Red Hat Recognizes Student, Itamar Reis Peixoto, for Contributions to Fedora and Open Source Software
RALEIGH
NC, Global, May 29, 2012The Fedora Project Names Recipient of 2012 Fedora Scholarship
Red Hat, Inc. (NYSE: RHT), the world’s leading provider of open source solutions, today announced the Fedora Project, a Red Hat sponsored and community-supported open source collaboration, has named Itamar Reis Peixoto as the recipient of the 2012 Fedora Scholarship. Now in its fifth year, the Fedora Scholarship recognizes college and university-bound students across the globe for their contributions to free software and the Fedora Project. Peixoto was chosen due to his work in various areas of the Fedora Project, including packaging, participating as a Fedora Ambassador, and helping the free-media team promote broader availability of Fedora.
Fedora is built by a worldwide community of people, and anyone is able to join and contribute across multiple functions including content writers, designers and marketers to translators, web developers and system administrators. Fedora and Red Hat are committed to fostering the talent of young contributors. They encourage students to gain hands-on experience with open source software and to lead in the creation and spread of free code and content.
“We are delighted to award the 2012 Fedora Scholarship to Itamar this year,” said Robyn Bergeron, Fedora Project Leader at Red Hat. “His contributions as a Fedora Ambassador and as a packager are immensely valuable to the Fedora community. We thank Itamar for his numerous contributions and look forward to his continued work with Fedora as he attends university and pursues his degree. The Fedora Project strives to advance the state of free and open source software. Our ability to further our goals by enabling our next-generation technologists to pursue higher education gives us great pride.”
Peixoto has been using Linux since 1999 and has used Fedora since version 1. His first contributed package to Fedora was the “ifstat” package in 2008. His future goals include teaching computer skills, specifically Linux, to children.
“My plan is to teach Linux [to] kids. If you show the way for children, they will keep walking, and for me, Linux is the correct way to walk,” said Peixoto.
The Fedora Scholarship program furthers Red Hat and the Fedora Project’s commitment to help develop and foster emerging talent in the field of open source software. Evaluation criteria include the originality and functionality of the applicant’s contributions to Fedora and other free software projects, references provided by Fedora community members, the amount of time the applicant has been contributing to Fedora and other free software projects, and the overall caliber of the application. Recipients receive $2,000 USD annually for each of up to four years they attend a college or university. In addition, funding for travel expenses is provided during each scholarship year for attendance to a Fedora Users and Developers Conference (FUDCon) in the recipient’s region.
Previous winners of the Fedora Scholarship include Ricky Elrod, who remains very active in the Fedora community and has recently accepted an internship position on the Fedora Engineering Team at Red Hat.
The 2013 application window will open in fall 2012. For more information, visithttp://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Scholarship.
