a moot point – establishing the basis of what we today refer to as the internet.
Originally used by the military and universities to communicate, it wasn’t long before everyone could see the benefits of this network. By the late 1980s, governments, businesses and the general public were increasingly connecting their computers all across the world.

Nude celebrity photo hacker sentenced to 18 months in prison

Whether you chose to call it “Celebgate” or refer to it by the rather crude moniker of “The Fappening”, there’s no doubt that the leaking on the internet of private nude photographs of dozens of Hollywood stars was one of the biggest stories of 2014.
At least 50 celebrity Apple iCloud accounts and 72 Gmail inboxes were broken into by 36-year old Ryan Collins, from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, whose victims included Jennifer Lawrence, Kirsten Dunst, Avril Lavigne, Kate Hudson, and Rihanna.

The Hive Mind: When IoT devices go rogue

The Internet of Things (IoT) has been referred to by so many different names in the past year. The Internet of Terror, the Internet of Trash and a few other catchy monikers to account for the large amount of vulnerabilities present in new devices that are increasingly present in many homes.
Things like smart thermostats, internet camera devices, internet enabled refrigerators and smart washing machines fall into the IoT category. These devices, while presenting a multitude of functionality for controlling various mundane aspects of everyday life, such as locking your front door and turning off appliances in your home, also offer criminals a new attack platform: your appliances.

More Benefits to Using Cloud Services for Your Small Business

In my last company, I ran a mail-order technical software company which needed a processing system to accommodate our growth. At the time, the upfront investment was $100,000 in hardware, a dedicated IT person, and a six-month migration process. Unfortunately, after spending this time and money, there was no guarantee that it would work for the company.
Fifteen years later, cloud based tools have changed everything and companies have come full circle by utilizing the computing power of data in the cloud. Cloud-based tools allow small business owners to match monthly expenses to incoming revenue. This is critical since many businesses get in early trouble when their upfront capital investments and fixed expenses are too high for their current level of sales. These big investments become disastrous for a small company and take capital that needs to go toward their growth.

In a series of new ads from Sprint, which will first launch on TV and later in digital, Sprint takes a tongue in cheek look at a visibly distraught farce of a team of Verizon head honchos as they come face to face with the reality of why consumers are switching to Sprint:

  • 50% off --Sprint will save customers 50% off the price of most Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile standard rate plans1;
  • Unlimited Freedom – Customers can get one line of unlimited talk, text and data for $60 – Verizon doesn’t even offer unlimited2;
  • Network -- It’s 2016, and all networks perform well…in fact, Sprint’s network reliabilityperforms within 1% of Verizon3!

SBI SECURITIES Works with IBM to Test Blockchain Technology for Bond Trading Platform

From IBM:

SBI SECURITIES Works with IBM to Test Blockchain Technology for Bond Trading Platform

Uses Hyperledger Fabric to evaluate cycle of bond trading, more efficient and automated operations, and cost reduction of infrastructures
TOKYO - 21 Oct 2016: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced SBI SECURITIES is testing the potential of blockchain technology for a new type of bond trading system. Working in collaboration with IBM, SBI SECURITIES intends to make blockchain technology for securities operations commercially available in the future.
SBI SECURITIES intends to verify the potential of applying blockchain technology to bond trading operations, scrutinize barriers or complexity in using the technology for its operations, and prepare to apply the technology to actual operations. Using the Hyperledger Fabric, SBI SECURITIES will test the:
  • entire product cycle of registering a bond until its reimbursement;
  • improved efficiency and automation of operations by sharing databases;
  • possibility of reduced infrastructure costs by sharing among the parties involved;
  • possibility of substituting the existing operational processes;
  • evaluation of blockchain technology for securities operations and systems.
“This test aims to scrutinize barriers or complexity for practical use, develop a plan for deployment, and accumulate knowledge through applying blockchain technology to our products,” said Hiroyuki Ogawa, Executive Officer, SBI SECURITIES. “Adopting the Hyperledger Fabric, an open technology platform, and working together with IBM Japan, the leader in this area, we expect that this verification test will speed the rate of adoption of blockchain technology in the financial trading area.”
A recent IBM study “Blockchain Rewires Financial Markets: Trailblazers Take the Lead1,” found that Trailblazers, or early adopters, identified equity and debt issuance as one of four areas that should benefit most from the process improvements introduced by blockchain technology. Asked where blockchains would best open up new transformational business models, Trailblazers named: equity and debt issuance (86 percent), clearing and settlements (82 percent), and wholesale payments (82 percent). A concentration of pilots in these areas is one indication that the financial markets industry may have been attracted first to those activities that may deliver significant business value whilst not subject to great regulatory complexity.
“As an innovative technology, blockchain has the potential to revolutionize ways businesses work together with their ecosystem of trading partners. The technology establishes accountability and transparency while streamlining business processes,” said Takeshi Fukuda, Director, IBM Research - Tokyo. "IBM is driving an open source, open standards blockchain fabric and community through the Hyperledger Project, and leverages this technology to transform businesses in various industries. We are delighted to work with SBI SECURITIES to create innovative solutions for financial industry. "
IBM Japan will support SBI SECURITIES by providing access to its global resources including IBM Bluemix Garage for Blockchain in Tokyo, IBM Consulting Services and IBM Research expertise in Japan.
IBM is rapidly expanding its blockchain consulting services and capabilities and actively working with clients to understand what it takes to make blockchain ready for business. Through its open source contributions and resources for blockchain software developers, IBM is advancing the science of blockchain, helping to remove complexity, and making it more accessible and open. Financial services, supply chains, IoT, risk management, digital rights management and healthcare are some of the areas that are poised for dramatic change using blockchain networks.

IBM Receives Cloud Company of the Year Award from Frost & Sullivan

Award highlights IBM’s ability to deliver a complete set of cloud services enabling customers to build out their hybrid cloud environments
ARMONK, N.Y. - 20 Oct 2016: IBM (NYSE: IBM) announced today that it has received the 2016 Cloud Company of the Year Award from leading independent technology market research firm Frost & Sullivan. The Award acknowledges IBM’s market leadership in delivering a complete and fully integrated stack of cloud services including IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS.
Particularly important to CIOs and IT managers, Frost & Sullivan highlights IBM’s ability to support hybrid environments via the company’s extensive portfolio of connectivity tools and capabilities that allow enterprises to easily create, deploy, and manage a flexible range of applications and microservices.
“This award recognizes the extraordinary range and depth of IBM’s cloud services portfolio,” said Don Boulia, VP of Cloud Strategy and Portfolio Management at IBM. “IBM Cloud provides clients with flexibility and choice when embracing hybrid solutions. They can continue driving value from their existing investments, while also gaining access to public, scalable infrastructure and services across our global footprint of data centers, including IBM Watson.”
According to Lynda Stadtmueller, Vice President of Cloud Services, Stratecast|Frost & Sullivan, “IBM’s cloud platform supports the concept of ‘hybrid integration’—that is, a hybrid IT environment in which disparate applications and data are linked via a comprehensive integration platform, allowing the apps to share common management functionality and control.” These capabilities enable customers to leverage Watson and analytics functionality made available through application programming interfaces (APIs) on Bluemix.
Stadtmueller also commented on the economic benefits of IBM Cloud, noting, “IBM Cloud offers a price-performance advantage over competitors due to its infrastructure configurations and service parameters—including a bare metal server option; single-tenant (private) compute and storage options; granular capacity selections for processing, memory, and network for public cloud units; and all-included technical support.”
Competitors in the cloud market do not offer such a broad portfolio of integrated infrastructure, software, and platform solutions, according to Frost & Sullivan.
win the Frost & Sullivan Company of the Year Award a company must demonstrate excellence in growth, innovation, and leadership. This kind of excellence typically translates into superior performance in three key areas: demand generation, brand development, and competitive positioning. These areas serve as the foundation of a company’s future success and prepare it to deliver on the two criteria that define the Company of the Year Award—Visionary Innovation & Performance and Customer Impact.

This recognition of IBM's thought leadership is a result of IBM's ongoing commitment to provide its clients with insight on issues of industry dynamics and business transformation.
