City of Sacramento Transforms Legislative Processes and Improves Public Service with EMC Documentum xCP

EMC Press Release
City of Sacramento Transforms Legislative Processes and Improves Public Service with EMC Documentum xCP
Saves $500,000 Annually in Operational Costs and Tens of Thousands of Staff Hours a Year; Solution Powers Legislative Document Review; Improves Citizen Service and Accessibility
HOPKINTON, Mass - July 23, 2012
EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC) today announced that the City of Sacramento, Calif. has transformed its legislative process with EMC® Documentum® xCP, an integrated platform for building dynamic business solutions and an action engine for Big Data. As part of the transformation, the City responded to City Council directives by re-engineering its legislative review process with an EMC solution featuring advanced business process management (BPM), enterprise content management (ECM), intelligent capture and records management capabilities. With Documentum xCP, the City has saved money and increased visibility, efficiency and accessibility to the public.

Customer Benefits:

  • Significant Cost Savings via Paperless Environment – The City significantly  reduced operational costs and its carbon footprint by eliminating paper filing systems, off-site storage, and processes which resulted in over $500,000 savings in a year.
  • Increased Visibility – Established Documentum xCP as the foundation for the City's Automated Legislative Document Review System, providing a collaborative environment with full audit trail of all process activities and enhancing transparency across all City departments. Legislative documents such as Council materials are delivered digitally with enhanced navigation and are publically accessible on the City's website within hours of being finalized.
  • Increased Productivity and Operational Efficiency – By automating critical business processes including Legislative Document Review and Public Record Act requests, the City has increased agility and saved tens of thousands of staff hours a year associated with searching, printing, and inter-office approvals. Previous manual paper processes prevented efficient collaboration and was prone to errors.

Customer Challenges and Solution:

Today's global economy and citizen service priorities have required government agencies like the City of Sacramento to provide "full service" visibility. Citizens want to interact with their government in more open and direct ways, creating new opportunities and challenges for elected and public-serving officials. To address these demands, Sacramento Mayor and Council Member directives enhance efficiency, transparency and accountability across all levels of city government.
In deploying Documentum xCP, the City established systems to better manage processes throughout the city with consistent auditable information. The legislative review process, automated critical business processes and document repository also provided greater accessibility of information to citizens. The countless staff hours saved by electronically preparing, reviewing, distributing, tracking, and approving documents are now directed toward other public services. Documentum xCP also includes document retention services to configure disposition policies across all content types to meet compliance requirements and save storage costs.

Customer Quote:

Shirley Concolino, City Clerk, City of Sacramento
"We are a technology driven organization and committed to providing quality public service. New EMC NetWorker 8.0 Accelerates Backup Transformation

EMC Press Release

EMC Enables State of Michigan’s Transformation to IT-as-a-Service

EMC Press Release
EMC Enables State of Michigan’s Transformation to IT-as-a-Service
Delivers Michigan’s Citizens With “One-Stop Shopping Experience” for Online Services
HOPKINTON, Mass. - July 10, 2012
EMC Corporation (NYSE:EMC) today announced that the State of Michigan's IT organization is using EMC storage, software and professional services to further transform how IT services are delivered to agencies and residents. The State of Michigan has always been responsive to individual agency requests - but a new IT-as-a-Service (ITaaS) model will enable even better partnership with agencies to identify their needs and provide service catalogs with defined rate structures that make it easier for agencies to "shop" for services. As a result, EMC is helping the State of Michigan provide even greater responsiveness to the fast-changing needs of its agencies and citizens, improving the quality of online services for Michigan residents and dramatically reducing IT capital and operational expenditures.

Customer Benefits:

  • Improved Performance—The State has increased the performance of its critical Human Services application by 20%, improving service to users while extending the value of its storage investments.
  • Better Service Quality—As a result of its IT transformation, the State's IT organization is able to offer a growing array of services online, such as motor vehicle registration and child support services, providing citizens with a convenient one-stop shopping experience.
  • Increased Flexibility—The State is now able to partner with agencies to identify their needs and provide service catalogs with defined rate structures that make it easier for agencies to shop for services with its new IT-as-a-Service model.

Customer Challenges and Solution:

Looking to endure the challenging economic conditions in the best way possible, the State of Michigan's departments experienced deep budget cuts and made the difficult decision to reduce its staff through attrition and retirements despite seeing its IT storage environment grow 25% annually over the past five years. At the same time, demand for government services was increasing dramatically. The State's data center resources were overextended, and its IT staff was spending nearly all of their time on installations and support instead of developing new services.
To transform the way IT services are delivered and how those IT services support the state's agencies, the State created a Virtual Center of Excellence (VCOE) built on EMC technologies. The VCOE serves more than a dozen agencies with IT-as-a-Service offerings ranging from motor vehicle registration and driver licensing to unemployment insurance and child support services. By leveraging EMC technologies and services, the State is achieving greater agility in meeting the growing needs of agencies and citizens while improving quality of new online services for agencies and Michigan residents.
The State standardized on EMC technologies including EMC VMAX® storage that is configured with Fully Automated Storage Tiering for Virtual Pools (FAST VP) and data-at-rest encryption (DARE). The State uses EMC RecoverPoint™ remote data protection solution for disaster recovery, as well as EMC Data Domain® for backup and recovery. The virtualization environment includes VMware virtualization and cloud infrastructure solutions including vSphere server virtualization with vCenter Site Recovery Manager and vCloud Director, as well as Citrix XenApp. EMC Global Services was engaged to help implement the virtualized infrastructure and educate internal customers on the value of VCOE services.

Customer Quotes:

On its IT Transformation:
Vern Klassen, Director of Technical Services, State of Michigan
"We are creating a much more satisfying, one-stop shopping experience for our citizens. Residents can now renew their driver's license, register to vote or even start a new business through the convenience of a web portal. We've eliminated the inconvenience of waiting in long lines and making multiple trips to different offices."
"Since adopting virtualization and automation, we don't need as many server administrators, so we're shifting those individuals into more service-oriented, customer-focused roles. We're becoming better marketers of our services and operating more like a business, which is essential to competing with external service providers."
"We've developed operating-level agreements to assure agencies of improved service uptime and faster response to trouble tickets. A key part of our transformation is driving better metrics around our services. The agencies more accurately know what to expect and we are far more accountable."
On its Storage Infrastructure:
Rick Hoffman, Storage Manager, State of Michigan
"Because we've become more efficient by virtualizing, consolidating and deploying deduplication, the number of people to support our systems has remained unchanged even though our storage has grown by 25% annually over the past five years. With EMC technologies, we are able to deliver tiered levels of availability and performance that match the performance and cost requirements from each agency."
"Not only are we meeting the service demands of our clients, but able to get more horsepower from our storage investments and ultimately save on long-term expenditures. For example, EMC's FAST VP and FAST Cache has increased the performance of our critical Human Services application by 20%."

IBM Accelerates Business from Supply to Demand with New Cloud Offerings For Smarter Commerce

Press release:

IBM Accelerates Business from Supply to Demand with New Cloud Offerings For Smarter Commerce

IBM Commerce on Cloud; First Enterprise e-Commerce Offering to Boost Marketing, Sales, Customer Service
MADRID - 22 May 2012: At the Smarter Commerce Global Summit, IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced new software designed to improve data sharing and automate complex marketing and supply chain processes in the cloud. As a result, marketers can improve customer service, increase marketing effectiveness and reduce operational costs.
The new offerings leverage IBM’s Cloud expertise and cloud collaboration networks to accelerate the flow of business-to-consumer transactions by automating and synchronizing supply and demand engines. IBM manages massive amounts of data and client transactions in cloud environments, including more than $100 billion in commerce transactions a year and 4.5 million daily client transactions.
Building on these extensive capabilities, IBM is introducing IBM Commerce on Cloud, the industry’s first integrated enterprise class e-commerce solution in the cloud that spans marketing, selling and fulfillment. Designed to help chief marketing officers (CMOs) and e-commerce executives quickly set up and maintain an on-line storefront, it also helps companies of all sizes deploy the same customer digital buying experience as the most advanced retail brands in the world.
IBM Commerce on Cloud is an integrated platform for generating customer interest and then offering, selling, transacting and fulfilling orders in the cloud. It offers companies the benefits of cloud economies, such as low up front capital investment, pay-for-use models, and instant and ongoing scalability, to businesses of all sizes. While purchase motivations are different for B2B and B2C companies, their sales and marketing programs are becoming virtually identical.
“Accelerating commerce on the Cloud is a dramatic step forward in enabling companies to transform their business operations,” said Craig Hayman, general manager, IBM Industry Solutions. “Companies of all sizes can now deliver a better client experience by providing personalized marketing, selling the way customers want to buy, and delivering products through a supply chain that’s prepared for the unpredictable.”
Smarter Commerce helps organizations that are struggling to meet the rising consumer demands brought upon by rapidly changing digital marketplace, automate their buying, marketing, selling and service processes.
In addition to IBM Commerce on Cloud, IBM also has enhanced several of its on-cloud collaboration networks to accelerate collaboration and digital information sharing across demand and supply processes to offset the unpredictable nature of commerce.
To improve retailer-consumer packaged goods collaboration and execution, IBM is introducing new pricing and trade promotion collaboration capabilities for DemandTec. This will allow a network of more than 15,000 members such as ConAgra Foods and PETCO to share information to improve merchandising and marketing plans, enabling better sales forecasts, lowering process inefficiencies and costs.
To help companies more effectively collaborate on marketing activities, IBM is offering a new certified Digital Data Exchange Partner program which allows marketers to more effectively manage their marketing, promotions and customer behavioral analytics. Marketers can gain an integrated view of information being developed across ad networks, survey vendors, testing vendors, and email service providers to gain insights and better execute their marketing programs and services. The exchange also includes a “gold tag” approach designed to ensure that analytics and marketing partners are all operating off of the same, relevant data.
With the Digital Data Exchange partner program, IBM is allowing retailers and third party digital marketing providers to relay behavioral data to analyze and enhance specific processes and improve the customer experience. The program supports new categories for visitor experience management, digital marketing, retargeting, voice of the consumer surveys and search marketing. For example, a major financial services firm could extend their digital marketing ecosystem of tools and solutions within minutes instead of days or weeks by adding online surveys to better understand their site visitors or their retargeting capabilities for a second chance at converting prospects, among other benefits.
To expedite supply chain processes, IBM is making it easier and faster to access, share and process information in real time, especially in emerging markets where growth rates are highest. IBM B2B Cloud Services is currently available across a community of 300,000 trading entities and more than 90 public and private networks, is now available in 34 new countries, including Australia, Brazil, India, New Zealand and all the Central and Eastern European countries.
Stronger supply chain collaboration brings a host of benefits. Via a secure connections to IBM B2B Cloud Services, Lenovo built a unified foundation to connect and collaborate with a broad ecosystem of customers and partners. This capability enabled the company to cut annual costs by improving freight and inventory management, reduce time to onboard a partner and increase visibility into complex supply chain relationships.

Cisco Supports Chunghwa Telecom Cloud Service Optimizing Cloud Applications and Expanding Cloud Business Opportunities

PRESS RELEASE

Cisco Supports Chunghwa Telecom Cloud Service Optimizing Cloud Applications and Expanding Cloud Business Opportunities

Enhances Chunghwa Telecom ‘hicloud' Cloud Server Service with Cisco's Unified Data Center Architecture

TAIWAN, May 14, 2012 – Cisco today announced that Chunghwa Telecom, a leading cloud service provider in Taiwan, enhanced its ‘hicloud' Cloud Server Service with the deployment of the Cisco® Unified Data Centerarchitecture. This offers virtual server computing services through a stable, highly secure and reliable network platform, helping enterprises improve IT system and facility utilization, and swiftly and flexibly providing computing resources for enterprises, effectively paving the way for cloud business opportunities.
In the inaugural Cisco Global Cloud Index (2010-2015), Cisco estimates global cloud computing traffic will grow 12-fold from 130 exabytes to reach a total of 1.6 zettabytes annually by 2015 – the equivalent of 22 trillion hours of streaming music or 1.6 trillion hours of online high-definition (HD) video streaming. The study also predicts that over 50 percent of computing workloads in data centers will be cloud-based by 2014. Cloud is becoming a critical element for the future of IT, and in addressing today's business demands for agility, continuity and security amid a dynamic economic ecosystem.
Cisco Unified Data Center is a key component of Cisco CloudVerse®, a framework that combines the foundational elements needed to enable organizations to build, manage and connect public, private and hybrid clouds. Cisco CloudVerse combines these key cloud elements – Unified Data Center, Cloud Intelligent Network, and Cloud Applications and Services – enabling businesses to realize all of the benefits of clouds: improved agility, better economics, enhanced security and a dynamic, assured experience. It responds to the prevalence of cloud computing in a world of many clouds.
"With cloud computing data center technologies, not only can enterprises reduce the repeat purchase of IT facilities, but they can also take advantage of virtualization to respond swiftly to market needs, simplify management procedures and go green by improving resource utilization. Cisco is very pleased to support far-sighted Chunghwa Telecom in building a high-tech next-generation cloud data center with high scalability and greater computing capacity by deploying Cisco's standardized and high-performance Unified Data Center architecture. This will enable Chunghwa Telecom to deliver highly secure and stable ‘hicloud' Cloud Server Services to their customers, setting a new paradigm for the use of the cloud platform," said Frank Wu, general manager, Cisco Taiwan.
Chunghwa Telecom's ‘hicloud' Cloud Server Service is officially launched, providing virtual server space, cloud data security and protection, applications for smart devices and program access platforms, and more. Chunghwa Telecom indicated that the cloud computing plan has two objectives. The first is to offer end-to-end cloud services, to develop new services and to create a cloud service market. The second is to deliver cloud solutions for private cloud, public cloud and government cloud. The company's ‘hicloud' service provides an agile and highly secure IT cloud platform and infrastructure, together with affordable and highly scalable solutions, allowing enterprises to deploy cloud computing with ease.
This deployment of Cisco Unified Data Center architecture by Chunghwa Telecom comprises the Cisco Unified Computing System™ and Cisco Nexus® switches. The architecture as a whole provides a number of powerful features and multiple values:
  • Effective use of resources: Saves server resource usage and equipment maintenance costs, reduces cabling and manpower costs, solves problems of resource and deployment wastage, and enables centralized network resource usage while lowering operating costs.
  • Improved instant responsiveness: Demand for resource access is no longer restricted by location or time; dispersed employees and partners can access resources at any time, addressing employees' concerns about synchronization and collaboration.
  • Highly flexible system deployment: High scalability for enterprises to expand or shrink virtual and physical facilities based on their business needs; high compatibility can also protect enterprises' original IT investment.
  • Highly secure information: Cisco products provide comprehensive integrated data security and protection, allowing enterprises to transmit data through high-quality network cloud architecture, while effectively controlling access to information and facilitating traffic management.
In order to help Chunghwa Telecom import and deploy cloud architecture, Cisco has further helped conduct various technology tests to ensure the service quality of ‘hicloud':
  • Rapid deployment of server: Conducted rapid deployment of physical host based on the required system resources;
  • Rapid deployment of virtual host: Achieved a rapid deployment of 80 hosts within 10 minutes;
  • Rapid provisioning of system resources: Swiftly adjusted cloud resources to address dynamic requirements according to business needs;
  • Server failover: No additional deployment of network or storage devices required when the host switches system service;
  • Storage architecture with no single point of failure: Improved data security and system availability.
